Father’s Day TO ALL YOU DADS

ather’s Day is such a special day set aside to celebrate the value and important role our father plays/has played in our lives. And as we have turned the page to June and Father’s Day has arrived, June 20th to be exact, I urge you not to forget to show love to dear ol’ dad. A father is an equally important piece to the family dynamic, and as good of a mom as I try to be, I know my kids wouldn’t be where they are today without Scott. I know I wouldn’t be where I am without him as my husband. And putting Scott aside for a second, I also know I wouldn’t be where I am without my daddy. Our kids are lucky to have a mom and dad; that’s not the case with many families out there. I am certainly not trying to create a downer moment by saying that, but I am saying that we should all make sure to let dad know how much he means. Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there. It doesn’t have to be expensive. The

greatest gift we can give our sons and daughters is our undivided attention.

UNITED TRIBUTE GALA The annual UNITED Tribute Gala took place on May 8 and recognized several organizations and individuals for their dedication to Denton County during 2020. The featured entertainment was a “Dancing with Our Stars” showcase of ten couples who volunteered to learn a group and solo dance. Pickleball is the fastest growing sport in America and has become a growing interest here in Lantana, too! FWSD #6 board member, Ross Ferguson, is proposing building 8 pickleball courts on a portion of 2.5 acres of undeveloped land along FM 407 adjacent to E.P. Rayzor Elementary School. Most people seem to be on board for this addition and love the idea of having more pickleball courts to play on!

FREE SUMMER MEALS PROGRAM The free meals students have been able to receive throughout the school year are extending through the summer and won’t end until Friday, August 6th! e’re barely into June, and things are starting to heat up! We’ve had mild temperatures so far, but if you’ve been in North Texas long then you know the 100°F temperatures will show themselves soon enough! We’re going to hit on a few things you should keep in mind as we transition into the summer season.️

MULCHING

When it is hotter outside try to keep the amount you prune off of your shrubs and lawn to a minimum. Trees and shrubs can react harshly if you cut back too much when temperatures are hot. On your grass spaces, letting the grass become a little taller/thicker will help hold moisture at the base of the sod – allowing you to water less and keep things greener in between cuttings. It’s nice to have a tight, low-cut lawn, but the shorter you go, you expose more of the base of the grass blades and the higher you run the risk of burning.

One of the best ways to grow healthy plants and conserve water is mulching. It protects the plantings, helps to hold moisture closer to the roots, prevents erosion and suppresses weed growth. Three inches of mulch is typically a reasonable amount for this area. Remember to keep it as even as possible and do not let it build up against tree trunks or bases of the plantings themselves.

IRRIGATION With the average household spending 40% to 50% of its summer water bill on irrigation make sure you’re water-wise. In our smaller lot communities we see a lot of water runoff/ loss, which prevents the water from making it into the ground. Test your irrigation for leaks, efficiency and adequate coverage. If you see water runoff within a couple of minutes, then its going to be better to set your system up to run shorter times more frequently. Also, keep in mind that once trees and shrubs are established they need less water than the turf so adjust your controller accordingly.

Fletcher’s iconic hot dog on a stick is to Texas what the lobster roll is to Maine or the Philly cheesesteak to Philadelphia. You see, as any true Texan can attest, the Fletcher family created the corny dog. It’s a portable meal in your hand. A little bit of Texas heaven. And a Texas tradition.

“My neighbor loves to remind me,” she reflects laughingly,

“that as a child of about 8 years old, I introduced myself to her

saying, “Hi, I’m Amber Fletcher from Fletcher’s Corny Dogs.”

Approaching their 80th year in business, Fletcher’s has evolved within each of the three generations. The original brothers

had the State Fair of Texas and one restaurant. The next descendants also had the State Fair, the debut of

mascot Mr. Corny in 1983, new corny dog flavors,

and multiple restaurant franchises that eventually closed due to economic downturns. But the

current generation has taken the brand to new

heights — all without sacrificing the deeply-rooted

Fletcher legacy.

These days, Fletcher’s takes its corny dogs to the

full service mobile catering trailers, giving fans greater

access to their corny dog at birthday parties, weddings, local

festivals, corporate events, and more. Their 10’x10’ pop-up tents

accommodate even more venues. A summertime limited edition

to the Fletcher family of dogs was introduced in May, called “Make Mine Texan.” It’s an all-beef and brisket dog with a natural smokey flavor that Texans can’t resist.

