Castelloza's Song

For the 2021 National Conference of the American Choral Directors Association, presented by Liza Calisesi Maidens and Katy Lushman for their research session, "(re)Consider the Canon." Performance by the Michigan State University Graduate Choral Ensemble. Generously commissioned by the Edward D. Anderson Choral Scholars Fund.

Historical and Performance Notes:

Castelloza’s Song was commissioned in conjunction with a research presentation, (re)Consider the Canon - bringing the past into the present, for the ACDA National Conference in 2021 In addition to uncovering approachable works by well-known composers from the Renaissance and Baroque eras, the session also highlighted voices that have often been excluded from choral history. In our research, we learned about Na Castelloza, a 13th-century trobairitz from Occitan. Based on her depictions in the Chansonnier Provençale Codex, she is thought to have been a woman of color. Only some of her poetry survives - none of her music survives Given the parameters of our session, we thought another way to “bring the past to the present,” would be to commission a work that featured one of Castelloza’s poems and used early music conventions. Like much of the repertoire from our session, Castelloza’s Song can be adapted to fit your ensemble needs.

It's the old ground trying it again. Solstice, seeding and birth it never gets enough. It wants the birth of a man to bring together sky and earth, like a stalk of corn. It's not death that makes the dead rise out of the ground, but something alive straining up, rooted in darkness, like a vine. That's what you heard. If you ' re in the right mind when it happens, it can come on you strong, and you might hear music passing on the wind, or see a light where there wasn't one before.

Historical and Performance Notes:

This performance edition of Bach’s Suscepit Israel from Magnificat, BWV 243 was created for the mirabai performance at Southwest ACDA in February 2020. The obbligato instrument plays the pre-existing “Tonus Peregrinus” as a cantus firmus, known as the wandering chant tone. The wandering tone in relation to the Israelites and overall text of the Magnificat helped to illuminate the theme of the mirabai performance, the concept of “Home.” The piece that followed in the mirabai program was Refugee, by Moira Smiley.

We collaborated with a saxophonist on multiple pieces for the SWACDA performance. Rather than adding an oboist to the roster, we invited the saxophonist to play the oboe part on soprano saxophone - an unconventional, yet pragmatic approach with a striking result. This performance was the final performance for many of the mirabai members and SWACDA attendees before the COVID-19 pandemic. It is a performance we hold close to our hearts. In June 2022, mirabai recorded this movement on our second album, “Home in Me.”

Light's last word on the day: beauty as beauty, beauty for beauty, and the beauty of our seeing what we so rarely see. Now listen: this is light alone, is what our day meant.

Darkness breathes quietly through the longest night. At dawn, I turn my heart from this grief-place, a loved name written on my life, seek the unknown, the old fallen away.

Dr. Timothy Jon Tharaldson is the Director of Choral Activities at Benedictine College, where he conducts five choral ensembles, teaches private voice, conducting, and liturgical music. He is also the Artistic Director of the St. Joseph Community Chorus. Prior to his current appointments, he taught at Rocky Mountain High School, Smoky Hill High School, and Ponderosa High School in Colorado. He has sung with Te Deum of Kansas City and was a member of the nationally acclaimed Kantorei of Denver for ten seasons.

Timothy has received commissions from the Minnesota Sinfonia, Wartburg College, St. Cloud State University, Longmont Chorale, Kantorei, and numerous other choral organizations. His composition Rest was featured by the 2015 Colorado All-State Mixed Choir and was also the contest piece performed by seven different choirs as part of the 122nd Queensland Eisteddfod in Brisbane, Australia.

His compositions are published through MusicSpoke, Hal Leonard, and Santa Barbara Music Publishing. Timothy is a member of the American Choral Director’s Association, American Composers Forum, Colorado Music Educators Association, and the Kansas Music Educators Association. He holds degrees from St. Cloud State University, the University of Northern Colorado, and the University of Kansas.
