MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR AND THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

elcome to the last concert of Musica Viva NY’s 2021-2022 Season!

We programmed the music you will hear today long before we knew that Putin would start a tragic war in Ukraine in late February that would be raging fiercely as we write this. What a horrific addition to the terrible challenge the world has been experiencing with the pandemic. Right after the invasion we started to think about whether we could present an all Rachmaninoff program at this time, since Rachmaninoff was a Russian composer to his core, and Russia is the ruthless aggressor in this war with Ukraine. After reflection and discussion we came to the conclusion that Rachmaninoff’s music has nothing to do with the politics and decision making of Russia’s current leader. Although Rachmaninoff loved Russia deeply, he left in December 1917, never to return, settling in the United States and becoming a US citizen in 1943. We believe that Rachmaninoff’s music represents the opposite of Putin’s current aggression. It is music that fills the heart and soul with peace, solace and healing and evokes humanity’s best qualities. We did decide that we would like to include a piece for Ukraine, and will start the concert with Prayer for Ukraine by leading Ukrainian composer Valetin Silvestrov. With this program, we would like to offer you a time to experience the healing power of music, and to conclude our season with this magnificent, rich music that celebrates what is best in all of us. ABOUT THE PROGRAM RUSSIA, THEN AND NOW

t is hard for us in the West to imagine what the Ukraine-born composer Valentin Silvestrov is enduring, living, as he does and always has, in Kiev, a city quite literally—and the cliche is the only effective way to frame it— under siege. But of course it has always been impossible for we in the West to understand, for we (with one glaring exception of a day) have seldom had the barrier breached, the gate even vaguely stormed, because we have been the conqueror rather than the conquered. And yet here Musica Viva NY opts to open with this still-vital composer’s lilting, dewy, A Prayer for Ukraine, asking only for protection—protection needed then, far more so now. This concert, focusing as it does on the Russian composer Sergei Vasilyevich Rachmaninoff, comes at a freighted moment in the world—a moment that will likely have expanded in seriousness between the writing and the reading of these notes—with debate around the banning of the work of a land currently undermining the democratic values of the world and murdering thousands at the hands of a deliberate assassin for only the most historically fanciful of reasons (at best). So whither the music of the great Russians, that music so eternal that it no longer belongs to country or person but to the ages, is the de facto question at hand. And Rachmaninoff, born as he was into an aristocratic and deeply nationalistic family, is indisputably and atavistically Russian to the core. And yet within the composer, as these two radically different works demonstrate, was a conflict which led to a confusing and sometimes addled legacy, a legacy, at least at this writing, even more gummed up by recent world events. As the historian and inveterate Russophile Richard Taruskin said of the composer: “For me to say ‘Rachmaninoff was the last of the great composers’ would have been absurd; and it would have been equally absurd for me to say that he was not.” The entirety of the personally devout composer’s a cappella All-Night Vigil—a piece often (mis)labeled Vespers, which is only partially true, because the texts encompass also Matins as well as other aspects—in truth only takes seventy-five minutes to perform soup to nuts (lest you panic), but when the movements are part of the actual rite, it lasts Compline, until dawn, and runs the high-charged emotional gamut of religious ritual. One quiddity about the piece: it is devoid of tempo markings, making each performance inherently (and excitingly) deeply unique. And while it took half a century to actually record the work, the near-surfeit of available performances speaks to the power and changeability of the piece. This setting of these sacred texts (inspired as they were by others who assayed the same bits of liturgy, most powerfully Tchaikovsky’s lesser-known—but extremely potent—setting) make use of different types of chant, and the work stands as a different mode of musical creation for this otherwise often overt and very public composer, an introverted and personal cycle of pieces—the fifth movement of which (“Lord, Now Lettest Thou”) the composer wished to be played at his own funeral. —4—

