Holiday Advice
Summer Holiday Checklist! ABTA – The Travel Association shares tips for families going on holiday this summer – from prep at home to when you’re away, to help you have a smooth and fun filled trip with your children or grandchildren
Before you go
Take the kids to swimming lessons, so they are confident in the water before you go away
Get some headphones designed particularly for children and let them get used to these before the trip
Organise your documents: print your travel insurance policy and leave the details with a friend or family member in case they need to contact the company on your behalf, check all passports are in date, check if you need any visas and have a doctors’ letter if you’re travelling with prescribed medication
If you are still looking to book a holiday – ABTA Members have lots of good value family breaks available and you’ll benefit from the ABTA offer of support, protection and expertise. Visit www.abta.com/find-a-member
Double check your airline’s luggage restrictions to make sure your bags aren’t too big or heavy
En route
If you’re flying, make sure your hand luggage has all of the essentials for the journey e.g. toys, toiletries, chargers medicines, travel documents, tickets and valuables
heck the foreign office’s travel advice for the C latest updates about your destination. Visit www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice 2
Keep your kids comfy – dress them in layers of soft, roomy clothing so they can adapt easily to temperature changes. Also take a snuggly toy that can double up as a pillow if needed
Bring snacks for the journey, and put them in collapsible food storage containers to save room in your bag once they’ve been eaten
If you’re flying, find out if there is a play area in the airport. Most major airports have a dedicated kids zone where there are toys/soft play so they can have fun while you wait
On holiday
Keep your travel insurance policy number and insurance phone number on you when out and about, so you’re prepared if anything happens If you want to have dinner or an evening out without the kids, check with your hotel how far in advance you need to book childcare
Take care to supervise children when they are on balconies, be mindful of gaps and keep furniture away from the railings
Confused about what Brexit means for your holiday?
imilarly, keep an eye on children when you’re S at the pool or beach - even when lifeguards are available. Be particularly aware at the beach: check warning flags and signage, ask locally if there are any known dangerous currents or dangers caused by the tides and avoid swimming in these areas, and learn how to spot a riptide
Holidaymakers have had reassurances from both the EU and the UK that, deal or no-deal flights will continue to operate between the UK and EU and you won’t need a visa. Further advice is available via www.abta.com/Brexit

Sun Care
Ensuring a Sun Safe Summer‌ By national melanoma and skin cancer charity, Skcin Young skin is very delicate and easily damaged by the sun and whilst some sun is definitely good for us, over-exposure to UVR (ultraviolet radiation) is a serious health risk and the primary cause of the UK’s most common and fastest rising cancer.
from a young age. Education, good practice and good role modelling are key to creating good habits that will last a lifetime and in ensuring a sun safe, skin cancer free future. When UV levels reach 3 or above, Skcin recommend five simple steps to sun safety. These recommendations not only apply to babies, children and toddlers, but to the whole family!
D
1. SLIP on clothing to keep skin covered
amage from UVR is cumulative and irreparable. We experience about one quarter of our total lifetime exposure to sun before we are 18 and studies have shown that just one severe sunburn in childhood or adolescence can double the risk of developing melanoma in later life. Making sure our little sunbeams are protected when outdoors is just one element to combating the soaring rates of skin cancer in the UK. Further crucial work can be done by parents / carers and those responsible for looking after our children, like nurseries and primary school settings, to educate children by embedding key messaging
Clothing can be one of the most effective barriers between our skin and the sun. Clothing should cover as much skin as possible.
Always keep shoulders covered, they can easily burn. A closer weave fabric will provide better protection.
A high UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) rated fabric provides best protection. Use UV protective sun suits, particularly when abroad. 4
2. SLOP on sunscreen to all exposed skin
Use a minimum SPF 30 (ideally SPF 50) sunscreen.
Ensure it is broad-spectrum, to provide both UVA and UVB protection - ideally UVA rated 5 or 4 star. Apply liberally, ensuring good coverage.
Don’t forget shoulders, ears, nose, cheeks and feet. Apply 20 minutes before children go outdoors. Reapply AT LEAST every 2 hours.
Reapply immediately after swimming / towelling.
5. SHADE from the sun when possible
Shade can provide a good barrier from UV rays.
3. SLAP on a broad brimmed hat
Children should wear a wide brimmed hat to shade the face, neck, ears and cheeks.
Seek shade whenever possible, particularly at the hottest times of the day between 11am and 3pm when UV penetration is strongest.
Legionnaire hats (with a flap that covers the neck and joins the front peak) or a hat with a minimum 7.5cm brim are the most effective – whilst baseball caps fail to shade the neck, ears and cheeks.
Keep toddlers and babies in the shade at all times. Never rely on shade alone, always combine with personal protection measures.
A close weave or UPF rated fabric provides best protection.
REMEMBER:
Reddening of the skin is a sign of sun damage.
4. SLIDE on sunglasses
Solar UV radiation can be damaging to the eyes, so where possible wear quality sunglasses.
You can burn in the UK - even when it’s cloudy.
Don’t forget to ensure your child is protected at nursery or school where they are often outdoors during peak UV hours!
Look for the European CE mark, which indicates a safe level of protection.
Those labelled with a high EPF (which ranges from 1-10) will provide best protection.
To find out more about the charity Skcin, who are dedicated to the prevention and early detection of skin cancer, visit: www.skcin.org
nsure they are close fitting and wrap around E to stop solar UVR entering the sides and top.
Weleda Edelweiss Sun Care The Weleda Edelweiss Sun Care range offers instant and the highest possible protection for the whole family whilst safeguarding skin health and the environment. Containing non-nano mineral UV filters and inspired by the edelweiss flower and how it protects itself from the extreme sun in the Swiss mountains, all products are 100% certified natural. Not only skin-friendly, the Edelweiss range is also environmentally-friendly, something which is especially important when bathing in the sea or natural pools. The non-nano UV Filters mean that the skin is left with a subtle white sheen, something that many parents find helpful when applying the creams to their children’s skin as it’s easy to spot areas that are not yet covered. With protection for baby, kids and adults, face or body, as well as after sun care it’s a complete range offering children effective sun care for the whole family. 5

