DuringMozart'stime,theMasonsespousedtheidealsoftheEnlightenment:brotherhood,liberty, tolerance,andseparationofchurchandstate.Mozart,alongwithmanyprominentmenofhis time,wasanactivefreemason.Masonsusedmusicinmanyoftheirceremonies,holdingthebelief thatmusic"inculcatesfeelingsofhumanity,wisdomandpatience,virtueandhonesty,loyaltyto friends,andfinallyanunderstandingoffreedom."Mozartwrotefourcantatasandnumerous songsforMasonicceremonies,andMasonicidealsareinterwovenintotheplotlineofhisfamous operaTheMagicFlute.
HecomposedtheFreemasonCantata(Freimaurerkantate)November15,1791,forthededication ofanewmasoniclodge.Mozartdiedlessthanamonthlater,andthecantataexistsashisfinal completedwork.LautverkündeunsreFreudeisboththeopeningandfinalmovementofthe cantata.

Theoriginalcantataisscoredformalechorusandsoloists,flute,twooboes,twohorns,andstrings, butthisperformanceeditionreducestheforcestotwoviolins,cello,andpiano.Sourcematerialwas takenfromthefascimileattheInternationaleStiftungMozarteum.ArticulationsareMozart's originals;addedslurshavebeenindicatedwithdashes.Dynamicsarealsooriginalandappliedto thevocalpartsonlyforconsistencywiththeinstruments.Clefshavebeenupdatedtomodern convention,andgracenoteshavebeenindicatedasstraighteighthnotes.
