Hálával tartoztok a levegőért, amelynek uraivá tett. Inni ad a folyókból és forrásokból, menedéket nyújt a hegyekben
2
Liszt utal Eduard Jakob von Steine rajzára is, melyet a kotta címlapjára is kinyomtattak. Bár a zenét hallgatva a két jelenet tökéletesen elképzelhető, mégis hiba lenne, ha e darabokban pusztán az ábrázolás realisztikus vonásaira figyelnénk fel, a Két legenda ugyanis inkább tűnik látomásnak, víziónak, hallucinációnak, egy sajátos meditatív, pszichés állapot zenei transzformációjának. Liszt Ferenc: Szent Erzsébet legendája – Bevezetés; Hosanna Az 1857–1862-ben komponált oratórium, a Szent Erzsébet legendájának ősbemutatója 1865-ben Pesten volt, a premieren Liszt Ferenc vezényelt. Mind a közönség, mind a kritika részéről őszinte lelkesedés övezte a művet. A darab három zenekari részletét Liszt átírta zongorára (Drei Stücke aus der heilige Elisabeth), az első szakaszt pedig (Bevezetés) orgonaverzióban is publikálta. A Szent Erzsébet legendájával nagyjából azonos időben készült el az Assisi Szent Ferenc Naphimnuszára komponált kantátájának (Cantico del sol di Francesco d’Assisi) első változata baritonszólóra, férfikórusra, zenekarra és orgonára. A művet élete utolsó éveiben részben átdolgozta, illetve elkészítette a darab zongoraátiratát is, a Naphimnusz egyik részletét pedig (ad libitum) harsonára és orgonára is kidolgozta (Hosannah). Liszt Ferenc: B-A-C-H prelúdium és fúga A B-A-C-H hangokból álló kromatikus motívum Bach óta a zeneirodalom egyik gyakran feldolgozott témaötlete. Liszt 1855-ben egyik tanítványának, Alexander Winterbergernek komponálta ezt a művét, melyben megidézi a nagy zeneszerző szellemét. A kompozíciót 1874-ben átdolgozta zongorára is. Johann Sebastian Bach: Prelude and Fugue in A minor, BWV 543 Bach was the organist at the court of the Duke of Weimar (1708–1713) when he wrote this piece, which has survived in the hands of several copyists. It was very popular already in the 19th century, being studied, played and transcribed by composers like Mendelssohn, Schumann, Brahms and Liszt. Johann Sebastian Bach – Ferenc Liszt: Ich hatte viel Bekümmernis A substantial part of Liszt’s works for organ are transcriptions. They not only served to disseminate the works widely, but also helped him to delve deeper in the technique of composing for the organ. Between 1860–1865, he transcribed several of Bach’s works, including the closing movement of Bach’s cantata for choir and orchestra, “Ich hatte viel Bekümmernis” (BWV 21). Ferenc Liszt: Two Legends – St Francis of Assisi Preaching to the Birds; St Francis of Paola Walking on the Wave In the early 13th century, in Assisi, Francis, who was born into a well-to-do family, obeyed an inner voice – or in today’s parlance, acted of his own accord – and chose to live in poverty, making it his mission to care for and comfort the poor. Over two centuries later, in Paola, a childless couple, advanced in age, prayed to St Francis of Assisi for the gift of a child. When their son was born, they named him Francis out of gratitude and respect. When he was fourteen, the family made a pilgrimage to Assisi. According to tradition, it was then that the young Francis decided to lead the life of a hermit. He became enlightened in his ascetic solitude, and was soon joined by disciples. Both saints were very important for Liszt, who evoked their figures and teachings in several of his works, and who himself became a legendary exemplar of selflessness. There is a long history to the artistic treatment of the lives of St Francis of Assisi and St Francis of Paola, because both were filled with wondrous events. Liszt chose an episode from each.

In the French preface to the 1866 edition, Liszt – as it was his wont – relates the stories that directly inspired the works, and cites a popular publication of the time (Fioretti di San Francesco – The Flower Garden of Saint Francis). “Much are you bound to God, birds, my sisters, and everywhere and always must you praise him for the free flight you everywhere have; for the double and triple covering; for the painted and decorated robe; for the food prepared without your labour; for the song taught you by the Creator; for your number multiplied by God’s blessing; for your seed preserved by God in the ark; for the clement air allotted to you. You neither sow nor reap, and God feeds you; and has given you rivers and springs to drink at, mountains and hills, rocks and wild goats for refuge, and high trees for nesting; and though you know neither how to spin nor to weave, He gives both you and your children all the garments you need. Whence much must the Creator love you, Who confers so many blessings. Therefore take care, my small bird sisters, never to be ungrateful, but always strive to praise God.” The second Legend takes its story from Giuseppe Miscimarra’s fictional biography of St Francis of Paola. When a greedy captain refused to take the moneyless travellers to Sicily for free, Francis and his companion crossed the Strait of Messina with dry feet. Liszt also refers to a drawing by Eduard Jakob von Steine, which was reproduced on the cover of the sheet music. Though it is easy to picture the two scenes while listening to the music, it would be a mistake to concentrate on the realistic traits of representation. More than anything, the Two Legends appear to be visions or hallucinations, the musical representation of a peculiar, meditative state. Ferenc Liszt: The Legend of St Elizabeth – Introduction; Hosannah Liszt composed the oratorio, The Legend of St Elizabeth between 1857–1862, and conducted it himself at the world premiere in Pest in 1865. The audience and the critics were equally enthusiastic. Liszt transcribed three orchestral sections for piano (Drei Stücke aus der heilige Elisabeth), and also published an organ version of the first passage (Introduction). At around the same time as he wrote The Legend of St Elizabeth, he produced the first version of a cantata based on St Francis of Assisi’s Canticle of the Sun (Cantico del sol di Francesco d’Assisi), for baritone, male choir, orchestra and organ. He revised the piece during his last years, and made a piano transcription. He also set to music a passage from the Canticle of the Sun (Hosannah) for trombone and organ (ad libitum).

Ferenc Liszt: B-A-C-H prelude and fugue The chromatic motif comprising the notes B flat, A, C and B, or, B-A-C-H in German notation, was frequently used in musical history. Composed in 1855 for a student, Alexander Winterberger, Liszt evokes with this piece the spirit of the great composer. In 1874 he made a version for the piano.
