About the Work In 2020, a few months after the outbreak of the pandemic, I wrote this work to dedicate it to all the victims of COVID-19. The text from the Gospel of St Matthew (11:28-30) could not be more appropriate: 'Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened...".
The work is structured in three sections. The first has a double exposition of Tenors and Sopranos, with emphasis on the words 'weary' and 'burdened'. The second section is lighter, and reaches its climax in 'for your souls'. In the reexposition the melody is written an octave higher, gaining in expressiveness and emotionality. In the coda, the first Altos contain the initial motif of the theme, symbolising the approach to Jesus, represented by the tonic pedal note in the Sopranos. Come to Me was premiered by NEOVOCALIS, conducted by myself, on 27 March 2022 whitin the HOPE project. Rafael Sánchez Mombiedro
About me I am an active choral composer, arranger, director, and a professor of Improvisation based in Valencia, Spain. Choral music has been my passion since my childhood. I started my musical training in my hometown as a chorister at the ‘Escolanía de la Virgen’. The training of those years still influences my compositions (which are mostly sacred) and arrangements for choir and piano. In 2003, I founded the all-professional chamber choir, NEOVOCALIS, which specializes in contemporary choral music. The ensemble has premiered most of my compositions under my direction.
