This year also marks another major achievement: our recording Crimson Roses has been submitted for GRAMMY® consideration. Our season is framed by a special partnership with Teatro Real of Madrid— recently voted “the best opera house in the world.” This collaboration began through the friendship between Musica Viva NY board member David Rockefeller, Jr. and Teatro Real President Gregorio Marañón, and has blossomed into a series of exciting joint projects. Last December, we performed for Teatro Real’s patrons at Angel Orensanz Foundation, and today, we proudly present rising opera stars from Teatro Real’s Crescendo program. As Mr. Marañón shared: “The first opera house in Spain, with almost 200 years of history and a leading role among the most prestigious theaters on the international artistic scene, must not only be a benchmark for artistic excellence, but also carry the mission of bringing this art form to new audiences and of supporting the talent of young artists who will shape the future of opera. MEET THE ARTISTS

eatro Real of Madrid is considered the leading institution of the performing arts in Spain, the foremost national opera house and one of the most important Spanish cultural institutions.

Crescendo, Creamos Ópera is a program of the Friends of the Teatro Real Foundation, launched in 2021 with the aim of promoting, stimulating, supporting, and accompanying the artistic and professional development of promising future operatic artists. More than 99 young artists of 20 nationalities have participated in the five editions of this training program, which offers first-class artistic training from leading professionals and artists associated with the Teatro Real, as well as support at the beginning of their careers through job opportunities. Gonzalo Villarruel studied piano under the tutelage of Mauricio Vallina, his main musical guide since 2015. At the same time, he studied Orchestral Conducting at the RCSMM with maestros Juan Luis Martínez and Mariano Alises. In 2016, he received the Premium Scholarship for excellence courses from the Martha Argerich International Academy, and in 2021, he received the Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli Foundation Scholarship, awarded by the Argentine pianist. In February 2024 he was selected as a repeat pianist for the IV Crescendo Edition of the Friends of the Teatro Real Foundation, participating in lyric recitals at the Teatro Real and the Real Teatro de Retiro. Together with the Serbian soprano Dragana Paunovic, he won the 2nd prize at the 3rd AMAO International Singing Competition (2024) and the 1st prize and special prize at the 8th Martín y Soler International Singing Competition (2025). He is a regular contributor and co-repetiteur with several choirs, such as the Orfeón Complutense, Coro Polifónico de Madrid, Coro Divertente y Coro Filarmonía, and assistant conductor of the Orfeón Carlos III. He has participated in the Eutherpe Foundation Orchestra, Piano and Conducting Course and received instruction from maestros such as Bruno Aprea, Joaquín Soriano, Jura Margulis, and Patricia Barton. Soprano Lucía Iglesias (May 2000), discovered her vocation for singing at the age of eight when she participated in Werther by Massenet at the A Coruña Mozart Festival, conducted by Víctor Pablo Pérez and Graham Vick. She studied piano and singing at the conservatory in her city, earning the graduation award in singing. She made her professional debut in 2019 with Cinderella Rossini’s opera at Òpera a Catalunya. Since then, she has performed roles such as Musetta (Bohemia), Age (The Elixir of Love), —5—

MEET THE ARTISTS Susanna (The Marriage of Figaro) and Clorinda (Cinderella) in theaters in Spain and Italy. Critics praise her pliable, fresh voice and her theatrical performance as exquisite and lively. Winner of competitions such as the Clara Schumann Competition, Spazio Musica, Compostela Lírica, Germans Pla and Mirna Lacambra, she has trained with sopranos such as Lisette Oropesa, Mariella Devia, Nadine Sierra and Deborah Polaski. She has a degree in Music, a Master’s degree in Theatre from the International University of La Rioja and participated in the V edition of YAP Crescendo at the Teatro Real. She is currently training with Daniel Muñoz and Manuel Burgueras. She will soon play Adina in Orvieto and make her debut as Nannetta in Falstaff by Verdi. Soprano Carmen Larios began her piano studies at the age of 8 at the Cuevas del Almanzora Conservatory in Almería. She continued her singing studies at the Narciso Yepes Professional Music Conservatory in Lorca, Murcia, at the age of 12. She continued with both in 2019 at the Castilla y León Conservatory of Music in Salamanca, where she completed her advanced piano studies in 2023 and singing in 2024. Among her participations in international competitions, the XIX New Voices Competition, Seville (January 2024) stands out, where she won First Prize at the Maestranza Theater, in addition to receiving two other awards: the Special Prize Rodolfo Celletti Academy of Bel Canto and the Special Prize from the Seville Royal Symphony Orchestra. She was awarded a scholarship to join the academy in 2024 and a concert with the Seville Royal Symphony Orchestra, held in September 2024 at the Royal Alcázar of Seville, respectively. She also won Third Prize at the Lousada International Competition, Portugal (June 2024), as well as a Special Prize to perform a recital in the 2025/26 season at the Friends of the Opera Association of A Coruña. She has participated in the IV Crescendo Edition at the Teatro Real in Madrid. There she was part of the cast of the opera production The Liberation of Ruggiero from the Island of Alcina by Francesca Caccini at the Teatros del Canal in Madrid (June 2024). She has also given concerts in the main hall of the Teatro Real for the presentation of the New Season, among other events. Also in February of this year, she was the soprano soloist in Mozart’s Requiem at the National Auditorium in Madrid. Carmen’s future projects include: the debut of the role of Health in The Short Life de Falla at the Humboldt University of Berlin. She has also been awarded a scholarship by the Wagnerian Association from Madrid to attend the Bayreuth Festival next August. It will be part of the Opera Studio from the Stuttgart State Opera from September 2025. She has been part of the cast of Parsifal of Wagner as one of the flower girls. —6—

