STAFF SPOTLIGHT

Get to know our amazing team that help bring The Music Hall magic to life! What do you believe a cultural institution like The Music Hall should contribute to its community beyond what happens on its stages and screens? A great cultural institution should be part of the civic life of its community, not simply a building where you buy a ticket. It should create encounters—with artists, certainly, but also with ideas and with one another. It should occasionally make us uncomfortable, frequently make us curious, and remind us that living in a community requires actually encountering people who aren’t exactly like us. The arts are one of the few remaining places where hundreds of strangers voluntarily sit together in the dark and experience the same thing. That’s increasingly rare. And I think it’s worth protecting.

MARKUS GOTTSCHLICH

As The Music Hall approaches its 150th anniversary, how do you think about honoring its history while preparing it for the future?

I grew up in Vienna, where you learn fairly quickly that history can either be something you preserve in amber or something you live with. What first drew you to The Music Hall – and what made you feel this I prefer the latter. was the right place for your next chapter? The best way to honor a 150-year-old institution isn’t to make it a There are institutions you can understand from a website, and then museum of itself. It’s to make sure someone can walk through these there are places you really have to walk into. The Music Hall is one of doors 50 years from now and feel that it is still alive, still relevant and those places. still theirs. I was drawn to the history, certainly, but history alone isn’t enough. That means stewardship—of the building, certainly, but also of the What interested me was that this is a nearly 150-year-old institution that institution itself. Some things deserve to be protected fiercely. Other still matters deeply to people. People have stories about this place. They things probably deserve to be questioned. The interesting work is remember what they saw here, who they came with, where they sat. figuring out which is which. And there’s something intriguing about arriving at this particular We’re beginning that conversation now. moment. The Music Hall has accomplished a great deal, but it also feels like there are chapters still unwritten. That’s an interesting place to When you aren’t at The Music Hall, what are we likely to find you doing? begin. Now that you’ve had a chance to experience The Music Hall firsthand, These days, probably exploring New England with my wife and our young son. what has stood out to you most?

President & CEO

I’m also a pianist, so I always find my way back to the piano. Music has been the one constant throughout my life, whether I was performing, I expected people to care about The Music Hall. I perhaps didn’t expect teaching or running arts organizations. how personal that relationship would be. Staff, volunteers, artists, donors, audiences—everyone seems to have their own version of what And I like wandering. A city is best understood on foot, preferably without much of an agenda. Find the restaurant with six things on the this place means. menu, talk to somebody you weren’t planning to meet. That’s usually I’ve also been struck by how much happens behind the curtain, literally where the interesting stuff is. and figuratively. A cultural institution can look effortless from the audience. It never is. There are extraordinarily committed people making hundreds of small things work every day. The depth of feeling people have for it.

And I’m discovering that some of the most interesting possibilities for The Music Hall may be hiding in plain sight. I’ll leave it at that for now. As you begin your tenure, what are you most interested in learning from the people who make up The Music Hall community? I’m interested in the stories people tell when you stop asking them what The Music Hall does and ask what it means to them. I want to understand what people treasure and what they would never want us to lose. But I’m equally interested in who doesn’t yet feel that this is their Music Hall—and why. You learn a great deal by listening to the people who have been around an institution for decades. You can learn just as much from the person walking through the doors for the first time. My job right now is to listen carefully enough to hear both.
