Happy New Year! Now that the holidays are behind us, it’s time to take stock of this brand-new year ahead. It’s time to refresh, renew and maybe even tackle some new projects. One of my own projects will be decluttering. We tend to hold on to stuff for far longer than we need to. I’m going to try the one-year rule, if I haven’t used it in a year, I’m going let it go. It’s also a great opportunity to donate items to local charities. We are working on some great articles for you in the coming year. We always feature a local charity each month with an article in the magazine. Do you know of or are involved with a charity that would like to have an article? Please reach out and let us know so that we can contact them. Also, we are always looking for local community events that we can feature in The Local Buzz. If you have a local fundraiser or event coming up in the next couple of months, let us know, we would love to publish the information for you. Check out our article about the best ideas for planning a party for the Big Football Game and the Valentine’s Day Gift Guide. Until next month, keep up the good work on those New Year’s resolutions and we wish you smooth sailing as you tackle those new projects!

FROM THE DESK OF THE SUPERINTENDENT Jerry D. Hollingsworth, Ed.D., Superintendent of Schools, Eagle Mountain-Saginaw ISD

There is so much to celebrate as we begin 2026! As a new year begins, it offers a natural moment to pause, reflect, and look ahead with optimism. Across Eagle Mountain-Saginaw ISD, we are entering the spring semester energized by the accomplishments of our students and inspired by the role our schools play in shaping the future of this community. There is so much to celebrate as we begin 2026. Across our district, students continue to shine in extraordinary ways. This fall, EMS ISD students captured state championships in athletics, earned top honors in prestigious Career and Technical Education competitions, and received statewide recognition for excellence in fine arts. These achievements are the result of talent, dedication, and countless hours of practice and preparation—but they also reflect the strong systems of support surrounding our students every day. Just as encouraging are the gains we are seeing in student engagement. During the first semester alone, districtwide attendance increased by approximately one percent. That may sound small, but it represents thousands of additional

instructional hours for students—time spent learning, collaborating, performing, competing, and growing. Every day in school matters, and this progress tells us that families, students, and staff are working together to build strong habits that support long-term success. As the semester begins, our campuses are once again alive with energy and purpose. In fact, our brand new Wayside Middle School welcomed students for the first time on Janu-

ary 6. Across the district, classrooms are filled with curiosity. Hallways buzz with conversation and connection. From academic pursuits to athletics, fine arts, and career pathways, students are stepping into opportunities that challenge them and help them discover who they are and who they want to become. It is a privilege to witness this growth firsthand.

As we begin this new year, I want to thank everyone who plays a role in the success of Eagle Mountain-Saginaw ISD. There is much to be proud of, and even more to look forward to. I wish our students, families, and community a happy and healthy new year, and I look forward to all that we will accomplish together in the months ahead.

HEALTHY HABITS MADE EASY Update Your Pet’s Health and Wellness Routine Without Fuss Pets are more than companions – they’re family – and keeping them healthy can be simple, enjoyable and rewarding. Today’s pet parents may be busier than ever, yet they’re also more committed to wellness than previous generations. That means approaching their furry friends’ unique needs with the same balance, care and attention to overall well-being as they do their own. Animal Bond Research Institute Benchmark Survey of Pet Owners, increased knowledge about the health benefits of the human-animal bond led 91% of pet owners to say they would be more likely to take better care of their pets. Pet health isn’t just about food, however. A holistic approach to wellness combines daily supplements, dental care, exercise, mental enrichment and proactive health, with many owners looking for ways to simplify routines to support their pets every day. These practical ideas can help support a pet’s overall wellness routine. Tailor Flexible Nutrition Plans to Pets’ Needs Every pet is unique, but balanced nutrition forms the foundation of wellness. Dog and cat parents are increasingly seeking customizable food and supplement solutions designed around their furry friend’s age, needs and lifestyle. Age-specific formulations and products featuring natural, minimally processed ingredients and eco-friendly sourcing allow owners to support their pets’ overall health, from mealtime to daily wellness routines. Support Healthy Skin and Coat A pet’s coat often reflects its overall health. Along with a balanced diet and plenty of water, adding a daily supplement can help support a natural shine. While professional grooming keeps dogs and cats looking their best, incorporating regular at-home brushing and bathing with a gentle shampoo strengthens the bond you share and provides an opportunity to spot any changes, like lumps or bumps. Enhance Pet Wellness with Functional Support Even with a balanced diet, many pets may benefit from extra support to maintain their overall well-being. Functional supplements can help target specific needs, including joint mobility, immunity and stress relief. For example, NaturVet’s easy-to-use Lickable supplements.

