About the Text
"Be", for voice, crotales, vibraphone, bao gongs, and waterphone, is an exercise in meditation through song. The piece depicts a mantra that one may use to inwardly bring calm and peaceful feelings. The text, written by the composer, is purposefully very simple, to allow the listener to focus on all the sounds and various layers of harmony.
Deep breath. In. Out. Again. Relax. Be in the moment. Be silent. Be silence. Be, just be, and simply be. Focus on nothing. Calm your body, quiet your mind. Clear your head. Don't panic. Be, just be, and simply be.

Performance Notes "Be", for voice and percussion quartet, is a meditation; therefore, the tempo marking is merely suggestive, and the overall piece should not have a severely distinct rhythm throughout.. The performers should "go with the flow" and follow the singer, who should sing with a sense of free relaxation. The singer may be any gender, performing in the octave written or one below. Two players should stand at the vibraphone to work in tandem during the passages with both bowed and struck parts (i.e. mm. 27-38, etc). Each should have two bows as well as mallets. The motor should not be used. The performer should use the pedal generously at their own discretion, unless specifically marked "let ring". Sixteenth notes should be played very gently, to create a warm texture, with less emphasis on articulating specific notes. One player should play the crotales, a two octave set. The player should have a bow and mallets. One player should be in control of both the waterphone and the bao gongs. The waterphone should be played with a bow, very smoothly, and the sound unbroken. The waterphone should be played primarily on the same area of the instrument, and the pitch should be as close to a B natural as possible. The player should "swirl" the waterphone at their own discretion in order to create an ethereal sound. The passages marked "arco" in the vibraphone and crotales parts should be bowed, unless otherwise specified. "Ord" indicates a return to mallets, and to play as usual. The players should continue using bows or mallets until the next instruction.
The symbol for the use of the waterphone is an open diamond (|). The bao gongs use traditional notation. The gongs and waterphone should be placed conveniently near to each other so the player may expedite the transition between the two. The pitches required for the bao gongs are C#, E, F#, A#, and B.
