O Come, O Come Emmanuel O Come, O Come Emmanuel is an arrangement for choir and organ based on an improvisation performed several years ago by the Grand Rapids Symphony Youth Chorus. Basic elements of the vocal parts were taught ahead of time, but the piece itself was created spontaneously in concert with an improvised organ part. Two years later, I incorporated this improvisation into a large three-movement work for choir and small orchestra called Christe, lux mundi. The original, through-composed version called for brass and organ accompaniment, but the brass parts have been dropped from this version so that it may be more accessible for use in future choral concerts or church services. The full work Christe lux mundi is available at MusicSpoke.com. The other two movements are called Night in Arizona (based on a Sara Teasdale poem of the same title) and Christe, lux mundi (a free arrangement of the early American tune Jesus, the Light of the World combined with a new setting of a Latin text). In this arrangement there are several options. It can be performed by a single, SATB choir with organ. A children’s chorus or treble chorus may also be utilized. In this case, the treble chorus may double the soprano and/or alto parts at the conductor’s discretion. At B, the treble chorus may sing the soprano part while the sopranos and altos of the adult chorus divide on the alto line. If the audience or congregation is brought into the performance, have them sing melody at C.
Sean Ivory has been the vocal music instructor at Forest Hills Central High School since 1992. He is the director of the Grand Rapids Symphony Youth Chorus and its select treble ensemble, Mandala. Sean is also adjunct professor of music at Calvin College where he serves as the principal conductor of the Calvin Oratorio Society and conductor of the Campus Choir, a mixed choral ensemble with student membership from across all disciplines of the college.
