OZ CANTATA Words from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1900) by Frank Baum The Witch of the North said, "I do not know where Kansas is, for I have never heard that country mentioned before. But tell me, is it a civilized country?" "Oh, yes." (The Scarecrow) Brains! Brains! Brains! Do you think if I go to the Emerald City with you Oz could give me some Brains! Brains! Brains! I do not want people to call me a fool. If my head stays stuffed with straw, how am I to know anything? ... I feel wise indeed. Brains! Brains! Brains! When I get used to my brain, I shall know everything.” (The Tin Woodman) My head is quite empty. But once, I had brains and a heart. Having tried them both, I shall take the heart. For brains do not make one happy, and happiness is the best thing in the world. ... Now I have a heart that any man might be proud of. For it is kindness that makes me strong and brave.” (The Lion) Courage! Courage! Courage! My life is simply unbearable without a bit of courage. As long as I know myself to be a coward I shall be unhappy. Courage! Courage! Courage!” ... “You have plenty of courage inside you. True courage is in facing danger when you're afraid. Of that kind of courage you have plenty.” (Dorothy) “There's no place like home. There is no place like home.” "All you do is knock the heels together three times and command the shoes to carry you whereever you wish to go." ... “Where in the world did you come from?” “From the Land of Oz. ... I'm so glad to be home again!” PROGRAM NOTE This mini-cantata was written for the Allegro Choirs of Kansas City for performance at the 2019 ACDA National Conference in Kansas City. The intent was to provide a piece which represented a celebration of Home for the choir as it was featured in performance at a national conference in its home city. The texts are taken from that Kansas literature classic, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, by Frank Baum. The piece represents a cantata shape, but in abbreviated length. In order, we hear a brief instrumental prelude, a short recitative, and then three set pieces -- an aria, duet and trio, which represent Dorothy’s three companions, The Scarecrow, The Tin Woodsman, and The Lion. Finally, there is a closing chorale (reminiscent of the opening prelude), as Dorothy realizes that indeed “There is no place like home.” In each of the set pieces, there is a ‘transformation chord’ (E-Tlat 11) as each character recognizes an essential personal truth. The violin, cello, piano accompaniment is meant to echo a Baroque trio texture.