Trees make the perfect shady place to shelter on a hot summer’s day, or to hide from the rain if the weather takes a turn. These steadfast companions remain year after year, so why not choose a favourite and see if you and your children can find out all its secrets? Keep visiting all year round and you might see it producing seeds or fruit, or discover animals making a home among its branches, or see it transform in autumn with spectacular fiery-coloured leaves.

#9 Eat a picnic in the wild
Whether you’re catching up with friends or spending time with family, there’s no simpler joy than sharing a picnic in the open air. To really make it an adventure, why not combine it with some other 50 things activities and use a map (#45) to find your way to your picnic spot at the top of a really big hill (#28)? That way you’ll get to enjoy the view as you eat.
Most reserves are free to visit, although occasionally there are parking charges. A full listing of places to visit including events this summer can be found at www.wildlifetrusts.org/familyfun
#37 Explore the wonders of a rockpool Credit: © National Trust Images, John Millar
If you’re able to escape to the seaside this summer, then why not see if you can find some rockpools to explore? There’s a whole miniature world to be discovered, from slimy seaweed to strange creatures. You’ll probably see mussels, limpets and small fishes – if you’re lucky you might even spot a starfish. Remember to keep an eye on the tide to make sure you don’t get stuck.

Stay Water Safe on Holiday this Summer
Family holidays are a great time to relax and have lots of fun at the swimming pool or beach. For maximum enjoyment it is also important for us all to be water safe, especially abroad, so we’ve teamed up with our friends over at Konfidence for their top water safety tips for parents. First and foremost, remember young children are attracted to water. Don’t take your eyes off them for even one second if they are near water. Supervision is the key to safety.
At the Beach – Safety Tips
Parents / Guardians should take turns to supervise children who are in the swimming pool.
Be aware of hazards – waves, tides, rip currents.
Familiarise yourself with the beach flags. On the continent a ‘Red for Danger’ or ‘Yellow for Caution’ and a ‘Green Safe to Swim’ flag system is used, but often a bit on the liberal side. It’s better to be safe and swim only when the ‘Green’ flag is showing.
At the Swimming Pool – Safety Tips
Don’t take lilos and other inflatables into the water – they can blow you out to sea and they may ‘pop’.
If the children’s pool is adjacent to the main pool, weak and non-swimmers should be deterred from changing pools or using the dividing walls / features to walk on.
At the beach, never play or swim near rocks, or near boats or other crafts.
Weak and non-swimmers should not go out of their depth – even when they are using floatation devices.
Always swim parallel to the shore rather than out to sea – and stay within your depth.
Do not run around the pool, in case the surface is slippery.
Make sure there is an adult with a child in the sea and someone on shore who knows you are swimming.
Always swim in pools patrolled by lifeguards.
Use a buoyancy aid or personal floatation device to be safe in and around the water. Konfidence say a big misconception is that parents with children who ‘can’ swim think they don’t need some form of buoyancy aid.
Never leave a child alone on the beach.
And finally, explain and reiterate the four water safety rules to children:
“Most children love to play for hours in or at the side the pool – but they get tired. A personal floatation device, such as our Original Konfidence Swim Jacket, gives them enough buoyancy and you the time to reach them if they are in difficulty – it only takes a few seconds for you to take your eye off them, and especially if you are supervising more one than child in the pool. Recipe
Cauliflower Couscous with Roast Veg & Turmeric Crea This vegtastic dish is bursting with colour and great ingredients! It’s really easy to make, too, making it a perfect summer barbecue side dish. It’s also delicious as a light lunch or snack.
Suitable for 10+ months
PREP: 10–30 minutes COOK: 25–30 minutes MAKES: 4 servings (as a side dish) 1/4 cauliflower
1 red (bell) pepper, deseeded and cut into bitesized pieces 1/2 aubergine (eggplant), cut into bite-sized pieces
2 courgettes (zucchini), cut into bite-sized pieces 1 sweet potato, peeled and cut into bite-sized pieces 1 red onion, roughly chopped 1 garlic clove
drizzle of vegetable oil or coconut oil
200ml coconut cream (or use single cream for a non-vegan alternative) 1 tsp turmeric
small handful of fresh coriander (cilantro) or herb of your choice, to serve (optional)
❹ To make a simple sauce, add the coconut
cream (or single cream if you prefer) and turmeric to the roasting tray and stir around to soak up the roasted vegetable flavours (a bit like making a gravy). Chop the roasted garlic clove and stir into the sauce. Heat the sauce through over the hob, on the barbecue or by placing back in the oven for a couple of minutes.
❶ Preheat the oven to 200°C/180°C fan/400°F/
gas mark 6. Break the cauliflower into florets, then blitz in a food processor to make ‘cauliflower couscous’. Set aside in a large bowl.
❷ Tip all the vegetables into a roasting tray. Bash
the garlic in its skin with the side of a knife and add to the roasting tray. Drizzle with a little oil and roast for 20–25 minutes (you could also cook this in a tray on the barbecue if you already have the barbecue lit).
Pour the sauce over the couscous and vegetables then chop the fresh coriander and sprinkle over the top. This can be eaten hot or cold and you can mash the vegetables a little if you want a slightly softer texture.

