During a period of grief, I found myself unable to compose. The work I had been attempting, a setting of St. Francis of Assisi's Cantico delle Creature, required too much praise, too much bhakti, too much presence for me in my empty, hollow condition. I found myself thinking of my homeland in the west, and the otherworldly high granite of alpine wilderness, whose essence is so powerfully embodied in the writing of Gary Snyder. A poem from Snyder's collection Turtle Island, "A Prayer to the Great Family," opened a sunlit window onto the same universe of beauty extolled by St. Francis, through words of simple gratitude. The choral work that emerged became a kind of sutra for me, a discourse on the generous beauties that sustain us on this voyage around the sun.

Forrest Pierce (b.1972), composer and angler of little mountain streams, writes music steeped in religious mysticism and contemporary virtuosity, drawing upon both non-western and rock-era traditions to depict an authentic world of sacred unity and natural beauty. His works have been performed in sacred and concert settings, on noteworthy concert series and by diverse ensembles in North America and abroad. Pierce is the past resident composer of the Seattle New Music Ensemble and the founding artistic director of Portland's Friends of Rain Contemporary Ensemble. His catalog is led by over 60 works for voices, including operatic, choral, and solo vocal forces. He has been the winner of the 2013 Robert Avalon International Composition Competition, the Boston Choral Ensemble (2009) and Boston Chamber Singers (1999) choral competitions, was a winner in the 2013 Ortus International Choral Composition competition, and was awarded the Barlow Prize in Composition in 2012. He holds degrees from the University of Puget Sound, University of Minnesota and Indiana University, and counts Dominick Argento, Stephen Paulus, and Don Freund as his principal teachers. Pierce has enjoyed teaching positions at the University of Texas-Austin, at Lewis & Clark College, and at the University of Kansas, where he is Associate Professor of Composition. Current projects include a complete 150-movement Psalter for the Lutheran Church of Honolulu, a tango werewolf solo opera for Amsterdam soprano Laura Bohn and ICE cellist Kivie Cahn-Lipman, and a major work for the H2 saxophone quartet. Pierce also teaches on the unusually convivial faculty of the Cortona Sessions for New Music in Cortona, Tuscany.