ments – available in Hip & Joint, Calming and Multi-Vitamin formulas for dogs and cats – offer a simple way to make wellness an effortless part of everyday life. Promote Exercise and Mental Enrichment

Movement is essential to any wellness routine. Regular walks, agility activities and games help keep pets fit and happy. Physical exercise is only part of the puzzle, though. Interactive toys, puzzle feeders, scent games and agility training help dogs and cats stay mentally sharp, even on days when outdoor activity is limited. Create a Calming Home Environment Dogs and cats can experience stress when routines aren’t followed, just like people. Maintaining a consistent daily schedule and providing a quiet, comfortable space – such as a bed in a low-traffic area – can help promote calm, comfort and security.

By taking a few simple, consistent steps each day, pet parents can create a balanced, enjoyable wellness routine that keeps their furry family members healthy, happy and thriving. From functional supplements and daily care habits to exercise, mental enrichment and a calming environment, small efforts can make a big difference, turning everyday care into a rewarding part of life with your pet. To find more practical health and wellness solutions for your pet, visit naturvet.com.

5 Easy Steps to Help Pet Owners Build Creating a consistent health and wellness routine doesn’t have to be complicated. Consider these simple steps: 1. Start slow. Introduce new supplements or activities gradually to avoid overwhelming pets. 2. Be aware. Review product labels and ingredient certifications to ensure they are safe and appropriate for your pet. 3. Incorporate naturally. Mix functional supplements into meals or use them as a reward for good behavior. 4. Stay consistent. Small daily actions can add up to long-term health and wellness. 5. Monitor and adjust. Work with a veterinarian to create a tailored plan and observe your pet’s energy, mobility and mood, adjusting as needed.

GLOW through the

COLD WINTER HYDRATION MATTERS MORE THAN YOU THINK

by Local Results Media

C

old weather may feel refreshing after a sweltering Texas summer, but your skin and hair don’t always share the enthusiasm. Winter air is naturally drier, indoor heaters suck even more moisture from the environment, and before you know it, your once-glowy skin and smooth strands start feeling dull, tight, and thirsty. That’s why winter hydration is less about guzzling gallons of water (though that helps!) and more about smart, consistent moisture habits.

Hair suffers a similar fate — cuticles lift, frizz creeps in, and breakage becomes all too common.

When temperatures drop, the skin’s natural lipid barrier weakens, making it harder to retain hydration. The result? Flakiness, irritation, and that “my face suddenly feels two sizes too small” sensation.

For hair, weekly deep-conditioning masks, leave-in treatments, and oils such as argan or jojoba restore softness and guard against the harsh, dry air.

While drinking water remains a cornerstone of wellness, true winter radiance comes from hydrating inside and out. Start by swapping your lightweight summer moisturizer for a richer, ceramide-packed cream that locks in moisture. Hyaluronic acid serums also shine this time of year, pulling water into the skin and keeping it there.

Don’t overlook environmental helpers either. A simple humidifier can transform your home into a hydration haven, giving both hair and skin the moisture they desperately crave. Shorter, lukewarm showers (we know — hard to give up!) prevent excess dryness, and silk pillowcases cut down on overnight friction that can lead to frizz and irritation. Finally, nourish your glow from within. Foods rich in healthy fats — think avocados, salmon, walnuts, and olive oil — help reinforce skin and hair health at the cellular level. Winter may be dry, but your hair and skin don’t have to be. With the right habits, you can stay soft, smooth, and glowing straight through spring.

