Jean-Jules Gaignet (1839-1914) Lourdes Hymn Performance Time: c. 4:25 About the Work In this work I wanted to represent the Virgin Mary adorned as a queen who looks majestic in heaven, next to her Son Jesus. The first section is very pompous and grand, and is written with an orchestral texture. In the second section there is a change of character, when the people appear asking their Virgin for help. Here the timbric changes symbolize heaven and earth, just as the text describes. In the third and final section the main theme reappears, maybe with a more emphatic and solemn tone, and towards the end the people are recreated as they fervently go to the feet of the Virgin to pay her their last homage. Immaculate Mary was premiered by NEOVOCALIS, conducted by myself, on 17th July 2016 within the MATER DEI project. Rafael Sánchez Mombiedro About me I am an active choral composer, arranger, director, and a professor of Improvisation based in Valencia, Spain. Choral music has been my passion since my childhood. I started my musical training in my hometown as a chorister at the “Escolanía de la Virgen”. The training of those years still influences my compositions (which are mostly sacred) and arrangements for choir and piano. In 2003, I founded the all-professional chamber choir, NEOVOCALIS, which specializes in contemporary choral music. The ensemble has premiered most of my compositions under my direction.
