Sam Morrow’s new album is rooted in Texas twang, southern stomp, and old-school funky-tonk with his characteristic electrified, energetic grooves.
At The Music Hall, we strive to bring the best acts and shows to the Seacoast. But as the world of entertainment and booking changes around us, we have to adapt our timeline for when we announce and put these events on sale. Now it seems that more often than not, we are announcing and putting new shows on sale outside of our usual schedule. As this is becoming the new “normal,” we still want to make sure you know what’s coming up and when.
You will still find new shows listed here on the On Sale page of our monthly magazine (see above). These shows will go on sale on the First Saturday of the month as usual. But be on the lookout for drop-ins—events that go on sale outside of our set schedule. These shows can get announced at any time. Whether it be a tour announcement or last-minute booking that makes these shows appear out of the blue, rest assured we’ll be letting you know, but enews is your best bet for staying on top of drop-in shows.
The curators (Thérèse LaGamma, Chris Curtis, Margaret Talcott, and myself) all work within the set schedule but remain flexible as more and more acts are asking us to break that schedule. As Thérèse says, “our flexibility and adaptability allows us to book bigger acts and attractions, and brings more diversity and talent to our stage.” Being nimble helps us keep up with trends and book the most exciting shows so we can continue to bring you the entertainment you are looking for.
Why do drop-in shows happen? On occasion, acts announce their whole tour at once, where if we’re not a part of it, you might not know until all of the good seats are taken. To give you the best chance of getting your tickets, we announce at the same time as these big tours. When we lock down a fantastic act last-minute, we might have missed the magazine’s deadline these shows get announced via our enews as soon as possible so you can catch them in time.
So how do you stay connected and informed on new events coming to The Music Hall? Signing up for our email newsletters (enews) is the best way to stay updated. And follow us on social media for “soft announces,” so you don’t miss out on these little surprises. And, as always, visit our B2W Box Office often!

With more than 500 recording and production credits to his name, Bob Lord, CEO of PARMA Recordings and bass player for experimental rock trio Dreadnaught, knows about music. And although we don’t always associate constancy with musicians, Bob is a pillar of commitment. He’s been a member of our Board of Trustees since 2013, and Dreadnaught has been the house band for Writers on a New England Stage since 2005. Bob is also a member of the 1878 Legacy Society, a group committed to ensuring The Music Hall’s continued vitality and sustainability by including us in their estate plans. We are lucky to have friends like Bob who are planning for gifts today that will provide significant benefits to The Music Hall in the future. Gail VanHoy Carolan, our Director of Institutional Advancement, has asked Bob to share what this means to him.

What inspired you to join the 1878 Legacy Society?
The Music Hall was here before me, I believe it will be here long after me, and I want to help ensure it remains a vital institution in our community for many years to come. As a musician, I’m accustomed to thinking beyond my own lifetime—what artist doesn’t hope for wild success in the unknown future when we’re gone?—and making a tangible contribution to the Hall as a part of my estate planning is a natural and logical extension of that perspective.
I have been a member of The Music Hall team since 2005, and I’ve also been an active participant in the Seacoast arts scene since arriving here in 1996. It was then that I formed Dreadnaught, which later became the Writers on a New England Stage house band, but my engagement with the wider community as a whole actually began when I became a part of this family. As a Board member, I have experienced firsthand the massive amount of effort by each and every person involved with the Hall, effort which is constantly and consistently necessary to sustain and advance the mission. Seeing so many different people from so many walks of life all come together in the service of this amazing venue is nothing short of inspirational.
To me, the 1878 Legacy is about our culture, our quality of life, the connective tissue of our community, and contributing to its ongoing flowering. I believe this program benefits everyone who lives here, everyone who visits here, everyone who has yet to come here. I have invested more than two decades of my life in this community, and the community has invested in me for just as long in return. With planned giving for The Music Hall, I can have an impact over time and space—it’s practically a superpower. Who wouldn’t want a superpower?
If you’d like to invest in the future of The Music Hall, we invite you to consider joining the 1878 Legacy Society. Gifts of any amount make a difference; please contact Gail VanHoy Carolan, Director of Institutional Advancement, at 603.766.2174 to learn more.

Chief Financial Officer of The Music Hall and double UNH alumna (‘96 and ‘01G), Tina Sawtelle chatted with incoming University of New Hampshire President James W. Dean Jr. about the relationship between our two organizations.
Why is supporting the arts important to the University of New Hampshire?
Arts play an important role in life in general and culture in particular. As we prepare our students to live full and rich lives, their exposure to and participation in the arts contribute in an important way to these goals. I have often thought that a life without enjoyment of the arts is missing something that is eternal and transcendent. The music of Ludwig van Beethoven, the choreography of Martha Graham, and the art of Claude Monet are among the things that make life worth living!

Why is it important to have a presence in the Seacoast community?
All universities play an important role in their communities, and UNH is no exception. While UNH is the state’s flagship university and our impact extends nationally and internationally, we have been rooted in the Seacoast for more than 100 years, and we aspire to be a good neighbor and a leader in our community. And of course, most of our students, faculty, and staff live in the region.
What are you most excited about in moving up to New Hampshire?
Lots of things! I am certainly looking forward to the beautiful New England autumns, and I have already enjoyed the delicious seafood, especially lobster. (I am confident I have had more lobster in my first month in New Hampshire than in the last 10 years combined!) I am also intrigued by New Hampshire’s unique role in the presidential primaries, and to perhaps meeting some of the candidates. I am enjoying the architecture, including the repurposed mill buildings found in so many communities. Finally, I have already benefited from the warm welcome that my wife Jan and I have received.
As the incoming UNH president, what value does the partnership between the University and The Music Hall bring to the community?
The Music Hall and UNH are two influential institutions in the Seacoast region and our longstanding relationship provides a great environment where students, alumni, and community members can thrive. While neither of us has sufficient resources to meet the community’s needs alone, there is also tremendous potential for synergy if we can work together effectively. I look forward to strengthening and deepening our partnership in the coming years.

As we look forward to the 2018-19 Met at The Music Hall series, we are thrilled to welcome back Series Sponsor RiverWoods Exeter. Conceived by a group of Seacoast residents and opened in 1994, RiverWoods Exeter is a nationally accredited non-profit Continuing Care Retirement Community spread across three campuses.

Cathleen Toomey, VP of Marketing for The RiverWoods Group, explains why the partnership works so well, noting, “Many RiverWoods residents frequent The Music Hall and many supporters of The Music Hall have come to call RiverWoods home. We both celebrate diversity, talent, and share a passion for what we do. Both organizations love the people we serve, and most important of all—we both build community.”
Join us—and a RiverWoods resident or two—in the lux Historic Theater for a Metropolitan Opera broadcast direct from New York’s Lincoln Center. Come early for the Opera Connection discussion to learn more about the screening and your community of fellow patrons!
To learn more about RiverWoods Exeter, visit RiverWoodsRC.org. As a special benefit, Music Hall members are invited to call weekdays for a complimentary lunch and tour of the beautiful 200-acre RiverWoods Exeter campus.