“The State Fair of Texas, where it all began,

always will be our priority,” Amber said. “Ninetynine percent of our products are sold in Texas,

and the majority is in the DFW area. We’ll ship

our corny dogs or take our catering trailer to

neighboring states when there’s a request.” And request they do. Transplanted Texans still

crave their Fletcher’s Corny Dogs.

In 2020, when the pandemic hit, anonymous donors

commissioned Fletcher’s catering to feed first responders and

hospitals. Requests expanded into other community businesses.

“When the State Fair of Texas announced closure in 2020, citizens emailed us asking what they can do to support the brand they’ve loved for years,” Amber explained. “That kind of loyalty saved our company.”

That level of customer patronage isn’t surprising.

almost 1 million residents reached for the stars in setting a goal of vaccinating as

many individuals as possible in a manner that has caught the attention of not only

We gave more than 371,700 vaccinations to residents across the region, providing a good base toward herd immunity

following more than a year of dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic.

These volunteers came from across

the U.S. – from Alaska to Arkansas as

well as from many of our neighboring counties and the communities within

the county. The Texas National Guard, FEMA, and other

organizations sent

he first impression of a home that is most critical is setting the stage for a potential buyer. It sets the tone for how the buyer sees the home, creating a perceived posture toward the home. Within 15 seconds of driving up to a home, the buyer will develop an attitude and expectation for what they will see on the inside based on its exterior curb appeal. Sometimes, a buyer will even drive away and forego viewing the inside of the home based on the exterior appearance and perceived care of the home. First impressions are challenging, especially when you have been in your home for a while. It is hard to look objectively at your own home’s exterior, but it’s crucial to view it with buyers’ eyes. A good way to gauge your home’s curb appeal is to take a walk down your street and compare the exterior of your neighbors’ homes to your home. enton County Sheriff’s Office Employee Spotlight - Lieutenant Curtis Stevenson was hired by The Denton County Sheriff’s Office in 1997 as a Detention Officer. While working in the Denton County Jail full-time on deep-nights and weekends at Denton County MHMR, Stevenson added 17 weeks attending the UNT Police Academy to his grueling schedule. After he obtained his Peace Officer License, he worked as a Patrol Deputy and Animal Control Officer.

Curtis left DCSO and worked at Sanger PD from 2008 – 2015. In 2015, Lt. Stevenson came back to Denton County for the Constable, Precinct 1. When Sheriff Murphree took office in 2017

Mental Health Investigator and has been busy climbing the career ladder since. When the Sergeant Position in mental

health came open, Lt. Stevenson with his

expertise in the mental health field as well as his relationships with our mental health partners made him the ideal candidate

for that position. And early this year, after a promotion within the Justice Logistics Division, a Lieutenant position was

available, and Curtis Stevenson promoted again to Lieutenant.

Lieutenant Stevenson also does a great deal of volunteer work such as delivering food to the American Legion Senior Center, handing out challenge coins to veterans to encourage them, participating in the holiday turkey dinner delivery at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center, participating with donations at the Monsignor King Outreach Center in Denton, and distributing food and hygiene products to the homeless population in Denton County. Lieutenant Stevenson was recently recognized by the Lake Cities Chamber of Commerce for his outstanding work as a first responder.

For everyone who works at The Med Spa of Flower Mound, seeing customers achieve their desired results is the only thing that matters. “Recently, I had a young lady with acne problems come to me. When I said to her that I am not accepting new clients due to my schedule, her mother begged for an exception… then I started her treatment,” said Jennifer Buck, who is the director at the spa. “A few weeks later, the girl came to me and said how confident she felt when her skin looked so much better.” This is the kind of story The Med Spa of Flower Mound has created all these years. Jennifer has 20 years of medical experience, and she is determined

The spa had to close its doors due to the pandemic last year for about six weeks;

however, they paid all their staff. The team utilized that time for education; they all

were learning new tools and techniques.

