A few things have risen to the top of my list in terms of what to expect and look forward to these upcoming months. There is so much—including the return of the Punch Brothers on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17. Frontman Chris Thile is known for his versatility on the mandolin. His star first rose with the success of the beloved Grammy Award-winning band Nickel Creek. If you have not yet caught his wonderful radio broadcast, Live From Here on NHPR Saturdays from 6-8pm—do yourselves a favor and give it a listen. The show serves to highlight the works of many wonderful musicians and comedians but it also showcases the mastery Thile has developed as an instrumentalist, vocalist, and songwriter. Fans of stringed instruments should prepare for the return engagement of banjo phenoms Béla Fleck and Abigail Washburn. Their musical explorations have transported them to far reaches of the globe including China and Africa. And of course, you can expect to hear their more traditional roots music. Join us on April 11 as they retake the stage!
And for something totally new—Snarky Puppy makes their debut appearance at The Music Hall on Saturday, May 11. This three-time Grammy Award-winning collective has worked with some of the best in the industry—including D’Angelo, Snoop Dogg, and Erykah Badu. Their repertoire is a beautiful mix of jazz, rock, and funk. We look forward to seeing you at a show!

Please join us in welcoming to two new members of our Music Hall family: Jess Bunker and Lauren Rosen! Jess Bunker is our new Membership Manager and Lauren Rosen is the new Volunteer Coordinator & Assistant Front of House Manager.
Both Jess and Lauren have backgrounds in nonprofit management, making them great additions to The Music Hall family. Says Lauren, “I have worked in non-profit arts management for eight years, and formerly worked as a freelance theatre and film director. Mentoring and encouraging aspiring artists is my passion.” Jess added, “The common thread for me in all the work I've done is creating community; contributing to the elements and relationships that foster vibrant, livable, sustainable communities.”

In discussing how excited she is to join The Music Hall, Jess said, “I'm multi-fascinated. It's my own made-up term but it captures how excited I get learning new things, trying new things, making new discoveries...my enthusiasm can be pretty contagious!” Lauren—who previously was the Festival Coordinator for The Montclair Jazz Festival, an outdoor public event run by jazz bassist Christian McBride and jazz vocalist Melissa Walker—is most excited about the upcoming collaboration with the City of Portsmouth in the Worth Lot. “How exciting to be part of a first-time-ever festival production that is community-based and geared at forging new partnerships.” We imagine she’ll have some thoughts and advice in coordinating festivals to contribute as we move forward.
When asked why someone should become a member or volunteer of The Music Hall, their answers warmed our hearts. Lauren broke it down into two big reasons to volunteer with us: “1. There is an incredible warmth and collaborative spirit that pervades TMH. It's a fantastic opportunity to be part of an amazing community. 2. The programming! You get to experience pretty great performances, literary events, and film.” Remarking on the best reason to become a member, Jess said, “I think what stands out to me most is that when you join The Music Hall you're really joining a family. This is a theater for everyone and I think you feel that the moment you walk in the door. The Music Hall family is welcoming, it's inclusive, it's caring, which is what makes it feel like home.”
To read the full interviews about Jess and Lauren’s backgrounds, hobbies, pets, and more, check out our blog. Welcome home, Lauren and Jess!

This documentary sheds light on the current moment in American political life by following the arc of Roger Ailes: long-time Republican svengali and controversial founder of Fox News. By coaching an unrivaled stable of politicians over the course of fifty years, Ailes heavily influenced Republican politics, steering the conservative movement from Nixon to the Tea Party to Trump. Under his tutelage, anger and fear became the coin of the realm, both on the ballot and on national television.

When police officer Asger Holm (Jakob Cedergren) is demoted to desk work, he expects a sleepy beat as an emergency dispatcher. That all changes when he answers a panicked phone call from a kidnapped woman who then disconnects abruptly. Asger, confined to the police station, is forced to use others as his eyes and ears as the severity of the crime slowly becomes more clear. Director Gustav Möller expertly frames the increasingly messy proceedings against the clean Scandinavian sterility of the station, the single location of the film.

