~ Performance Notes ~ In the opening motive in measures 6 - 10 and the recapitulation found in measures 57 - 62, the intended affect is best achieved if more weight (not accent) is placed on the first eighth note of each pair, and the 2nd eighth note, along with the tied quarter note, are very lightly floated. The piano accompaniment in measures 31 - 34 should only be used if it is deemed necessary for the ensemble. Ideally that portion should be performed a cappella. Also in this portion, the T1 part should be treated as an equal countermelody, as opposed to a subordinate homophonic harmony. Measures 39-46 present the text “This is my Father’s world” three times reflecting the holy trinity. These reiterations should increase in volume and intensity. As an option to help with the intensity growth, it is suggested that in measures 47-48, all sing the T1 part in unison, then return to assigned parts with the anacrusis to measure 49. If, however, that unison line proves to be inaccessible for younger baritones, the conductor should feel free to have the choir sing the 3 parts that are written. As the ensemble progresses through the piece, each suspension / resolution should be considered a vital cog, that all work in tandem, to create a slow-build toward the ultimate musical and spiritual resolution that occurs when "the earth and heaven be one."
~ The Arranger ~ J. Reese Norris (b. 1973) is Director of Choral Activities at Northwest Mississippi Community College, served 23 years at Hernando Middle School, and is co-founder and co-artistic director of The MidSouth Music Institute, Inc. Norris received degrees from Delta State University and Florida State University. Norris was the recipient of MMEA’s Music Educator of the Year, the Ernestine Ferrell Lifetime Achievement Award given by the Mississippi Chapter of ACDA, the Delta State University Music Alumnus of the Year and Educator of the Year Award. Norris has served in several leadership capacities for state-level NAfME and ACDA, and at the division level for ACDA. Choirs under Norris' direction have been selected to perform at Carnegie Hall, at the National Conference for Middle School Choirs, for the Alabama ACDA Summer Conference, three times for the Mississippi ACDA/MMEA State Conference, twice for the ACDA Southern Division Conference, at the OAKE National Conference and at the ACDA National Conference. Norris has been honored to serve as guest clinician across the U.S. As a composer, Norris has been commissioned by a variety of choirs, from children to collegiate and adult. Norris’ compositions, which have been performed in esteemed venues across the globe, can be found in catalogs of a variety of publishers.
