Pat-a-pan
Traditional French Burgundian Carol, arr. Karen Marrolli
SATB, violin, guitar, and percussion
This French carol “Pat-a-pan” has been reimagined here in a Celtic style by composer Karen Marrolli. This arrangement was created specifically for the Taylor Festival Choir (Dr. Robert Taylor, conductor) for their commercial CD recording Sing We Now of Christmas (released November 2010 by MSR Classics). The recording features the talents of Liz Carroll (violin), Danny Mallon (bodhrán), and John Doyle (guitar) in addition to the Taylor Festival Choir.
The arrangement itself was influenced by the sounds of traditional Irish music and Celtic rock, as well as medieval vocal music. It was written to directly follow (on the CD) “The Little Drummer Boy,” the echoes of which can be heard in the men’s underlying percussive drones on the first verse. The composer is especially tickled by this passage in an Amazon review of Sing We Now of Christmas: “Karen Marrolli has given ‘Patapan’ an unexpected mystical feel, transporting the listener to an earlier age replete with high stone walls and the scent of a peat fire, while Liz Carroll and John Doyle add their artistry to this not to be missed arrangement.”
