Lo, How a Rose/ There is a Flower, A cappella SATB, combines two Late Renaissance melodies with familiar texts using homophonic and canonic devices. Using the first six tones of the melodic content of Lo, How a Rose as a basis for canonic material and without apology for “pop” harmonies, the final verse combines the simplicity of the of the two songs text and directly links Mary (Jesse’s stem) with an ascending line above “the night” to join the angels heralding the child’s birth. This performance is by the Elizabethan Syngers from their album “Sing We Now of Christmas.” Purchase the score on MusicSpoke http://bit.ly/1HAshDH.