MEET THE ARTISTS She currently resides in Berlin, where she is pursuing a master’s degree in opera at the prestigious Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler. Tenor Eduardo Pomares completed his Bachelor’s and Master’s studies in bassoon at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Madrid, where he discovered his passion for lyrical singing and entered the Higher School of Singing in Madrid. As a soloist, he has performed works such as Mozart’s Requiem, Dvořák’s Stabat Mater, and Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde. He has appeared in opera and zarzuela galas at venues such as the National Auditorium, the Monumental Theatre, and the Royal Theatre. His notable roles include Il Duca (Rigoletto), Don José (Carmen), Rodolfo (La Bohème), José María (La chulapona), Javier (Luisa Fernanda), and Gustavo (Los gavilanes). He won first prize at the 8th Albox Lied Competition (2023), first prize and zarzuela prize at the Alcalá de Henares Competition (2024), and third prize at the Logroño Competition. He also won an award at the Valleseco Zarzuela Competition (2024). He participated in the program IV Crescendo from the Teatro Real, performing the chamber opera Tenorio by Tomás Marco. He currently continues his vocal training with Elena Valdelomar and Ricardo Francia. Born in Madrid in 1997, baritone Enrique Torres Domínguez has developed his career in the lyrical field, covering opera, zarzuela, and concert repertoires. He has performed on important national and international stages, collaborating with prominent musical institutions and renowned conductors. He participated in the Teatro Real’s 2024/2025 Season presentation, accompanied by the Teatro Real’s Symphony Orchestra, as well as in a concert of arias and duets on the same stage. Among his recent stage engagements are the roles of Le Chat and L’Horloge Comtoise in The Child and the Spells by Maurice Ravel, at the Teatro Real de Retiro; the debut of the role of Vidal in the zarzuela Luisa Fernanda; Marcello’s role in Bohemia and that of the Marquis d’Obigny in La Traviata, the latter performed in Lanzarote with the Las Palmas Symphony Orchestra. He has given recitals in prestigious venues such as the Belgais Center for the Arts, alongside pianist Maria João Pires, as well as in cultural and diplomatic institutions such as the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza, the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando, and the NATO base in Latvia. MEET THE ARTISTS technique and style with figures such as Ramón Vargas, Dolora Zajick, Roberto Scandiuzzi, Elisa Belmonte, Ángel Ódena, Manuel Mas, Sabina Puértolas, and Leigh Melrose. He has a solid academic background: he holds a degree in performance (specializing in trumpet) from the Katarina Gurska Conservatory of Music (CSKG) and is currently in his final year of advanced singing studies at the Escuela Superior de Canto in Madrid. He also furthered his training at the Conservatory of Music of the Principality of Asturias, where he specialized in composition.

PROGRAM NOTES

his concert presents a journey through some of the most representative works of the operatic repertoire. It begins with the expressive power of Manuel de Falla and continues with unforgettable arias by Puccini, Bellini, and Tchaikovsky, imbued with emotion and sensitivity. The program also includes pieces by Mozart and Verdi, great masters of opera, alongside notable French works by Bizet and Gounod. It is completed with the Spanish tradition through zarzuela excerpts by Moreno Torroba and Sorozábal, bringing closeness and establishing a close connection to cultural roots. This repertoire was conceived for Musica Viva NY to showcase the richness and diversity of opera and zarzuela. It offers the audience a musical journey that unites different cultures, styles, and emotions, performed by young artists who represent the future of the genre.

Dr. Alejandro Hernandez-Valdez is a celebrated conductor and pianist known for his expressive artistry and innovative programming. He serves as Artistic Director of Musica Viva NY, Director of Music at the Unitarian Church of All Souls in Manhattan, Artistic Director of the Victoria Bach Festival in Texas, and cofounder and Artistic Director of the New Orchestra of Washington (NOW).