ABOUT THE PROGRAM The piece was premiered in 1915, in a Russia exhausted by revolution and forthrightly addled and rent by a then-current war. He wrote it in an astonishing two weeks, and dedicated it, in memoriam, to Stepan Smolensky, a Muscovite choral director—he ran the Moscow Synodal Choir—who had introduced the composer to the liturgical texts and melodic fragments. The work is considered by many to be the last great musical work of the Russian Orthodox Church—a claim perhaps Stravinsky, were we able we ask him, might dispute. In an interview in 1939, Rachmaninoff said “I cannot cast out the old way of writing and I cannot acquire the new.” The world was changing, music was changing— Bartok, Stravinsky, Satie; the Second Viennese School; not to mention American Jazz were all reigning in the musical ether—and the composer was having trouble changing alongside it. He wrote precious little at the end of his life, struggling perhaps with his brutal concert schedule, but perhaps stung by the musical scene—his more recent pieces (including the Fourth Piano Concerto and the Third Symphony) had not been critical or commercial successes—he had stepped partially away. And yet, since the beginning of the First World War, just before he white-heated All-Night Vigil, the composer had been desperate to write a ballet. Therefore, his final composition, written just three years before his death, was the spry, three-movement Symphonic Dances. It is the work of a solid, accomplished composer unafraid of the old wine in the old bottles, and was no doubt considered recherché in those fractious times. It was written at a comfortable mansion on Long Island, but it is as deeply Russian a work as he ever wrote, even—maybe especially—in the clarity of the composer’s twopiano version performed today. It was premiered by Eugene Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra in 1941. In the piece he looks, as he does in the All-Night Vigil, to the chants of his faith and country while simultaneously hinting at a backward glance over his own life, a cheeky Catalogue raisonné. He quotes both one of his own symphonies in the first movement and in the third movement he hints at his favorite of all of his compositions, that piece steeped in Kiev Chant, “Blessed Art Thou, O Lord.” But the three-movement piece, titled as it is, is meant to be danced—in fact, before his death in 1942, the masterful Russian choreographer Michel Fokine (of both Scheherazade and Firebird fame) intended to stage it. Many have since. “Given what we know of Rachmaninoff’s state of mind in 1940,” writes Michael Steinberg, “it is likely that he thought of this as his last composition. We see him then taking leave of his craft with a hymn of thanks and praise.” And today, we watch in horror as the Russian State, through its apparatchicks, tries to rewrite this glorious history of which Rachmaninoff (along with any number of other artists, from Nabokov to Pussy Riot) stands as a proud, devoted part. But the history of art shows much, and even if we are angry we can still learn and come to understand. Hearing this important composer in both his public and private guises gives us the sense of his own internal struggle, his own duality (a Russian characteristic immortalized by Dostoyevsky), his own sense of public and private self. —Daniel Felsenfeld —5—

ounded in 1977, Musica Viva NY is a chamber choir of thirty professionals and highly skilled volunteers, based in Manhattan’s historic All Souls Church. Its mission is to bring world-class music to a widening community through its annual concert series, community engagement programs, and an ambitious artistic vision. Under the baton of Alejandro Hernandez-Valdez since 2015, Musica Viva NY has been praised by The New York Times as an “excellent chorus.” Musica Viva NY has toured in France (2004), Germany (2006) and Italy (2012).

steemed conductor and pianist Dr. Alejandro Hernandez-Valdez was named Artistic Director of Musica Viva NY and Director of Music of the historic Unitarian Church of All Souls in Manhattan in 2015. He is also Co-Founder of the New Orchestra of Washington and Artistic Director of the Victoria Bach Festival. He has earned accolades from The Washington Post as a conductor “with the incisive clarity of someone born to the idiom,” as well as praise from The New York Times for leading “a stirring performance” of Brahms’ Ein deutsches Requiem. At a concert commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the WWI Armistice (featuring the world premiere of Joseph Turrin’s cantata And Crimson Roses Once Again Be Fair) Oberon’s Grove wrote: “Maestro Alejandro Hernandez-Valdez drew rich, warm sounds from the musicians” in “a beautiful and deeply moving program.” He is featured in El mundo en las manos/ Creadores mexicanos en el extranjero (The World in Their Hands/Creative Mexicans Abroad), a book by the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs honoring Mexican nationals who are leading figures in diverse artistic fields. He is the recipient of a 2016 Shenandoah Conservatory Alumni of Excellence Award for his exemplary contribution to his profession, national level of prominence, and exceptional integrity. He resides in New York City and Washington, D.C.

adalyn Luna is a first generation, MexicanAmerican mezzo-soprano from Chicago, Illinois. Heralded as having a “distinctive, caramel-colored” voice by Opera News, Ms. Luna has been recognized for her invested character portrayals especially in contemporary opera and early music. Past role highlights include Julia Bertram in Jonathan Dove’s Mansfield Park, Sesto (Giulio Cesare), Emmeline (Emmeline), The Governess (The Turn of the Screw), and Soprano 2 (Hydrogen Jukebox). In Ms. Luna’s premiere year with the Unitarian Congregation of All Souls and Musica Viva NY, she has had the pleasure of being featured in Vivaldi’s Gloria and Bach’s Magnificat as an alto soloist. Madalyn was recently a member of Boston University’s Opera Institute and received her Master’s in Voice Performance from Manhattan School of Music under the tutelage of Dr. Cynthia Hoffmann. She is currently a student of Mark Schnaible and resides in New York City. —6—

