Program Notes:

The first movement explores the quieter, day-to-day disquietude I feel regarding the climate crisis - emotions buried and dulled to a manageable, staticy depression and occasionally bursting out into deep melancholy and longing.  The second movement emulates an anxiety attack - trying desperately to keep it manageable and the distress blasting out jagged and unmoored regardless.  Years of pent up frustration at inaction in solving this problem let loose, musically speaking.

I am made to tremble and fear until the judgement shall come, and the coming wrath. That day, the day of wrath, calamity, and misery, powerful and exceedingly bitter day, when you come to judge the world by fire.

Grand them eternal rest, Lord, and let perpetual light shine on them.

This piece was ultimately the result of a number of climate anxiety-induced journaling sessions that morphed into a compositional exercise.  I feel deeply apprehensive about the climate crisis and often find that I best unpack and explore my emotions through writing music, so this piece is more or less the result of that.  While I can’t say I had “fun” writing this piece (certainly wouldn’t call reading the 2022 IPCC report a joyful experience!), I’m quite pleased with the tonal colors I got to play around with throughout it. “Libera Me (as ember singe the tide)” is a composition essentially split into two distinct movements.