From Little Ballers to Leagues: How Hi-Five Sports Club Serves Every Age — Building Skills, Confidence and Community for our Youth by Colleen McCullough | photos courtesy of Kacee Anderson Photography

A

s families continue to pour into the Northwest DFW area, parents are looking for meaningful, safe, and engaging ways to keep their children active — especially when weather isn’t conducive to being outside. Hi-Five Sports Club was created to meet that exact need, offering a high-quality sports and enrichment experience for children during their most formative years. Hi-Five Sports Club is a leading youth sports and entertainment franchise

designed for children primarily in kindergarten through fifth grade, while serving a broader age range of 2- to 12-year-olds. The inspiration behind the local HiFive Sports Club came from a simple but powerful realization. When the founders’ children were ages 6 and 10, there were limited sports organizations that focused on skill development, fun,

and age-appropriate instruction — particularly options that were indoors and accessible during unpredictable weather and extreme summer heat. With that gap in mind, Hi-Five Sports Club was brought to the Fort Worth area to create a welcoming place where children could stay active year-round while learning foundational athletic skills in a positive environment. Though the Hi-Five Sports Club franchise has been serving communities for 32 years, the Fort Worth location owned by Ira and Whitney Johnson, recently celebrated its one-year anniversary. Ira originally from Michigan, and Whitney from Ohio, were called to Texas through a strong connection to their now home church. Then the plan for a franchise took shape.

Programs Designed for Every Age Hi-Five Sports Club offers thoughtfully structured programs that grow alongside each child. For the youngest athletes, Little Ballers introduces children as young as two years old to sports through activities that support both gross and fine motor development. These early experiences help build coordination, balance, confidence, and a love of movement — all while having fun. As children grow, Multi-Sports Classes allow participants to explore a wide variety of sports, including baseball, football, basketball, soccer, pickleball, and volleyball. This approach helps children discover their interests while developing well-rounded athletic skills, rather than specializing too early. Hi-Five Sports Club focuses on teaching sports the right way, emphasizing both fun and fundamentals. Clinics, League and Skill Development For children ready to dive deeper, HiFive Sports Club offers clinics, training and leagues that typically run six to eight weeks. These programs focus on skill progression, including drills for coordination, passing, shooting, defense, and gameplay strategies. Sessions often culminate in tournament-style play, preparing participants for Hi-Five Hoops Leagues, while maintaining a supportive atmosphere. Specialty offerings include Hoops Clinics, Multi-Sports Clinics, and the sport clinics in flag football, baseball, volleyball, and soccer, as well as separate girls’ and boys’ basketball leagues. Each program is designed to help children learn the fundamentals while building confidence, sportsmanship, and teamwork. Camps That Keep Our Kids Moving All Year Long One of Hi-Five Sports Club’s most popular offerings is its indoor summer camp, which runs eight to 10 weeks and features different sports and activities each week. Because the camps are held indoors, children stay cool and active even during peak summer temperatures. Families can

choose week-to-week options or enroll for the entire session, offering flexibility for busy schedules. In addition to summer programming, Hi-Five Sports Club provides school break camps during Fall Break, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Spring Break, ensuring children remain active, engaged, and learning even when school is out. Weather-permitting, outdoor sports may also be offered in the mornings, giving children the chance to enjoy fresh air while staying safe from the afternoon heat.

and district partnerships, with plans to eventually open a dedicated facility. In 2026, Hi-Five Sports Club aims to increase brand recognition, expand into surrounding school districts and charter and private schools, and continue building partnerships that strengthen youth development across the region. At its core, Hi-Five Sports Club is about more than athletics. It’s about creating a place where children can grow stronger, more confident, and more connected — one high five at a time.

It ’s

GAME From the tailgate, to the final whistle, and everything in between. Put your game plan together for Football’s Favorite Sunday.

TIME!

1. REP THE TEAMS

Get your guests pumped for the big game with fan gear for each team. Party supply stores carry beaded necklaces, balloons, tutus, pom-poms, temporary tattoos, face paint, feather boas, wigs, and even life-size cut-outs of the players! Don’t be afraid to go all out and have fun!

