An Evening with Dr. William Carr

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 12, 2023 7:00 P.M. DUFFY THEATRE

Dr. Carr is the first scholar-in-residence at Malvern Preparatory School and focused on teaching creativity for this years program. His goal was to teach the importance of creativity through the learning and problem-solving process. Dr. Carr showcased his own talents as a world renowned Steinway artist and pianist in the Fall at “An Evening with Dr. William Carr and again in the Spring with the Immaculata University Symphony

Our Very Own Daniel Benonis is a Doctor!

1. What made you go into music therapy in the first place?

“I knew that music was helpful for me and my journey and I knew I didn't want to be a performer or educator but I was really interested in psychology. I wanted to help people. When I realized that I had a fear of heights and could not be a Philadelphia firefighter, I was talking with my advisor and she told me about music therapy and the next semester I enrolled at IU.”

2. What made you choose to pursue a Doctorate degree in music therapy?

“Who doesn't need 3 degrees in music therapy? In all seriousness, Music therapy, was not my first choice for a doctorate degree. I was originally neuropsychology, neuroscience, counseling psychology, audiology, and general creative arts therapies. I think music therapy is where my home is. When I completed my masters degree I knew there was research that I wanted to conduct.”

3. What made you choose Temple University for your degree?

“All my predecessors went to temple and all research up to this point was coming from temple so I felt the most right. I was thinking of Ken Bruscia and others that made that program what it was and I wanted to experience what my predecessors experienced. I also really wanted to learn about research from world renowned researchers.”

4. Can you discuss your dissertation and what made you choose this research topic?

“My study was on the feasibility of directed imaginary music psycho therapy on self awareness for individuals and change in substance use individuals at an inpatient drug and alcohol facility. I was interested in this population because I am from Philly, I knew the impact that alcohol had on individuals. Given my background I wanted to further my research to help others.”

Dr. Daniel Benonis PhD., MT-BC, LPC

5. Why was it important for your professional development to pursue a doctorate degree?

“My employment at IU was contingent upon receiving a doctorate degre but for me it was more of a personal decision. It also helped me connect research to personal work that I would not have been able to use for a post master's degree.”

6. Do you plan to conduct any further research in music therapy? If so, what

“I have been in talks with our exercise department at IU to conducting research with adults with developmental disabilities further between the clinic and GetFit program. Currently, I am focusing on the use of creative arts therapies, drug abuse, eating disorders, as an internal interest at my personal work experience.”

7. What is your current place of employment?

“Currently I work at High Focus Centers Pyramid Healthcare Incorporate as an Associate Director of Creative Arts Therapies, a Clinical Supervisor Music Therapist, and a Counselor. At Immaculata University I am Assistant Professor, Director of Clinical Training and a Clinic Manager at the IU Music Therapy & Wellness Center.”

8. How does it feel to receive your doctorate degree?

“It didn't feel real at first and I am still getting used to the time for other projects.”
