I grew up making music with my best friend, Danica. We have both been really fortunate to have fulfilling musical careers - I followed the path of education while she pursued commercial music in contemporary worship. After 25 years of friendship, this is our first creative collaboration as adults.
A talented violinist and songwriter, Danica wrote this poem in January 2022. When she shared it with me, I immediately fell in love with it and began setting it for mixed choir and piano. The harmonic language is light, but cloudy and unstable. The texture wraps the listener in a dreamlike state as the speaker wonders whether they are awake or asleep.
The world of dreams is both fascinating and even addicting in its boundlessness. But how much of our lives do we miss when we only find fulfillment in dreams?
