To compose this Ave verum Corpus, I have been inspired by the wonderful Byrd's setting. I wanted to combine in my composition the drama and sweetness that this hymn suggests. For this, I have used dissonances and musical rhetorical figures that enhance the meaning of the text. Harmonies are more incisive in words like 'Maria', 'passum', 'sanguine' and 'mortis'. I have left the most tender and emotional moment for the final verse, 'O dulcis', with a similar phrase to that made in Byrd, when the Sopranos guide the other three voices to lead to 'Mariae'. After a dramatic 'miserere mei', the final 'Amen' is very expressive and forceful.
