For this composition, I have chosen three phrases from Jesus' speech to his disciples in the Last Supper, collected in the Gospel of John. In the work there is a struggle between two scales, B aeolian mode, which represents uncertainty and fear but also closeness and intimacy, and D major, which symbolizes peace, serenity and sweetness. The writing combines the syllabic style –reserved for the biblical story, with clusters in the words ‘comfortless’, ‘troubled’ and ‘afraid’– with the melismatic style –which appears enhancing the words ‘peace’ and ‘you’–. Structured in two large sections, the second contains the same elements as the first, but expressed in a more emphatic way.