2. PHOTO BOOTH

Carry on the costume fun with a photo station! There are tons of rental companies in DFW. You can even make a DIY setup with a ring light and an iPad. Add a football-themed backdrop, and you’re bound to be nominated MVP by your guests!

3. GAMEDAY EATS

Let’s be honest, the endless appetizers and finger food are what really steal the show. A classic arrangement of pigs-in-a-blanket, nachos, chili dogs, mac and cheese, wings, sliders, pizza, chips and salsa, and baked potatoes with all the fixings will surely keep everyone energized throughout the game.

www.287NorthLiving.com

4. BRING ON THE DRINKS

What’s an American sport without an American beverage? Grab a case (or two) of beers from the teams’ home cities, or make two cocktail options for each team based on their jersey colors. And for a non-alcoholic drink, Coca-Cola, of course!

5. DESSERT-GAME STRONG

Decorate a cake to resemble a football field! Bake a chocolate sheet cake. While you’re waiting, crush up some Oreos to sprinkle on top when the cake has finished baking. Wait for it to cool, then fill a pastry bag with green frosting, using a grass tip to replicate a turf field. Next, draw out the end lines and mark them with the appropriate numbers. Lastly, add any other football-themed decorations you want to it: mini field goals, footballs, football player figurines, and sprinkles for confetti!

6. FOOTBALL SQUARES

Squares is a popular betting game that uses a grid scoring system that randomly assigns each corresponding columns and rows a numerical value of 1-9. It’s fun to keep everyone engaged and excited throughout the entire game!

HOW TO PLAY: 1. Write one team’s name in the spaces on the X axis and the other on the Y axis. 2. Invite your guests to enter the pool by paying an entrance fee*. Each player locks-in their bet(s) by marking a box of their choice with their initials**. 3. Randomly assign each corresponding column and row a numerical value of 1-9. Start from left to right, using an online number picker to maintain fairness; then do the same from top to bottom. It’s important that all of this is completed BEFORE kickoff! 4. Now that your grid is complete, all you need to do is wait for the game to start! A winner will be determined by the score at the end of the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Quarters, and at Final Game. Match the numbers on the grid with the last number (single digits) of each team’s score, and see which square is at the intersection of that row and column. For example, if the Red Team has a score of 23, the correct number you refer to is 3. 5. Winner payouts are typically 20% of the pot for Quarters 1-3 winners, and 40% for the Final Score Winner. Good luck, and may the best team win! *Depending on the stakes, either charge per box or split the grid evenly among the group for a general fee. **Determine the order of picks with a random drawing, or on a first-come-first-served basis.

Shopping at Costco on a Wednesday with all the other old folks is a win for me. Let’s talk about boundaries, because that’s a realization that takes decades to earn. For years, many of us said yes out of obligation, guilt, or habit. Yes to things we didn’t want to do. Yes to people who drained us. Yes because it felt easier than explaining. The truth? The Italian name for these lamb chops is “scottadito” which means “scorches the finger.” Quite literally, they are so tempting and so delicious that you can’t wait to pick them up to eat them, even when they are piping hot! Ask your butcher for 3 racks of lamb and have them frenched and cut into chops or lollipops. Then be sure to trim all but a very thin layer of fat. We absolutely love grilled lamb lollipops, but a good hot cast-iron skillet works perfectly, too. They only need a total of about 5 minutes on the heat to cook to a perfect medium temperature.

Ingredients

Instructions

Coarse sea salt and freshly ground pepper or Kosher salt

2. In a small bowl, combine the garlic, rosemary, thyme, and salt. Add the oil and whisk until combined.

3 racks lamb frenched, cut into chops, and trimmed of all but thin layer of fat

3 cloves garlic minced 1 tablespoon rosemary fresh, chopped 1 tablespoon thyme fresh, chopped ¼ cup olive oil 1 lemon cut into wedges

1. Liberally sprinkle the chops with salt and pepper.

3. Pour the marinade over the chops and turn to coat. Cover with plastic wrap and place in the fridge for at least 2 hours, or overnight. 4. Heat a large heavy skillet over medium-high heat, or turn your grill on medium-high heat for direct heat grilling. 5. Sear the chops (in batches if using a hot skillet) until browned on both sides, about a total of 4 to 5 minutes for medium to medium-rare. 6. Transfer to a platter and squeeze a lemon wedge over the top. Sprinkle with a little more sea salt, if desired. Serve at once.

