I
read somewhere recently that women are the cornerstone of a family’s overall health. Needless to say, ensuring they have access to quality healthcare can lead to improved health for children and families. From pregnancy and childbirth to staying on top of breast cancer screenings, heart disease, osteoporosis, and even menopause, women’s health is a massive undertaking and something all of us — men included — should take very seriously. In the meantime, I thought I’d share a few inspiring quotes from women that relate to this topic. hen we think about luxury items, we think about fast cars, diamonds, name brand clothing, or even expensive bags. One thing that most likely doesn’t come to mind are feminine hygiene products. Most people would consider those products a necessity. But many women around the world know that that’s not the case. Non-profit organization, She Supply, has made it their mission to eliminate period poverty for women once and for all. The idea of She Supply began in August of 2016. Chairwoman of She Supply, Kathy Meyer, went on a youth choir mission trip and was introduced to the issue of period poverty. Seeing that this was an issue, Kathy got a group of women together for lunch where they discussed the notion of creating an organization to help women who were suffering from this injustice. In September of 2016, the group applied to be a non-profit organization. It was here that She Supply truly began to make a change in our society. “It started with women bringing items such as pads, tampons, and panty liners to group functions,” Vice Chairwoman, Dr. Lisa Pierce Johnson said. “Period poverty is effecting hundreds if not thousands of women in Denton County,” Lisa said. “We have 161,000 women in Denton County that live below the poverty line. The most shocking part of this is that feminine hygiene products are included as a luxury tax item. This means that women who live below the poverty line can’t use their Lonestar cards or government funds to purchase their feminine hygiene necessities, such as pads and tampons.

“Women are having to choose between food for their children and their need for feminine hygiene products,” Lisa said. What started as a small organization has quickly grown into something bigger than they ever imagined. “We started with three partner agencies, Pedi Place, Friends of the Family, and Salvation Army,” Lisa said. The foundation began with packing parties, where the women would take 10 feminine hygiene products and package them into little baggies and then deliver them to the partner agencies. “In the last four years She Supply has grown beyond belief. We now work with 15 partner agencies,” Lisa said.

“This year we’ve already exceeded our number of donations from last year,” Lisa said.
As of the end of July, She Supply had delivered 228,705 packages to their partnering agencies.
“People are blown away when we tell
them that feminine hygiene products are considered a luxury,” Lisa said.
The luxury tax was started during the
war and was intended to create funds for the militia. What started out as
helpful has now lost its usefulness. “No one believes that these products are a luxury,” Lisa said.
Period poverty is something that affects 1 in 4 women. And yet,
tampons and pads are some of the
least commonly donated items to homeless shelters and food banks. “No one wants to show up to a job interview and have a fear that they’ll have an accident,” Lisa said. “Having the resources to be able to receive feminine products creates a sense of decency and greatly impacts a woman’s confidence. We’re empowering women. We’re sisters lifting each other up.” She Supply has gone above and beyond to create feminine hygiene equality for the women of Denton County but also our surrounding areas. What started out as a small group of women wanting to meet a need has turned into an organization that is changing the lives of our locally deprived women. She Supply is opening the eyes of people everywhere that period poverty is a real thing and it’s time for a change.

GUYER SENIOR SPENDS WEEK AS SENATOR Guyer High School senior Jonathan Akinniyi was chosen for the American Legion’s Boys National camp where he was able to spend a week in Washington D.C. as a senator in a mock national government. Akinniyi was one of about 100 participants who were able to go to Marymount University and take part in this national government instruction. THE COLONY COUPLE SAVED BY CORINTH RESIDENT Corinth resident Lamar Woodham saved The Colony residents James Hasty and Nekima Horton from drowning in Lewisville Lake. Hasty and Horton were on jet skis when clear skies quickly turned into a huge storm causing waves to reach 5 feet high. They were both flipped off their jet ski and the current pushed the jet ski away from them. After an hour and a half of wading in the water Woodham was able to find them in the middle of the lake and pulled them onto his jet ski and took them back to safety.

t's all about family at Flower Mound's newest vegan establishment, Wicked BOLD Vegan Kitchen. Owners Deric and Brooklynn Cahill named the restaurant after their family members - Brooklynn, Ophelia, Landon, & Deric. And they began their vegan journey after they learned their daughter couldn't eat animal products like cheese and eggs.
Back in Florida, they started out with making vegan chocolate out of their apartment. And when they moved here to DFW, they decided to expand their chocolate business and also open up a vegan restaurant where they can share some of their favorite vegan products and recipes with the community.

evin Lively still feels like he hit the jackpot when he opened Mrs. Lively’s Cajun Konnection three years ago in Lake Dallas. Not only could he honor his late grandmother, Edith Lively, and mother, Judy, for teaching him the ways of southern cuisine, but his bayou-inspired menu gave this fishing community the Cajun kick it desperately needed.

