Although their books don't have too much in common, the buzz about Jared Diamond and Tommy Orange has been incredible to follow and the two are not to be missed this month!
Jared Diamond returns to the Historic Theater with the final book in his monumental trilogy, Upheaval: Turning Points for Nations in Crisis. What I find most interesting about Jared Diamond and his work is that his career has spanned multiple fields of study, all expanding upon and informing the others. He seamlessly combines his studies in geography with evolutionary biology, along with personal experiences from his travels around the globe. Upheaval is a glimpse into this great mind, and I’d be remiss if I didn’t point out the affordable ticket price at $13.75 to hear the professor speak.
Just a week later, our literary eye turns toward an extraordinary work of fiction, There There by extraordinary breakout Native American author Tommy Orange. There’s a reason this book has been proclaimed “one of the best books of the year” by dozens of publications and counting. Tommy Orange brings to light a portrait of America we don’t see very often, one that needs to be seen. His voice grabs ahold of you until you look up from the book, unaware that you read the whole thing in one sitting. Don’t miss hearing from this PEN/Hemingway Award-winning author, as his book will surely be a classic.
Join us in the Historic Theater this month and keep your eye out for our summer reads coming in June!

Membership Manager Jess Bunker spoke with Kathryn and Mark Parenti, Patronlevel members at The Music Hall.
How did you first get introduced to The Music Hall? What drew you to become a Music Hall member?
Mark thinks it’s when we came to see Grace Potter and the Nocturnals; I think it may have been earlier, but time flies! We really liked the venue—even when the bathrooms were just bathrooms, not the ones they are now. We enjoyed The Music Hall and the show so we looked into more events to attend. We decided that since we were going to more shows, we should become members and take advantage of those benefits as well.
You've joined us for just about all of our Director's Club events! What do you love about Director's Club?
When we first started getting invitations to Director’s Club we thought, oh, one more thing to get out for. After attending our first Director’s Club we realized "Oh, this is one more thing to get out for!" It’s hard to meet people in this day and age, so coming to Director’s Clubs we’ve met quite a few new people who are great to talk to and experienced interesting venues that we hadn’t heard of or gotten to see yet. We’re really looking forward to visiting Alnoba for the first time in May and seeing the sculptures.

In the mid-19th century, Emily Dickinson is writing prolifically, baking gingerbread, and enjoying a passionate, lifelong romantic relationship with another woman, her friend and sister-in-law Susan. Yes, this is the iconic American poet, popularly thought to have been a recluse. Beloved comic Molly Shannon leads in this humorous yet bold reappraisal of Dickinson, informed by her private letters. He was deployed to Afghanistan where he served as Combat Camera—his unit's official videographer, tasked with shooting and editing footage for the Corps' recruiting purposes and historical initiatives. The Ar T s A re T he A nswer to vibrant and prosperous communities where we treasure our heritage, celebrate our diversity and nurture our ingenuity.

It’s our fifth year partnering with Gather for the Fill the Hall Food Drive on Saturday, June 22. The concept is simple, bring a bag of food to the Historic Theater anytime between 9am and 3pm, and put it on a seat. The impact is measurable. Last year, with your help, we collected nearly 12,000 pounds of food. Once that food is collected, sorted, and boxed up it is brought to Gather to support their Summer Meals 4 Kids. This program helps to fill the gap for 500 children who live in the Seacoast when subsidized school lunches aren’t available in the summer. Gather provides 10 meals a week for the 11 weeks of summer for all 500 kids. This year the need has grown by an additional 100 kids. They need those meals and we need your help to Fill the Hall.
Join us on Saturday, June 22 to Fill The Hall with food to help the people in our community who need it most. Can’t make it on the day? You can give a monetary gift and we’ll fill a seat for you. Organize your neighborhood, business, or book club. Find out more about the event and how to donate at TheMusicHall.org. Learn more about Gather at GatherNH.org.

A celebration of stunning views, sleek settings, and cozy charmers, The Music Hall’s 28th Annual Kitchen Tour showcases state-of-the-art kitchens in downtown Portsmouth homes.
Here are a few tips to help you make the most of your day on Saturday, May 11.
TICKETS Grab your tickets before the day of the tour to get the best price—and skip the line at our B2W Box Office.
TOUR MAP Once you have your ticket, you can start at any house on the tour. We’ll publish the map on The Music Hall website on May 1 so you can chart the most convenient route for your party in advance.
SHOES The tour requires walking from house to house, so wear comfortable footwear. Shoes are not allowed in the homes but we provide every attendee with a pair of booties for the day. Alternatively, wear your favorite socks and tour in your stocking feet!
PARKING Public parking lots located close to the houses include the Hanover Street Parking Garage, Foundry Place Parking Garage, and the Masonic Temple Lot.
MAKE IT A PARTY! This is an ideal event for a Mother’s Day celebration, a gathering of design aficionados, or a crew of curious cooks.
GET INSPIRED Event sponsors, builders and designers who created the kitchens will be on-site to answer your questions.
GUIDE BOOK Our Guide Book offers more this year, with professional photos of the kitchens as well as design details and home facts. Bring a pen; photographs are not allowed but the Guide Book has note-taking space for recording impressions and ideas.
LUNCH Touring kitchens may well whet your appetite and Portsmouth is a foodie town. Consider factoring a meal into your route and making reservations in advance.
We look forward to seeing you on Saturday, May 11—rain or shine!
Thank you to our Corporate Partners
