Program Notes
Inspired in part by Maurice Duruflé’s Quatre Motets sur des thèmes grégoriens, this piece aims to mensurate and harmonize the original “ego sum vitis vera” chant while remaining as faithful as possible to the beautiful, free flowing melody. Having been raised Catholic and having studied chant in school, I have long been fascinated with this earliest of spiritual music. Though no longer as Christian as I once was, I can’t help but find something deeply moving in chant. Composer Bio Mickey McGroarty is an emerging composer based in Akron, Ohio, where he lives with his fiancé and two cats. McGroarty earned his Master of Music degree in Choral Conducting from the University of Akron after obtaining his Bachelor of Arts degree in Music from the same institution. He has worked with composers, arrangers, and conductors including Jake Runestad, Deke Sharon, and Barnaby Smith of Voces8, and has been premiered in Ohio, California, and Germany.
