George Benjamin: Into the Little Hill – magyarországi bemutató A darab 2006-ban keletkezett, a szerző műfaji meghatározása szerint „lírai mese két részben” (lyric tale in two parts). A librettót Martin Crimp készítette.

Esther-Elisabeth Rispens A belga énekeső a brüsszeli La Monnaie gyermekkórusában kezdte zenei tanulmányait, a genti Művészeti Főiskolán klasszikus ének és tanári szakon szerzett diplomát. Lemezfelvételei közül Gerald Barry The Importence of Being Earnest c. operáját 2016-ban Grammy-díjra jelölték.

2018 óta énekel a Magyar Állami Operaház produkcióiban.

Forte Társulat A Forte Társulatot Horváth Csaba rendező-koreográfus alapította 2005ben. A színészek alkotta formáció egy Magyarországon kevéssé ismert formanyelv létrehozásával kísérletezik, céljuk egy új, homogén nyelv megteremtése testekkel, hangokkal, tánccal, zenével és szöveggel. Az ily módon újrafogalmazott fizikai színházi műfaj megpróbál másképpen gondolkodni történetmesélésről, szituációról, jelenetezésről, színpadi időről, játéktérről, hatásdramaturgiáról, és egy egészen izgalmas és eredeti színészi játékot hív elő. Előadásaikban – a tánc mellett – a társművészetek is lényegi szerephez jutnak. A tánc maga is képzőművészet” – vallja Horváth Csaba.

VAJDA GERGELY

9

Péter Esterházy – Gergely Vajda: Fuharosok (Transporters) – premiere Gergely Vajda was inspired to compose his mono-concert-opera by the first, 1983 version of Péter Esterházy’s now cultic novel, Fuharosok. If Esterházy’s book is what philosopher and literary historian Péter Balassa called “the strophic condensation of a long novel,” Vajda’s work is the 21st-century version of a romantic opera, condensed into less than an hour and employing a mezzo-soprano voice and a chamber orchestra. Zsófika, a girl, is the heroine and narrator of the story, which Vajda reads as the revisiting or re-enacting of a trauma, with the help of a child’s drawings, puppets, dolls, perhaps even costumes. Zsófi performs all the roles, “Our Mother, my sisters, the Fool,” a.k.a. “the Knight,” and of course the “waggoners (fuharosok).” The only way to process the rape is to evoke every detail of the entire story. “My work is an opera in the way Esterházy’s is a novel,” says Vajda, who salutes the closing gesture of the book by writing at the beginning of his score: “This opera contains, in a literal or distorted form, quotes from Joseph Haydn, György Kurtág, György Ligeti, Charlie Parker, Arnold Schoenberg and Richard Wagner.” “The text doesn’t lend itself easily to interpretation,” the composer said. “It is often impossible to tell who the speaker is, whether it’s an external voice or the heroine, Zsófika, talking, or some other character. I also had to find the passages that could be rendered in music. It’s a very lyrical text, incidentally, it’s like free verse, though Esterházy calls it a novel, which is of course another twist. Where the text repeats itself, or is difficult to understand, the story is not linear, I wanted to make it simpler so that the storyline could be followed. I happen to have a very interesting book, a collection of the lectures delivered at a conference on literary postmodernism and deconstruction, held in Szeged in 1998, where the subject was Fuharosok. It taught me a lot about the possible ways of reading this text. Someone, for instance, mentions Balázs Galkó’s recital of Fuharosok, and he is cited as saying there is only one way to represent this piece on stage, as a recollection, or a reliving of what happened. I too think this story is like drama therapy, or self-therapy, where the little girl tells herself what happened, enacts it again, in an attempt to process the trauma. And music is very much suitable for creating the obscurity that is typical of ballads and that Esterházy rendered with literary means.” Anna Molnár sung at the concert-hall premiere, but the work can be performed by several singers as well. “There’s a short moment, important for the dramaturgy, a single line, which can be sung in trio, a cappella. The other voice parts, which are for single voices, can grouped for roles the way roles are doubled

10

or tripled in theatre – but I want to give a free hand to the future director because the piece itself makes it possible. You could, say, have a young, a middle-aged and an old Zsófi. There would be additional meaning generated by who says which sentence, but that was another thing I didn’t want to pin down. I’m simply interested to see what emerges when I leave this layer open.” George Benjamin: Into the Little Hill – Hungarian premiere The composer defined the genre of this piece from 2006, whose libretto was the work of Martin Crimp, as a “lyric tale in two parts.” This is already an indication that the story of the Pied Piper of Hamelin will not be related with the classical means of dramaturgy. Everything that all the characters say is entrusted to two narrators, a soprano and an alto. The piece was commissioned by the Festival d’Automne à Paris, and the premiere featured Anu Komsi and Hilary Summers, as well as Ensemble Modern. The soprano is cast in the roles of The Crowd, The Stranger, the Narrator, The Minister’s Child and The Children, whereas the alto impersonates The Crowd, the Narrator, The Minister, The Minister’s Wife and The Mothers. The libretto employs a mixture of direct and reported speech, which literary historian Elisabeth Angel-Perez called “self-narration.” This distinctive story-telling perspective has much in common with the narrative technique of Fuharosok – both the novel and the opera. Special solutions abound in the orchestration: the cimbalom, the mandolin and the banjo evoke the archaic, folk origins of the story; the contrabass clarinet and the basset horn enhance the gloomy, dark colours; and the magic instrument of the Piper is represented by the bass flute. In the first scene, a crowd is outraged by the rat infestation. The Minister tries to calm people, but they demand the rats be exterminated if the Minister wants their votes. At night, the Minister meets a frightful stranger who offers to get rid of the rats in exchange for a large sum of money. The Minister is forced to swear on the bargain. After a short instrumental interlude, the Minister’s Child expresses disbelief at the sight of the rats wearing clothes and carrying suitcases and babies. Her mother reassures her they will die with dignity. The Minister is of course re-elected, and the Stranger comes to collect his payment. The Minister insists the rats left of their own accord, and refuses to pay. The Stranger reminds him of their bargain and leaves. After another short instrumental interlude, people realize that their children are missing. The Mother confronts the Minister, asking “where is my child?” The Children respond that they are “inside the Little Hill ... with the angel under the earth.”