In 2013, Brenda purchased a modest 1,400-square-foot building in Lake Worth with plans to open a day center for adults with disabilities. At the time, she had no idea she was also becoming the steward of a remarkable piece of Texas history. GEM

2026 COLOR OF THE YEAR A Guide for Homeowners in North Texas

A

by Madison Reed

s we look ahead to 2026, homeowners are being invited to refresh their spaces with shades that feel both modern and rooted. One of the most compelling picks this year is Behr’s “Hidden Gem,” described as a “smoky jade” — a deep, bluegreen hue that is muted yet rich, and built to stand the test of time. Here’s how you, as a homeowner in North Texas, can bring Hidden Gem (or one of the other 2026 leading shades) into your house thoughtfully and stylishly:

Choose Your Delivery Before you grab a paint roller, decide how bold you want to be. A deep shade like Hidden Gem can either dominate a room as an accent or work as an all-over color if balanced well with lighter tones. For example:

•

Use it on a single focal wall, built-in cabinetry, or a cozy reading nook.

•

Consider painting the lower half of a room or the backs of bookshelves — letting texture and lighting do the rest.

•

Pair it with crisp off-whites, warm metallics, or natural wood finishes to keep it grounded and welcoming.

30 | 287 NORTH LIVING | JAN 16 - FEB 20, 2026 | ISSUE 01

Let the Natural Light Help In our North Texas homes, light shifts dramatically throughout the day. Hidden

Gem reacts beautifully to sunlight, revealing teal-green undertones in the morning and deeper blue tones in the evening. Before committing:

•

Test a large swatch on multiple walls over a couple of days.

•

Notice how the color changes with both electric

Make sure the tone complements your flooring

(wood, tile, carpet) and key furnishings (sofa, dining set, curtains).

Enhance With Complementary Accents Because Hidden Gem is rich and saturated, pairing it with the right accents will create balance instead of contrast.

Some ideas:

•

Choose brass or brushed gold hardware and fixtures — the warm metal pops beautifully against the hue.

•

Add textured pillows or throws in oatmeal,

•

Incorporate natural elements like teak wood,

champagne, or rust to tie the room together. woven baskets, or care-style accents to reinforce the “grounded elegance” that designers are talking about for 2026.

www.287NorthLiving.com

Apply Strategically Room by Room Living Room: Frame a fireplace wall or TV wall in Hidden Gem, then use lighter tones on adjacent walls. Kitchen/Dining Area: Paint cabinets or an island in the shade — keep walls neutral for balance. Bedroom: Use Hidden Gem on the wall behind the bed, paired with crisp linens and warm wood accents for a serene atmosphere. Exterior/Front Door: A deep jewel tone like this can give instant curb appeal while remaining timeless. Powder Room or Hallway: Smaller spaces are perfect for a color-drenched moment without overwhelming.

Be Ready for the Long Haul The best part about using a color selected for “2026” is that it’s designed to last beyond one season. That means:

•

Invest in quality paint with proper finish and coverage to avoid frequent touch-ups.

•

Resist the pull to oversaturate with trend accessories — instead use flexible, long-term accents.

•

Document your color choice and paint order (brand, exact formula) so you can easily match it in future rooms if you expand the palette.

Final Thoughts 2026 isn’t just about using new colors — it’s about intentional living, grounded elegance, and spaces that reflect you. Whether you go full Hidden Gem, choose one of the variety-of-brand alternatives (deep reds, creamy neutrals, or rich greens), or simply use the idea as inspiration, the end goal is the same — a home that feels refreshed and personal. Want to chat ideas, view large sample swatches, or see how this shade pairs in a real room here in the local area? We’d love to hear from you — your home, your style, your choice.

Because Hidden Gem is rich and saturated, pairing it with the right accents will create balance instead of contrast.

Here’s to a year of color, comfort, and meaningful design.
