Translation: Even though the earth is bare of herbs and flowers, since here the sun has delayed and every graceful view, that made every lawn rich, is gone, this gentle and young rose is greener and has more and more leaves and flowers. Historical and Performance Notes: A composer and theorist, Lusitano was originally from Portugal, but spent his early adult life in Rome as a Catholic priest, only to later convert to Protestantism, marry, and then flee to Germany, where history lost track of him. 17th-century documents indicate that Lusitano had lineage from both Africa and Europe, and it is probable that he was only one or two generations removed from slavery. He was the first published Black composer, yet much of his music has remained in the vaults, most likely due to persistent patterns in classical music that have kept people of color, women, and other historically excluded people in the shadows of the choral canon. Please enjoy this performance edition of Lusitano’s three-voice madrigal, Allor che ignuda. It is repitched for sopranos, altos, and tenors, but you may alter the key or replace one or two voices with instruments to best fit your ensemble needs, as you’ll hear practiced in the recording by Segreis de Lisboa. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X_Rm-Sldw5o&feature=emb_logo