The world’s most unmistakable voice returns to the big screen when Josh Groban's Bridges Tour from Madison Square Garden comes to cinemas for a spectacular one-night concert event with special guest appearances.

The Ar T s A re T he A nswer to vibrant and prosperous communities where we treasure our heritage, celebrate our diversity and nurture our ingenuity.

We finished up the third year of our Give The Gift of Magic program in December, and with your generosity and with inspiration from Morgan and Tara Rutman, we were able to shatter our previous goals! This means together we helped so many more of our fellow community members enjoy the holiday magic of the Ogunquit Playhouse at The Music Hall's production of Elf The Musical. We are so grateful for the donations from our members, patrons, stakeholders, and corporate sponsors—especially Optima Bank & Trust—not to mention our program partners: Haven, Big Brothers Big Sisters of New Hampshire, Arts in Reach, Greater Seacoast Community Health, and Cross Roads House, all of whom helped us to get hundreds of free Elf tickets into the hands of those in need! One among many thank you cards we have received reads, “Thanks so very much for having us to your wonderful Elf The Musical! I can’t overstate what a special treat it was for us. Blessings to all involved for your thoughtful generosity.” Thank you for another outstanding year and for your help in giving to those in need.

For almost three years, we rented the Loft to CreativeMornings PKX and since last April our own Monte Bohanan has co-hosted the events alongside Raya Al-Hashmi of Raya On Assignment. Now the relationship is getting serious—The Music Hall has become a co-producer of the series, alongside Noelle Grattan (co-founder of the Portsmouth chapter) and the all-volunteer crew. These events now fall under our Innovation + Leadership series and remain awesome.
CreativeMornings PKX is a monthly breakfast lecture series where the guiding principle is that everyone is welcome and everyone is creative. Coffee and nibbles are provided before the event where folks can network and chat. There’s also a 30-second pitch section, where anyone in attendance has the opportunity to share new ideas, plug their new gig, or do a little dance. Then, the main event: the locally sourced speaker takes the stage for a presentation around that month’s global theme.
The Music Hall is excited to be a part of this community-driven series and further help its growth and impact. Could there be a better fit? Check out all of the past talks and see what’s up next at CreativeMornings.com/PKX
Save The Date! Thu, March 21 • 5:30–7pm • Historic Theater
Join us as we celebrate the support of all Music Hall Members, Sponsors, and Volunteers and preview what’s in store for the coming year at The Music Hall! The event is free but an RSVP is required.
We love having you as part of our Music Hall family, so we want you to have the inside scoop. Enjoy cocktails, hors-d'oeuvres, music, and conversation. Help us celebrate our volunteers and sponsors. Then stay to learn more about happenings at the theater as Music Hall leaders and curators announce upcoming shows; describe the collaboration with the City of Portsmouth and the Park Concept and Festival in the Worth Lot; and maybe even reveal the title of this year’s Ogunquit Playhouse production at The Music Hall.
The event is free but an RSVP is required. Stay tuned for details.

Built in 1878, The Music Hall is the sole remaining theater of the four grand venues that once graced downtown Portsmouth. Can you imagine our town without this community great room?
Over the last 30 years since we incorporated as a nonprofit, we’ve been on a journey with a dedicated and generous group of loyal patrons and volunteers. The early days were a reimagining, winning the hearts of our community with the great bones and remarkable acoustics of the theater. Restoration efforts brought the glory back and modernized the facility, enhancing the whole experience of one spectacular show after another. We’ve leveraged this with steadfast investments from a growing member and sponsorship base. It’s contributed to a healthy organization that has never been more relevant, with 600 events a year, leading to significant economic impact and greater contributions to our community.

With this model in place, we recognize the need to protect this success with a focus on stewardship. We are grateful for those of you who have thoughtfully planned for the theater when considering your estate and joined our 1878 Legacy Society. If you love this theater as we do, we’d love to hear from you. For more information, please contact Gail VanHoy Carolan, Director of Institutional Advancement at GCarolan@themusichall.org.
