Johann Sebastian Bach: Der Himmel lacht! Die Erde jubilieret, BWV 31

A kantáta Bach weimari szolgálatának idejében született, 1715 áprilisakor, húsvét vasárnapján adták elő. Szövege Salomon Franck Evangelisches Andachts-Opffer című versgyűjteményének részlete. A kantáta első szakasza (2–4. tétel) Jézus feltámadását és a bűneitől megszabadított embert ünnepli. Az 5. tételben a hívő ember lelki feltámadását, régi lelkiségének elhagyását sürgeti. A kantáta utolsó harmada a Krisztussal közös szenvedésre, a halál utáni sóvárgásra fut ki, melyben az ujjongó öröm és a misztikus halálvágy a lehető legtermészetesebb módon forr egybe. A kompozíció különleges jellegét többek között a gazdag hangszerelés és a költői képekben dúskáló szöveghez illeszkedő invenciózus bachi dallamvilág biztosítja.

Johann Sebastian Bach: Bleib bei uns, denn es will Abend werden, BWV 6 A húsvét második napjára, húsvéthétfőre komponált kantáta 1725-ben Lipcsében hangzott el első ízben.

A Kommt, eilet und laufet legkorábban 1725.

A Cappella Amsterdam vendégeként Bach Máté-passiójának előadásában vállalt szerepet.

Jonathan Hanley

Számos lemezfelvétele is megjelent. Fellép a Stile Antico énekegyüttes tagjaként, valamint közreműködik a Vox Luminis, a Constellation Choir, a Gabrieli Consort és a Tallis Scholars estjein.

Johann Sebastian Bach: Der Himmel lacht! Die Erde jubilieret, BWV 31 Bach wrote this cantata while serving in Weimar and it was performed in April 1715, on Easter Sunday. The text was taken from Salomon Franck’s collection of poems, Evangelisches Andachts-Opffer. The first section (movements 2–4) celebrates the resurrection of Jesus and man freed from his sins. Movement 5 urges the faithful to seek spiritual resurrection and abandon the old spirituality. The theme of the last third of the cantata is longing for death, for suffering in communion with Christ, as exultant joy and a mystical death wish combine in the most natural way possible. A rich orchestration and an inventive melodic material that complements the splendid poetic imagery of the lyrics make this a special composition.

Johann Sebastian Bach: Bleib bei uns, denn es will Abend werden, BWV 6 Composed for Easter Monday, this cantata was first performed in Leipzig in 1725. The librettist is unknown, but the text is closely related to the Gospel reading for the festival (Luke 24:13–18): ‘Now that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem. They were talking with each other about all these things that had happened. While they communed and reasoned together, Jesus Himself drew near and went with them. But their eyes were kept from recognizing Him. He said to them, “What kind of communication are you sharing with one another while you are walking and are sad?” One of them, named Cleopas, answered Him, “Are You the only foreigner in Jerusalem who does not know what has happened there in these days?”’

The influential Bach scholar Alfred Dürr has noted that Bach composed music of a very high order for this poetically uninteresting verse. Featuring a string section, two oboes and an oboe da caccia, the opening movement is impressively generous; the aria, Hochgelobter Gottessohn is strikingly vivid; and the way the second aria (Jesu, lass uns auf dich sehen) introduces its melody evokes the silhouette of the cross.

Johann Sebastian Bach: Easter Oratorio (Kommt, eilet und laufet), BWV 249

Kommt, eilet und laufet was first performed in Leipzig on 1 April 1725 (a day before the BWV 6 cantata, Bleib bei uns, denn es will Abend werden). ‘This work differs from all other pieces of church music by Bach,’ writes Alfred Dürr, ‘in that it is based on a sung plot rather than one narrated by an Evangelist. Peter (tenor) and John (bass) hasten to Jesus’s grave.

Mary, mother of James, and Mary Magdalene (soprano and alto) are already there, having discovered that their plan of anointing the body is in vain (no. 4) and that, instead of the intended spices, only the victor’s laurel wreath is appropriate (no. 5). Peter and John gather from Mary Magdalene that an angel has told them the good news of the Resurrection. Peter finds Jesus’s napkin and concludes – curiously enough – that his own death will be nothing more than a slumber now that he has evidence of Jesus’s Resurrection in his hands (no. 7). The two women now wish to see the Saviour again soon (no. 8), for without Him – so Mary Magdalene tells us in no. 9 – they feel “quite orphaned and distressed.” John calls for joy over Jesus’s Resurrection (no. 10), and finally all join together in singing a song of thanksgiving to the Lord (no. 11).’
