About the Work To compose this Ave verum Corpus, I have been inspired by the wonderful Byrd's setting. I wanted to combine in my composition the drama and sweetness that this hymn suggests. For this, I have used dissonances and musical rhetorical figures that enhance the meaning of the text. Harmonies are more incisive in words like 'Maria', 'passum', 'sanguine' and 'mortis'. I have left the most tender and emotional moment for the final verse, 'O dulcis', with a similar phrase to that made in Byrd, when the Sopranos guide the other three voices to lead to 'Mariae'. After a dramatic 'miserere mei', the final 'Amen' is very expressive and forceful. Ave verum Corpus was premiered by NEOVOCALIS, conducted by myself, on 21th July 2019 within the MERCY & LOVE project. Rafael Sánchez Mombiedro About me I am an active choral composer, arranger, director, and a professor of Improvisation based in Valencia, Spain. Choral music has been my passion since my childhood. I started my musical training in my hometown as a chorister at the “Escolanía de la Virgen”. The training of those years still influences my compositions (which are mostly sacred) and arrangements for choir and piano. In 2003, I founded the all-professional chamber choir, NEOVOCALIS, which specializes in contemporary choral music. The ensemble has premiered most of my compositions under my direction.