Esther-Elisabeth Rispens The Belgian singer began her musical studies at the Children’s Choir of La Monnaie, Brussels. She graduated from the Ghent School of Arts as a classical singer and teacher of music. She is very active as the performer and co-creator of new music, and has been responsible for the premiere of many compositions. During the IMPULS Festival in Graz (2019), she gave six different premieres of works written by young composers, in collaboration with Andreas Fischer (Neue Vocalsolisten Stuttgart) and singer-composer Agata Zubel. She is a member of Nemø Ensemble, an experimental music group that has been featured at acclaimed festivals and concerts. Katalin Károlyi One of the most significant pieces of music composed for her is György Ligeti’s cycle, With Pipes, Drums, Fiddles, which she has performed at the Carnegie Hall, the Royal Albert Hall and the Concertgebouw. Other composers she inspired include György Kurtág, Barnabás Dukay, Zoltán Jeney, László Sáry, Gerald Barry, John Woolrich and Yannis Kyriakides, and she is regularly featured in operas and concerts conducted by William Christie, Philippe Herreweghe, George Benjamin, Gergely Vajda and Thomas Adés. She has performed at such prestigious concert venues as Milan’s La Scala, the Opéra national de Paris and the Wigmore Hall, and she closely collaborates with some of the world’s leading chamber ensembles, such as Les Arts Florissants, the UMZE Chamber Orchestra and the Asko|Schönberg. She can be heard on the CD of Gerald Barry’s opera, The Importance of Being Earnest, which in 2016 was nominated for the Grammy Award. Anna Molnár Contemporary and baroque music, operas and lieder, play a prominent role in the career of the mezzo-soprano. She has given several solo recitals in the Main Hall and the György Solti Chamber Music Hall of the Liszt Academy, at Müpa Budapest, the Budapest Music Center and FUGA. She has often been the featured soloist of the Hungarian Radio Symphonic Orchestra, Orfeo Orchestra and UMZE Ensemble, and has appeared in concert with the Budapest Strings, the Danubia Orchestra Óbuda and the MÁV Symphony Orchestras. She regularly sings the works of contemporary composers, including pieces dedicated to her, and often premieres new opuses. Since 2017 she has repeatedly taken part as a soloist at the Péter Eötvös Contemporary Music Foundation’s conductor and composer courses, with Péter Eötvös and Gergely Vajda as directors. She made her debut at the Hungarian State Opera in 2018. Her repertoire includes such challenging 20th-century masterpieces as the works of Webern, Schoenberg, Boulez and Berio.

UMZE Ensemble The Association of New Hungarian Music is the spiritual heir of the New Hungarian Music Association (UMZE), whose founders in 1911 included Bartók and Kodály. It seeks to keep the now classical compositions of the 20th century on the concert repertoires, as well as to promote the latest works of contemporary Hungarian and foreign composers. The association was established in 2005 by seventeen seminal creators and performers of Hungarian music: András Batta, Gábor Csalog, László Dobszay, Péter Eötvös, Zoltán Jeney, András Keller, Brigitta Kovács, György Kurtág, György Ligeti, Miklós Perényi, Zoltán Rácz, Ferenc Rados, Béla Simon, András Szőllősy, László Vidovszky and László Tihanyi. The association decided to support the UMZE Ensemble, which had been established eight years earlier on the initiative of Zoltán Rácz, artistic director of the Amadinda Percussion Group, and music historian András Wilheim, and they have financed the ensemble’s concerts ever since. The current president of the association is composer Balázs Horváth, while the vice-presidents are László Tihanyi and Béla Simon. Forte Company Forte Company was founded by director and choreographer Csaba Horváth in 2005. The company, made up of actors is experimenting with the creation of a formal idiom that is little known in Hungary. They seek to create a new homogeneous language that relies on bodies, sounds, dance, music and texts. This new take on physical theatre attempts to bring a new approach to storytelling, situations, scenes, stage time, playing space, the dramaturgy of effect, and elicits very exciting and original acting. In addition to dance, the sister arts also play an important role in the performances. Csaba Antal and Milorad Krstić bring their art of the stage set to the productions, and the composers who make a comparably significant contribution include Nils Petter Molvær, Mihály Dresch, Tamás Matkó, András Dés, Csaba Ökrös, Dániel Dobri and Marcell Dargay.

Csaba Horváth “We work and we seek. We try to take materials and roll them into one, often with the intention to create complexity. At other times, we go the other way, discarding means of expression and moving towards simplicity. It is natural in modern theatre for dance, words, music and visual art to form a unity. That’s what they call contemporary theatre. Dance itself is a visual art,” says Csaba Horváth. The director and choreographer was born in Veszprém, and was artistic director of the Central European Dance Theatre between 1999–2006. After graduating from the Academy of Dance, he was the soloist of the Honvéd Ensemble, before joining Tranzdanz and later Shaman Theatre. Even before earning his degree in choreography from the Academy of Drama and Film, he would create productions that were award winners at prestigious festivals in Hungary and abroad.