“We also did Zoom skin education sessions for clients to educate them about skincare, and we also delivered products to their home to ensure they could continue their regiment” Phil said. With the motto of helping “You grow old gracefully”, the spa is running successfully on community trust. Their business is growing by leaps and bounds even in the pandemic. “We are busier now than ever before,” says Renee Macneil, a medical assistant and certified senior laser technician. Renee was a high school teacher for 13 years and has been associated with the med spa for the 3+ years. “I love calling the med spa my midlife crisis career,” she said. “I cannot picture myself doing anything else. I especially enjoy building a rapport with my clients. It is important to me that they feel comfortable and that they leave here feeling their best. I take pride and pleasure in ensuring that my clients are well taken care of. They truly become like friends.” Margaret and Phil are proud to have welleducated, hard-working, personable, and a trustworthy staff who have a knack for paying attention to details. The team starts their day with music and a quick dance session… and that’s how they keep their spa full of positive vibes. The company also believes in giving back to the community. The Med Spa is a proud supporter of the Flower Mound Police Department. It also helps underprivileged children. Amidst the pandemic, the spa also provided a few nominated frontline workers with complete makeovers free of charge. very now and then, a rare moment happens when the skies open, planets align, and you just know a great opportunity is on the horizon. I’ve experienced that moment for at least eight years when my Ask The Dental Expert column falls perfectly into the Dental Expert Issue. The only challenge is that after eight years of explaining everything from pediatrics, geriatrics, health, and cosmetics to technology and prevention, it’s difficult to choose that one, inspiring and prolific dental topic that brings it all together. So, when it comes down to the single-most important dental point to get across, I’m going to choose two.

The first significant approach to dental health that I would hope to express is do not delay dental care. Dental disease like decay or periodontal disease does not get better. It gets worse over time. Many times, I see simple procedures evolve into complicated treatments simply because the initial treatment was ignored or delayed too long. Rarely with our health do we ignore conditions like infections or traumatized tissue, and your oral health should be approached the same way. This is especially true with the knowledge of oral and systemic health

associations. In addition to taking a hasty reactive attitude toward dental care, a proactive preventative approach is even more desirable to avoid unwanted dental conditions in the first place. As promised, the second bit of advice I would like to share is an unfortunate reality in today’s healthcare world: do not let your insurance dictate your treatment or your provider. There are many misconceptions about how insurance works with regards to the doctors you can see and the treatment you need. Insurance as a business focuses on your benefits, while it is your provider whose expertise will determine what is best for your health. Also, in-network vs. out-of-network or covered vs. non-covered should not be the determining factor when attempting to get the best care. In many cases, healthcare can be managed regardless of insurance status. It is often encouraged for patients to call their insurance to better understand its workings, but never let insurance take on the provider’s role of a clinical diagnosis. I hope that much is learned in this Dental Issue. Like many dentists, I am passionate about people’s dental health, whether they are my patients or not. eep your eyes peeled during the final few weeks leading up to the 2021 NBA Draft on July 29. Two former Guyer basketball stars could be coming to a professional basketball team near you.

Jalen Wilson and De’Vion Harmon announced in late March and early April, respectively, that they will test the NBA Draft waters to see what their chances are at playing professionally. Harmon, a point guard who has since transferred from the University of Oklahoma to Oregon, said he was not planning on hiring an agent when he declared for the draft. If he chooses not to stay in the draft and returns to school instead, it will be with the Ducks. Wilson, a redshirt freshman at Kansas, announced similar intentions in April. He could still return to the Jayhawks for his sophomore year, depending on how things go leading up to the draft.

Good editors are also avid readers.

They've edited "stuff" like yours before. They have empathy and good judgment. They don't inhibit your style.

Good editors don't make changes just to make changes. They improve sentences for readability. They can spot inconsistencies. They ensure every sentence counts. They explain the changes they made. They want to educate you. A good editor communicates promptly. They love that they helped you.

Slapping on one coat of paint after another can be draining if you’re going at it alone and still have the whole house to consider. And let’s not even start on the ceilings! But even if you stick to the same old exterior paint job, it doesn’t need to be so for the interior. And you could always try some wild and wonderful interior painting ideas. If nothing else, you’ll be guaranteed a reaction from all who enter your house. By keeping the exterior painting to a bare minimum, you can spend more time and creativity inside. You can let your imagination run riot with all those interior painting ideas you always wanted to implement but never got around to. There’s no time like the present, and really, when are you going to paint your house again? If you stick to the drab and uninspired, you can be assured that it won’t be at least for a few more generations.

