Program Notes Ever since visiting Antarctica, penguins have been among my (and Marjorie's!) favorite animals. Due to strict regulations protecting their habitats and wellbeing, many colonies don't even recognize humans as predatory threats. If you sit in the snow, the curious little birds won't hesitate to come right up to your boots to check you out. "Fancy Dress" is my first attempt at a whimsical poem, trying to capture their perceived fun and playful nature. I just loved the idea of treating the penguin's natural black and white "tuxedo" coloring literally, and giving specific shout-outs to as many specific species as I could manage. (Apologies to Magellanic and Adelie penguins, who are no less adorable or charming for being left out.) ~SM

Performance Notes The choice of organ stops, mixtures, etc. in "Fancy Dress" is meant to be at the discretion of the organist, and according to the dynamics marked in the score. Passages marked ƒ should incorporate a reedier sound (specifically a cornet solo stop if available), and softer passages should use flutes. If needed for balance, it is permissible to divide the choir into three equal sections regardless of voice part (high-middle-low). The vocal lines from mm. 66-77 may be performed by soloists or by the entire section.

Fancy Dress

About the Composer Marjorie Halloran, originally from the San Francisco Bay Area, is a synesthetic composer, songwriter, and performer. Her choral music blends together smooth and memorable melodic lines, lush harmonies and textures, and the occasional abrupt change in time signature or key, just to keep things interesting. She holds her MFA in composition with an emphasis in songwriting from the Vermont College of Fine Arts, as well as a BA in music theory/composition from the University of California at Davis. She is the co-founder and original coordinator of the VCFA Choral Workshop, a program for graduate students interested in learning choral composition, and has studied composition under Michael Early, Jonathan Bailey Holland, Don DiNicola, Abbie Betinis, and Alice Parker. An accomplished choral singer in addition to composer, Marjorie has performed with many different ensembles in California, New Jersey, New York, and Texas, where she currently sings with and writes for Chorus Austin and Inversion Ensemble. Her compositional accolades include being the winner of the 2016 WomenSing "Youth Inspiring Youth" choral composition competition, a finalist for the I Kromatika composition competition in 2015, a semi-finalist for the American Prize in Composition (choral division) in 2018, and an American Prize finalist in 2022. Marjorie released her debut pop album, Ready For Anything, in 2015, featuring a variety of songs written during her studies at VCFA, and has released a variety of EPs on her Bandcamp site (marjoriehalloran.bandcamp.com). She currently resides in Austin, TX, while continuing her work with VCFA as the Program Assistant for the Music Composition program. Her favorite symphony is Robert Schumann’s 2nd, and her favorite instrument beyond voice is the viola. She loves the color yellow, biodegradable glitter, peanut butter, cocoa with mint, chords in first inversion, The Little Mermaid, and reading alto clef. She has a husband, an orange cat, and an obsession with rainbows, and her favorite Pokémon are Pikachu and Koffing. She has been to 50 states and 5 continents. About the Poet I wrote my first poetry during my teenage years in the late '90s, while struggling with the problems that all teens do - crushes, school, and fights with friends. I found that poetry helped me deal with emotions that felt too complex for regular words. After a high school English class that focused heavily on poetry analysis, I learned a lot about what makes a poem interesting, and what elements appeal to me personally. Today, I continue to use poetry as an outlet for relieving emotional and mental pressure, and sometimes, just for fun. I'm eternally grateful to have found a wife whose musical talent gives me the opportunity and encouragement to write for an audience, rather than just for myself.
