About the Composer Born in Venice in 1706, Baldassare Galuppi first studied composition and harpsichord with Antonio Lotti, the chief organist and composer at the Basilica di San Marco. Widely popular throughout Europe, Galuppi composed music in nearly every genre: opera, traditional sacred music for the Basilica of San Marco, orchestral works, keyboard pieces, and oratorios and concerted works for the women and girls of the Ospedale di Mendicanti and the Ospedale degli Incurabili.
Laudate Pueri and the Ospedali Galuppi served as a teacher and composer at two of the four famous Ospedali in Venice, the Ospedale di Mendicanti and the Ospedale degli Incurabili. Started in the sixteenth century as hospitals and social welfare institutions, the Venetian Ospedali eventually developed into elite training establishments for the women and girls who lived there. Listeners would travel from all over Europe in the eighteenth century to Venice to hear the virtuosic music performed by the women in both the chorus and the orchestra. Composed by Galuppi in 1763 for the young women of the Ospedale degli Incurabili in Venice, the Vespers Psalm Laudate Pueri typifies the compositional style of the Galant period in which Baroque and Classical musical elements lay side-by-side.
Text and Translation Originally scored for Double SSAA Chorus, soloists, Double String Orchestra, and Continuo, “Quis sicut Dominus” is the fourth movement of the nine-movement Vespers Psalm Setting of Laudate Pueri. The excerpted portion of the text is given below. Quis sicut Dominus Deus noster, Qui in altis habitat, Et humilia respicit in caelo et in terra?
Who like the Lord our God, Who dwells on high, And looks down on the heavens and the earth?
Performance Notes In the original manuscript of the nine-movement score, this movement and the following movement, “V. Suscitans a terra,” are intended to be performed together, with an “attacca” indication at the end of “IV. Quis sicut Dominus.” Dynamics in parenthesis are editorial suggestions.