I’m talking about... a paint job that will resemble you... Don’t get alarmed though, when I’m talking about out-of-this-world interior painting ideas. I’m not saying that you should go with something that might resemble a Picasso painting. I’m talking about something more along the lines of a paint job that will resemble you and reflect back on who you are. So, your interior painting ideas need not be anything bolder than a splash of vibrant color on one wall surrounded by soothing colors on the other walls. This works very well in any house, and the vibrant color that you pick out can be either soothing or primal depending on what you want to show of yourself. You could, of course, always go to extremes and paint all the walls a bright vibrant shade or even mix and match different

shades to different walls. If you’re doing this, then you might want to think about the effect you’ll have and whether you can actually live with the color scheme. Wild and inspired interior painting ideas are well and good, but you should always take into account whether you’re going to be able to stand the sight of your newly painted walls or not. If you have to repaint everything, it kind of defeats the purpose. This doesn’t mean that you should put a hold on your creativity or stifle your interior painting ideas. All it means is that for some of the bolder ideas you have, perhaps you should do a small test-run somewhere else. Don’t think that painting your house should be a chore, and if you really want, you can always think you’re Michelangelo or Da Vinci, or any one of those great artists, and even paint a stunning mural on your walls. The only requirement here is that you turn your great interior painting ideas into reality and that you have fun while you’re doing it.

This year, folks likely follow weather reports more closely than usual, turning to their favorite forecasters to advise them how their weekend is going to look or when to expect even more rain.

“I was the school meteorologist at Argyle,” Max explained. “My forecasts were up on TV monitors, and students would stop and watch. Our principal, Mr. [John] King, was happy to have it. And I think the students liked it, too.” Max added, “I was very shy, but not when doing the weather.” In early March of 2020, Max had 300 followers. He graduated in December 2020 with his Facebook following maintaining around 8,000! His following has consistently grown. When Hurricane

In January, Max and his family moved to south Florida, where he will be attending Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in the fall. His major? Meteorology, of course! “My goal is to be a broadcast meteorologist for a local weather station,” Max affirmed. “If you’re interested in weather, I firmly believe meteorology is the path to take. There are lots of opportunities within the field that don’t

include television, like behind the scenes at the National Weather Station. Storm chasing is another option.” Max’s Facebook audience will be happy to learn that the geographical move has not interrupted his forecasting for Denton County, solely due to his loyal followers. “I haven’t forecasted Florida, and I don’t intend to in the near future,” he attested. “I’m staying with Denton County.” Until college begins, Max is working on his site full-time with the backing of two sponsors. This young man clearly has his head in the clouds, and the forecast calls for a bright and sunny future.

The family moved to Denton County in 2017, making Argyle their home. Argyle High School became Max’s next opportunity to showcase his talents. He maintained the weather page, this time forecasting for Denton County.

Laura threatened the Texas Gulf Coast that prior August of 2020, Max’s predictions and coverage of this Category 4 storm were more accurate than those of seasoned meteorologists! The number of followers rose dramatically. Additionally, with COVID-19 added to the mix, it spurred a jump to around 4,000 followers. And February’s snow storm brought Max’s audience to 11,000, as he worked up to 10 hours a day on the site. It bears mentioning that the current number of followers has risen to 14,500!

Head to a nearby trail in the woods and go on a hike. Invite another family to join you and organize a soccer game, wiffle ball tournament, or relay races. Set up a badminton net in the backyard. Let each family member take turns choosing which activity to do on family nights, but keep the nights focused on fun fitness. Track Progress A great way to stay motivated as a family to keep exercising is to track individual progress. If one family member needs to lose weight and another is trying to bench press heavier weight, track their progress and encourage them along the way. And keep progress at the forefront with a chart on your refrigerator to track your family’s fitness goals. A Way of Life When fitness is incorporated into everyday life, it won’t become a drag or another thing to fit into your already busy schedule. Set aside just an hour two to three times a week to get moving as a family. Your kids will have fun and learn valuable life lessons.

CajunVEGETABLE Shrimp T

his quick and easy Cajun shrimp skillet is a great way to get dinner on the table fast without skimping on flavor. To save time, you can purchase pre-made Cajun seasoning. However, it is very easy to prepare at home, as well, and any excess seasoning can be stored in an airtight container for several months. As a bonus, homemade spice blends won’t include the preservatives found in prepared versions. Plus, preparing your own Cajun blend will allow you to control the level of heat by adjusting the amount of cayenne pepper used.

