Dear Munson Community,

Since opening its doors to the public in 1936, Munson has remained a cultural cornerstone of the Mohawk Valley. Over the 90 years since, we've evolved tremendously through programming and physical structures. We’ve grown from two family homes, a carriage shed, and stables to a campus of 24 buildings in diverse architectural styles that house galleries, an auditorium, modern studios, classrooms, collections, and offices. Our success isn't measured, however, by campus growth or structures but by the experiences and memories we create within.

In addition to a tremendous annual economic and educational impact, cultural organizations move people in unmeasurable ways—the moment someone pauses before a painting, the confidence a student gains in the studio, the conversation sparked over dinner after a concert or program. These intangible moments document success—they spark imagination, connection, creativity, critical thinking, and so much more.

Each day, we strive to create these moments across campus and generate the best possible visitor experiences. To enhance our visitor engagement and help us reach the broadest possible audience, we conducted a campus-wide study in 2023 and generated a Munson Campus Master Plan. You’ve seen some of its success already in the transformed Genesee Street landscape. We are now laying the groundwork for the next phase of the Master Plan: interior improvements to the Museum of Art. These plans honor our historically significant building, respecting its beautiful details while enhancing the visitor experience and making your Museum visit more enjoyable.

Intrigued? I hope so! In the months to come, I will have much more to share with you, and I know you will be as excited as we are.

In the meantime, after a very long winter, spring at Munson brings a rebirth of colorful, dynamic programs that will keep you busy and creating. From a Spring Weekend full of Art in Bloom and related events to new workshops and classes and a concert to warm your heart, come and enjoy!

None of what we do would be possible or meaningful without the support of our Members and donors. Thank you for your generosity and your partnership in creating those unmeasurable moments that matter most.

I look forward to seeing you at Munson soon.

Munson's programs are made possible, in part, by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.

Pratt Munson First-Year Exhibition

April 10 to May 6

Reception: Saturday, April 25, 3 to 5 p.m.

THE UTICA ART ASSOCIATION AND MUNSON'S ROOTS

The Museum of Art will soon reinstall its collection of American art made before 1920. It’s an exciting moment to feature new acquisitions and research as well as a time to consider our history. Individuals like Edward Wales Root and Helen Munson Williams left indelible marks on the collection and city, but an early local organization, the Utica Art Association (UAA), was also key to that effort.

In the mid-1800s, substantial wealth resulting from Utica’s prime location along the Erie Canal and the Industrial Revolution accumulated at an astounding pace. A group eager to boost Utica’s reputation and aware of the growing gap between the wealthy, educated classes and their larger community formed the UAA. The organization’s founding members, including Helen Munson Williams’s husband James Watson Williams, argued that regular exhibitions of fine art would benefit all.

Prominent and emerging artists brought their works to Utica to sell them to local collectors, including Williams, but entry tickets to UAA art fairs were affordable enough that much of the city attended as well. Newspapers in Chicago and New York

reported that it was a good market, highlighting high sale figures for the works by marquee names that hang in our galleries today. The Utica Art Association's legacy remains here at Munson, free to the public thanks to the family’s generosity.

Over the next several months, I will be meeting with community members—from seventh graders to retirees, people whose families have been here for generations to recent immigrants— in order to understand what our visitors would like to see and learn from our collection. I look forward to learning alongside Munson’s vibrant community as I think about what this collection says to visitors today. I’m grateful that the passion for art in Utica has long been a collective one.

DONOR SPOTLIGHT

ROSE HOSP

Rose Hosp is a familiar sight at Munson, often standing by the doors to welcome busloads of students and guide them through the Museum of Art. A longtime member of our docent team, Hosp has volunteered countless hours to deepen visitors’ understanding and appreciation of the remarkable works on display in Munson’s galleries.

We would be happy to content ourselves with Hosp’s generous gifts of time and expertise, but in the past year, she has taken two vital additional steps to help ensure Munson’s future: establishing a charitable gift annuity and making an outright capital contribution. Both gifts were inspired by her sister, Pam, who left funds to Rose through her estate.

Wishing to establish a legacy in Pam’s honor, Hosp began by creating a gift annuity that will provide income for her during her lifetime, with the remainder benefiting Munson. Just a few months later, she made another contribution—once more in Pam’s memory— this time to support a special project at Munson: the renovation of our Museum of Art. You will be hearing more about those renovations over the coming months.

Hosp’s generosity is a wonderful example of stewardship—honoring someone deeply important to her in ways that will benefit Munson visitors for generations to come. She has created a lasting legacy in Pam’s honor, inspired in part by the legacy of Munson’s founding family. We are profoundly grateful to Rose and look forward to seeing Pam’s legacy take shape through vital upgrades to visitor services at Munson.

If you would like to learn more about legacy giving or Munson’s capital needs, please contact John Murphy at 315-927-8523 or jdmurphy@munson.art.

BUILDING MOMENTUM

This winter, Munson received two major capital grants from New York State totaling $1.3 million to support transformative updates to our Museum of Art building. These awards build upon a $1 million grant from the New York State Council on the Arts awarded last spring. Together with private commitments, they lend tremendous momentum to a series of visitor-centered improvements we hope to begin this summer. These updates will strengthen the Museum experience while honoring the architectural and artistic legacy that defines Munson.

We look forward to sharing more details about this exciting project, and others, in the months ahead. In the meantime, we continue to seek additional support through individual donors, foundations, and other grantors.

For more information, contact John Murphy at jdmurphy@munson.art or 315-927-8523. We would be delighted to count you as an early supporter to the project!

TWO PRESTIGIOUS FOUNDATION AWARDS

Munson is honored and grateful to have received prestigious awards from the Terra Foundation and the Henry Luce Foundation. Securing both of these significant grants in a single year is an extraordinary achievement in the field.

Munson was awarded $75,000 from the Terra Foundation for American Art to plan a major exhibition co-organized with the National Gallery of Canada dedicated to celebrated 19th-century artist Robert Duncanson and inspired by Munson’s recent acquisition, The Vale of Kashmir, a momentous addition to our Collection.

We also welcomed Shiori Oki, our first Luce Foundation Fellow, supported through a $75,000 grant from the Henry Luce Foundation. Oki is working closely with Associate Curator Elizabeth Welch to reimagine and reinstall the Museum’s 19th-century galleries of American art.

“The funds from the Luce Foundation have allowed us to hire a wonderful curatorial fellow whose passion for community curatorial practice and fantastic project management skills have already made a huge difference,” says Welch. “Shiori and I are deep in the planning stages for an installation later this year.”

With visionary support from our funding partners and the continued engagement of our Members, the Museum of Art is entering a vibrant period of growth.