The new 3,850 square-foot location opened on August 10 across the street from NCTC. It boasts triple the seating capacity compared to the original location and a revamped look that includes live entertainment, both inside and on the outdoor patio, a bar, New Orleans and Mardi Gras-inspired decor that makes you feel like you’ve been transported to the heart of the bayou, and an expanded menu with items that’ll make your tastebuds do cartwheels in your mouth. While closed for the time being, Kevin plans to reopen the Lake Dallas spot under the new name, Mrs. Lively’s Catfish Whole. That means there are TWO Mrs. Lively’s restaurants in the Lake Cities. “From the moment I shared that I had the keys to this new place two and a half months ago, our social media has been blowing up,” Kevin said. “We have people telling us, ‘You’re so close to our house now.’ Had it not been for Lake Dallas, there’s no way we would have had the opportunity to do what we’re doing. But now we have more exposure.” It’s hard to argue against the fact that Mrs. Lively’s has been a hidden gem for far too long. To get to the original location, patrons needed to exit the highway and travel all the way down Hundley Drive through the neighborhoods as if they were going to Willow Grove Park or the marina. If you didn’t know Mrs. Lively’s was back there, you’d miss it.

Granted, Kevin’s amazing menu was reason enough to help people find his restaurant, but that didn’t change the fact that one of the more common statements besides, “This food is delicious,” was “We had no idea you were here. How long have you been here?” He won’t have that problem with the new location, as it is right off I-35 centrally located for existing and new customers. “The amount of exposure is going to be tremendous,” he said. is prepared daily with fresh ingredients and cooked with only the finest signature spices. And let’s not forget about their mouthwatering desserts like pecan cobbler, buttermilk pie, and bread pudding. Kevin only cooks up the best because that’s what Edith and Judy taught him from the time he was three years old. It was at that tender age that young Kevin would stand eagerly in a straightback chair in front of the stove in his grandmother’s modest Louisiana kitchen and help her cook several of her many famous Cajun recipes. They’d do everything from fry eggs and prepare out-of-this-world gumbo, shrimp, and jambalaya to bake homemade biscuits and desserts. The smells and soulful flavors from that kitchen are still strong in Kevin’s mind and heart today. “They had the big bowls – you’d sift the flour, work the dough, and pinch the biscuits off. I remember doing all of that.”

Just hearing Kevin talk proves how much cooking and owning his own restaurant in a way that honors his family upbringing means to him. F
or perhaps the first and only time in his life, Rick Turner didn’t know what to do.
A military hero and Purple Heart recipient who served in Panama and Iraq between 1989 and 1993, Turner sat stunned as he read a 2012 newspaper article about a young 82nd Airborne Paratrooper named Travis Mills. Staff Sergeant Mills was defending his country when he unknowingly set his rucksack down on an improvised explosive device (IED). The bomb went off, and Travis lost all four limbs. As Turner continued to read, tears welled up in his eyes. Then came devastation, anger, and confusion. “I didn’t know how to react or what to do. I was ready to just give this kid my paycheck,” said Turner, who was a journeyman electrician at the time. “I just wanted to help.”

Turner and his wife, Tancy, quickly found a solution. And over the past nine years, their once small initiative has quickly become a well-oiled machine known as Spirit of a Hero. The 501(c)3’s mission is to provide financial, moral, and community support to veterans of the United States armed forces. To date, they’ve raised thousands of dollars through motorcycle rides and charitable galas for veterans and their families and also helped remodel homes to make them handicap accessible. Their first year in 2012 saw them raise 31,805 dollars for Travis Mills, courtesy of a motorcycle ride that featured over 1,800 bikers and stretched from Dallas to the Lake Cities. The 2021 recipient is Marine Corps SGT Michael Carnell. The 10th Annual Motorcycle Ride & Benefit Concert for SGT Carnell is slated for October 16. The ride will start at Strokers in Dallas at 11 a.m. and end at American Eagle Harley-Davidson in Corinth later that day. The cost is $35 per bike. Clearly, the Turner’s small idea has come a long way. “I remember Tancy coming up to me and saying, ‘I have a great idea about a motorcycle ride,’” Turner said of the first

DIRECTIONS 1. Add 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, oregano, thyme, and half the garlic powder to a small bowl and stir to combine. Set aside. 2. Add one tablespoon olive oil and the remaining butter to a large nonstick skillet set over medium-high heat. Pat the salmon fillets with paper towels and add to the hot skillet skin side down. Sprinkle with the remaining garlic powder and season with salt and black pepper, as desired.
3. Cook until the salmon skin is nicely browned and crispy, approximately 4-5 minutes. Carefully turn the fillets and cook on the remaining side for another 3-4 minutes, or until the salmon is golden brown and cooked through. 4. Remove from heat and transfer the salmon to a platter. Add remaining olive oil to the skillet and set over medium heat. Add garlic, zucchini, yellow squash, and
tomatoes. Season with salt and black pepper, to taste, and stir to combine. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables are tender and nicely browned, approximately 4-5 minutes. 5. Return the salmon to the skillet and top each fillet with some of the herb butter and a squeeze of fresh lemon juice. Garnish with fresh chopped parsley and serve immediately. Enjoy!