2-3 large cloves garlic, minced

Prep time: 20 minutes

1-2 T. Cajun seasoning, divided*

Cook time: 15 minutes

Sea salt and black pepper, to taste

Serves: 4-6

1 small yellow squash, sliced and cut into half rounds

CAJUN SEASONING INGREDIENTS: 1 T. garlic powder 1 T. smoked paprika ½ T. onion powder 2 t. dried oregano

1 medium orange or red bell pepper, finely diced 1 medium green bell pepper (or ½ large), finely diced

1 small zucchini, sliced and cut into half rounds 2 T. fresh parsley, finely chopped *Start with one tablespoon Cajun seasoning. Taste and adjust seasonings, as desired.

1 t. dried thyme 2 t. cayenne pepper 1 t. ground white pepper 2 t. fine sea salt SKILLET INGREDIENTS: 1 lb. jumbo shrimp, peeled and deveined 3 T. extra virgin olive oil, divided 3 3-oz. Cajun Andouille sausage links, sliced ½ medium white onion, finely diced 56 | LANTANA LIVING | JUNE 2021

DIRECTIONS: 1. Prepare the Cajun seasoning by combining all ingredients together in a bowl. Stir to combine and transfer to an airtight container. Set aside. 2. Toss the shrimp with one tablespoon olive oil and one-half tablespoon Cajun seasoning. Set aside. 3. Set a large skillet over medium heat and add the Andouille sausage. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the sausage is browned, approximately 4-5 minutes. Transfer sausage to a plate and set aside. 4. Add one tablespoon olive oil to the skillet, along with the seasoned shrimp. Spread the shrimp into a single layer without overcrowding. Cook, stirring once,

just until the shrimp is opaque and starts to curl, approximately 2 minutes. Do not overcook. Transfer shrimp to the plate with the sausage. 5. Add remaining olive oil to the skillet, along with the onion, garlic, and the diced bell pepper. Sprinkle with additional Cajun seasoning, to taste, and stir to combine. Cook, stirring frequently, until the vegetables soften and develop some color, approximately 4-5 minutes. 6. Add the yellow squash and zucchini to the skillet and cook, stirring frequently, just until browned and crisp tender, approximately 2-3 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in the Andouille sausage, shrimp, and fresh parsley. Stir to combine and serve immediately. Enjoy!

here are countless gorgeous tropical islands in the Caribbean Ocean, and I have traveled to most of them. So, what’s so special about St. Maarten? This island is the smallest land mass in the world to be shared by two different nations. It’s only 37 square miles and is governed by France and the Netherlands. There are endless pristine beaches, lagoons, mountains, luxury hotels, elegant villas, and over 300 restaurants with chefs from around the world. Shopping on the island is duty free, and casinos, discos, and night clubs stay open till dawn. We stayed at Simpson Bay Lagoon, the Caribbean’s largest lagoon. St. Maarten has become the yachting center of the Caribbean and home port to some of the world’s most outrageous mega-yachts — which are mostly in Simpson Bay. My favorite beaches: Cupecoy Beach on Mullet Bay has to be one of the most scenic regions on the entire island. The water is the most beautiful I’ve ever seen. The Dutch’s Mullet Bay is the quintessential Caribbean beach and runs along the island’s only 18-hole golf course. Orient Beach has long had the reputation as the most famous beach. It’s on the French side and is a fun experience. It is clothing optional and has a variety

of upscale beach restaurants. Here you will see wind/kite-surfers and many other sporting activities. And yes, the participants are fully clothed.

And the highlight of our trip was Pyratz Gourmet Sailing. It was the ultimate catamaran experience! This is a gourmet cruise that offers intimate catamaran day cruises around the island. I think this is the perfect Caribbean vacation destination!

Maho Beach is one of the area’s most famous attractions and is literally at the end of the SXM Airport runway. Nowhere else in the world can you witness take-offs and landings of jumbo-jets so closely. No wonder aviation fans from around the world go here for the very exciting “Maho Beach Airplane Experience!” We loved it. Other fun experiences: At Seaside Nature Park, we took a breathtaking horseback ride. The ride ended with us going to the beach where our horses went for a swim to cool off as we stayed in the saddle!
