The presence of an “X” signature denotes a free, unmetered interpretation of the score. Tempi should err on the side of too slow and the notated rhythms should not be taken literally. However, the notated rhythms do indicate which pitches should be drawn out longer when compared to the relative performance length of other individual pitches: i.e., a half note should not literally be taken as “two beats” but should definitely be longer than a sixteenth note when execution of both rhythms is compared.

The notation of an “X” signature should be considered different than the standard recit. notation. Recitative should be performed in the style of spoken language that contains pitches. This is not necessarily true under an “X” signature notation. Clarification about the distinction of the two is necessary as both are so reliant upon performer interpretation.

The final bar that contains the “quack” in the Anatidaephobia movement should be executed either as a verbal outburst by the accompanist that resembles a duck or should be performed with an artificial means such as a duck call. However, this should be performed by the accompanist so the singer can jump in paranoid fright to further perpetuate the absurdity of the situation. This section is meant to be humorous, so feel free to be creative in that moment with the execution of the “quack.”