hawn Bartels, Tenor, is a native of Gillette, Wyoming. Roles include Count Almaviva (Il Barbiere di Siviglia), Lindoro (L’Italiana in Algieri), Il Podestà (La finta giardiniera), Nanki-Poo (The Mikado), The Vain Man/ The Snake (The Little Prince), Alfred (Die Fledermaus), the Roasting Swan (Carmina Burana) and St. Nicolas in Britten’s Saint Nicolas. He appeared as the Ballad Singer (Of Mice and Men) with Glimmerglass Opera. Mr. Bartels sang Uriel (The Creation) under the baton of Robert Shaw, appeared at Carnegie Hall in both Mozart’s Vesperae de Dominica and Coronation Mass and appeared in Jonathan Miller’s stagings of Bach’s St. Matthew Passion and Monteverdi’s L’Incoronazione di Poppea at The Brooklyn Academy of Music. He performed The Prologue/Quint (The Turn of the Screw) with Broomhill Opera (London) and Skylight Opera, and sang Don Ottavio (Don Giovanni) with Ensemble D’Opera European (Marseille, France). Most recently, Shawn has appeared with the Victoria Bach Festival, the Society of Musical Arts and the State Repertory Opera of New Jersey. He has been a soloist with Musica Viva NY since 1996. He received his Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from the University of Northern Colorado and his Master in Music in Vocal Performance from Florida State University. Shawn is a member of the New York guitar-pop band Portraiture, who released their EP, “Cruel Yellow” in 2017.

aul D’Arcy is in demand nationally as a soloist and chamber musician. Recent oratorio solo appearances include the Austin Symphony, Tucson Symphony, American Classical Orchestra, True Concord, and Ensemble viii. He has performed on numerous recordings for Harmonia Mundi, Reference Recordings, Naxos, and PBS, including the 2015 Grammy winning album, The Sacred Spirit of Russia with Conspirare. His most recent recording, Once Upon a Time (Skylark Ensemble), has been nominated for Best Choral Performance in the upcoming Grammys. Performances include the NY Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestra of St. Luke’s, American Classical Orchestra, Musica Sacra, St. John the Divine, Trinity Wall Street, Los Angeles Philharmonic, NYC Ballet, National Sawdust, Worldless Music at BAM, Essential Voices, San Diego Bach Collegium, Ensemble Origo, Seraphic Fire, Santa Fe Desert Chorale, Cape Cod Symphony, and Spire.

athan Siler is a performer and composer who lives and works in New York City. In addition to singing as a soloist for Musica Viva NY, Composer’s Choir (New Haven, CT), Five Lines, and the Unitarian Congregation of All Souls, he frequently performs as a chorister at Carnegie Hall with the Bard Festival Chorale and at Lincoln Center with the Concert Chorale of New York. When not singing, Nathan keeps a busy schedule as a music producer, recording engineer, and videographer. He is the chief architect of the NYC post-punk-prog band Portraiture.

argaret Kampmeier enjoys a varied career as soloist, collaborative pianist, and educator. Equally fluent in classical and contemporary repertoire, she has concertized and recorded extensively. She has performed with the St. Petersburg Chamber Philharmonic, New York Philharmonic Ensembles, Kronos Quartet, and Mirror Visions Ensemble. As orchestral keyboardist, she performs regularly with the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, and has subbed in the New York Philharmonic, American Composers Orchestra, and Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra. She co-founded New Millennium Ensemble, a new music sextet that won the 1995 Naumburg chamber award. She has performed and recorded hundreds of new works, and has worked with composers of all ages and stages. Ms. Kampmeier can be heard on the Albany, Centaur, CRI, Koch, Nonesuch, and Bridge labels. Ms. Kampmeier teaches piano and chamber music at Princeton University where she is also Coordinator of Piano Studies. In addition, she has been Chair of Manhattan School of Music’s Contemporary Performance Program since 2014. As director of this intensive two-year Master’s course of study, she has become known for her collaborative leadership style, inspired teaching, clarity of vision, and inclusive programming. Ms. Kampmeier earned degrees from the Eastman School of Music and SUNY Stony Brook, and is deeply grateful for the shared wisdom of her mentors, Barry Snyder, Jan Degaetani, Julius Levine, and Gilbert Kalish.
