Bartók Béla: Román tánc zenekarra, Sz. 47a, BB 61 A Két román táncot (op. 8a) Bartók 1909–1910-ben írta zongorára, és az elsőt egy 1911. február 12-i koncertre dolgozta át zenekarra. A bemutató felettébb pozitív kritikái a táncot briliánsan hangszerelt, bizarr módon harmonizált, orgiasztikus zárású műként jellemzik. A mű első előadását a winterthuri Werner Reinhard nagylelkűsége tette lehetővé.

Igor Stravinsky: Tavaszi áldozat „Képzeletemben ünnepélyes pogány szertartás jelent meg: bölcs öregek, körben ülve, egy magát halálba táncoló leányt figyelve. Feláldozták, hogy kiengeszteljék a tavasz istenét.” Így emlékszik vissza Stravinsky arra a látomásra, mely a Tűzmadár komponálása közben váratlanul meglepte. Ebben a különös vízióban Gyagilev azonnal meglátta egy balett lehetőségét. Stravinsky 1913 tavaszára készült el
a teljes partitúrával, a májusi bemutató a 20. század egyik legnagyobb hírverést generáló produkciója volt, a mű koncertelőadásai pedig hamarosan óriási sikert arattak. Moszkvában Koussevitzky, Párizsban Monteux mutatta be.

Riccardo Chailly a Decca lemezkiadó exkluzív művésze immár több évtizede. A barokk kortól a nagy klasszikus szimfóniákon és operákon keresztül a kortárs zenéig sokféle stílusban és műfajban mozog otthonosan. Felvételeit rangos díjakkal ismerték el. A Teatro alla Scala zeneigazgatója, valamint a Filarmonica della Scala vezető karmestere, emellett 2016ban ő vette át Claudio Abbadótól a Lucerne Festival Orchestra zeneigazgatói posztját is.

Filarmonica della Scala Az együttest – Claudio Abbado ösztönzésére – a milánói Scala opera zenekarának muzsikusai hozták létre 1982-ben. A vendégkarmesterek listája is rendkívül imponáló, olyan világnagyságok szerepelnek rajta, mint Leonard Bernstein, Szemjon Bicskov, Myung-Whun Chung, James Conlon, Gustavo Dudamel, Eötvös Péter, Christoph Eschenbach, John Eliot Gardiner, Valerij Gergijev, Philippe Jordan, Zubin Mehta, Gianandrea Noseda, Seiji Ozawa, Antonio Pappano, Gennagyij Rozsgyesztvenszkij, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Giuseppe Sinopoli, Jurij Tyemirkanov és Franz Welser-Möst. A zenekar 2006-tól szorosabb együttműködési formában dolgozik Daniel Barenboimmal, Riccardo Chaillyval, Daniel Hardinggal, Daniele Gattival és Valerij Gergijevvel. A Filarmonica della Scala gyakran rendel új műveket, neves zeneszerzők – Giorgio Battistelli, Carlo Boccadoro, Azio Corghi, Luis de Pablo, Pascal Dusapin, Eötvös Péter, Ivan Fedele, Matteo Franceschini, Luca Francesconi, Salvatore Sciarrino, Giovanni Sollima és Fabio Vacchi – komponáltak a zenekar felkérésére.

Béla Bartók: Romanian Dance for Orchestra, Sz. 47a, BB 61 Bartók wrote the Two Romanian Dances between 1909–1910, for the piano, and went on to adapt the first for orchestra for the sake of a concert on 12 February, 1911. The reviews of the premiere were very appreciative, praising the brilliant orchestration of the piece, its bizarre harmonies and orgiastic closure. The first of the three parts keeps repeating a four-bar theme, which is itself composed of inner repetitions. To maintain interest, Bartók arranges the theme in numerous ways, and introduces sudden stops and tempo changes in the closing part. The middle section is more vocal in character, and more passionately toned than the mechanical dance music that surrounds it. Though inspired by Romanian folk music, said Bartók in a 1931 interview, the themes were in fact the composer’s own. Igor Stravinsky: The Soldier’s Tale – Suite Stravinsky lived in Switzerland during World War One. He did not have access to his earnings in Russia, and his Berlin publisher did not send him his royalties. He and Charles-Ferdinand Ramuz decided to write a musical play that did not require serious stage machinery, a large company or a large orchestra, and was consequently easy to learn and tour. This was the starting point for The Soldier’s Tale, which has four characters (narrator, devil, soldier, princess) and employs an orchestra of seven. Stravinsky later transformed the music into a suite, which started a career of its own in concert halls, independent of the libretto. The work was performed in accordance with the original concept only once, because the Spanish influenza pandemic broke out, making it impossible for the company to tour in Switzerland. Ramuz’s adaptation of a Russian folk tale is about a soldier striking a deal with the devil, who later realizes the price to be paid for the happiness offered by the devil is too high. The music comments on the story ironically, sometimes almost cynically. The forms run the gamut from tango, waltz and ragtime to Protestant chorales and marches. The first performance was made possible by the generosity of Werner Reinhard from Winterthur. Igor Stravinsky: The Rite of Spring “I saw in my imagination a solemn pagan rite: sage elders, seated in a circle, watching a young girl dance herself to death. They were sacrificing her to propitiate the god of Spring.” This was how Stravinsky recalled the sudden vision he had while composing The

Firebird. For Diaghilev, the same vision was replete with the possibility of a ballet. Stravinsky completed the score by the spring of 1913, and the May premiere was one of the most widely discussed performances of the 20th century. The concert versions of the work were wildly popular; it was conducted by Koussevitzky in Moscow, and by Monteux in Paris. Long after the work was finished, Stravinsky was asked about experience that informed The Rite of Spring, and said what he loved most about his homeland was “the violent Russian spring that seemed to begin in an hour and was like the whole earth cracking. That was the most wonderful event of every year of my childhood.”
