The text of this piece is taken from an ancient hymn Gloria in excelsis which includes the familiar angel song found in the Christmas nativity story.
These words have been set to music countless times, in many languages, by composers around the world for nearly 2000 years. I love the idea that this scene of a celestial birthday party is paired with the words Peace On Earth timeless and always relevant.

About the music
Like many people, I first learned some of the Gloria text as a child when singing the carol Angels We Have Heard on High The original carol comes from 18th century France, but the history of the words goes back MUCH further. In fact the first section of the song comes from the bible story about the nativity when the angels sang: Gloria in excelsis Deo, et in terra pax hominibus bonae voluntatis. (Glory to God in the highest, and on earth, peace to people of goodwill.)

The percussion instruments
pattern is
Shakers: This type of shaker works well with the instrument’s rhythm patterns. Egg shakers and maracas are not as well suited to the piece.
The tambourine, shakers and cajón make up the percussion section, scored so that two people can cover all three instruments. The tambourine and shakers create a steady pulse against which the cajón plays a variety of patterns.
The rhythmic pattern is
Tambourine: It can be a concert tambourine with a head, or a tambourine without a head. The jingles are the sound needed for this part. Rather than playing the part by tapping it against your leg, hold it flat and tap with two
Thefingers.rhythmic
The cajón part has several patterns and some short fills. Under the notes are letters that refer to left hand (L), right hand (R), or both hands (BH). The experienced percussionist is free to make their own choices in this regard and take some liberties with the patterns and fills while staying true to the spirit of the piece.

Cajón: The advantage to using a cajón is that it functions as a drum kit in a box. The notation in the score indicates two different sounds. The low note is like the kick on a bass drum and the upper note is the snare. Each cajón will produce different timbres and pitches. Experiment to find the right places to hit the box in order to get these varied sounds.
