Program Notes “What birds were they?” begins a paragraph in Chapter V of James Joyce’s Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. I was blown away by the amazing writing of the passage, but the question stuck with me. I have spent decades enjoying birds but never knowing enough to identify them—only to ask the question. Then on my way to work, as I drove by the church, a flock of doves (or some such birds) resting on a wire startled and launched into the watercolor gray sky. A ray of morning sunlight escaped the cloud cover and suddenly lit them, and their grace and unity of motion threw me into poetry-writing mode. When Marjorie needed a sonnet, I was delighted to have one lying around. . . —Sylvia E. Halloran What birds were they? He stood on the steps of the library to look at them, leaning wearily on his ashplant. They flew round and round the jutting shoulder of a house in Molesworth Street. The air of the late March evening made clear their flight, their dark darting quivering bodies flying clearly against the sky as against a limp-hung cloth of smoky tenuous blue. He watched their flight; bird after bird: a dark flash, a swerve, a flutter of wings. He tried to count them before all their darting quivering bodies passed: six, ten, eleven: and wondered were they odd or even in number. Twelve, thirteen: for two came wheeling down from the upper sky. They were flying high and low but ever round and round in straight and curving lines and ever flying from left to right, circling about a temple of air. He listened to the cries: like the squeak of mice behind the wainscot: a shrill twofold note. But the notes were long and shrill and whirring, unlike the cry of vermin, falling a third or a fourth and trilled as the flying beaks clove the air. About the Composer Marjorie Halloran, originally from the San Francisco Bay Area, is a composer, singer, and songwriter. She is the co-founder of the choral workshop program for composition students at the Vermont College of Fine Arts in Montpelier, VT, where she received her MFA in composition with an emphasis in songwriting. Marjorie's compositions have been performed by Chorus Austin and Inversion Ensemble; Schola Cantorum of Los Altos, CA; Resounding Achord of San Jose, CA; WomenSing of Orinda, CA, and multiple ensembles at Vermont College of Fine Arts. She has arranged for Homestead High School, Los Altos United Methodist Church, and Willow Glen United Methodist Church, among others. She is the winner of the 2015-16 WomenSing "Youth Inspiring Youth" choral composition competition, and her piece "8 Ways to Look at a Window" was premiered in June 2016. She was also a finalist for the I Kromatika composition competition in 2015, and a semi-finalist for the American Prize in Composition (choral division) in 2018. An accomplished choral singer in addition to composer, Marjorie has performed with many different ensembles in the Bay Area, as well as in Princeton, New York City, and the University of California at Davis, where she received her BA in music theory/composition. She currently sings with Chorus Austin and Inversion Ensemble of Austin, TX. Marjorie released her debut pop album, Ready For Anything, in 2015, featuring a variety of songs written during her studies at VCFA. About the Poet  A long-time choir director, Sylvia E. Halloran now plays piano for Lutherans and organ for Methodists. She teaches creative writing and memoirs classes for Mountain View/Los Altos Adult Ed (Los Altos, CA) and is a respected editor. She has been married to Mike for nearly 40 years, and they have two grown daughters. She loves gardening, sewing, language, road trips, cats, and anything with nuts in it.

Then turning to an edge their dark sides show, A fluid shadow funnel into blue Mysterious heaven’s depth. Alas, not true That careless freedom guides their liquid flow; They live at whim of weather, food, and foe— A homeless, begging horde where e’er they go.