vegetables and stir into the bowl of raw cauli couscous. Remove the garlic clove and set aside. 20

Pork & Apple Burger Suitable for 12+ months
A great tasting burger for toddlers to enjoy. Delicious served in a mini bread roll. You can make these in advance and keep in the fridge, covered, for 1–2 days – they also freeze layered between sheets of baking parchment. Defrost thoroughly in the fridge before cooking.
❶ Put all the ingredients, except the oil, in a bowl
PREP: 10–30 minutes
and mix together – it’s best to do this with your hands as this will ensure the small ingredients get mixed into the pork.
COOK: 10–15 minutes MAKES: 4–6 burgers
❷ Divide the mixture evenly into 4 or 6 portions, depending on how many burgers you want to make. Roll each in your hand and flatten into small mini burgers.
250g minced pork 1/2 medium Bramley apple, peeled, cored and finely diced
❸ To cook the burgers, heat some olive oil in a
frying pan (skillet), add the burgers and fry over a medium heat for 5 minutes on each side. Make sure the burger is cooked through (not pink in the middle) but take care not to burn them!
1/2 onion, finely diced sprinkle of thyme and oregano (fresh or dried) sprinkle of freshly ground black pepper

Loving Books Together
Summer Reading
It’s been proven time and time again that children who enjoy books and reading are more likely to succeed at school and throughout their lives. Reading expands horizons and feeds imaginations.
T
he summer holidays provide the perfect environment to discover books, so even if you’re not an avid reader yourself, why not embark on the journey with your children together?
football fan? Encourage them to look at the sports pages of the newspaper or a football magazine with you. Do they love animals? Why not suggest they check out websites about different dog breeds with you?
Here are some top tips to get your kids fired up about fiction and fascinated by facts...
D on’t hurry – when you and your child sit down to read a book, try and forget the long list of things you need to get done and focus on helping your child to enjoy this time. These quiet times can be a great way to use books to talk about other issues and things that may be on your child’s mind. Don’t rush them.
T ry and set time aside to read with your children – it’s the perfect way to bond with them. You can share a cuddle and it’s often a time when children feel relaxed and able to open up about anything that’s worrying them.
B e positive – when you sit down to read with your child, give them praise for trying hard. Don’t criticise them when they make mistakes. Make sure that there are no other distractions – so turn off the TV and devote one on one attention to that child for as much time as you can give.
H aving said that, reading shouldn’t be restricted to bedtime, or sitting on the sofa at home either. Next time you’re out and about as a family, pack some books or magazines in a bag. You can pull these out when you’re waiting for a bus or taking a train journey. E ncourage your child to read when you’re doing activities such as shopping, ordering food from a menu or following road signs.
G ive them time to think – let your child make a guess or help them work out what the word is by breaking it up into sounds… resist the temptation to jump in and tell them the word.
O ne of the best ways to get children hooked on books is to find reading materials that are linked to their interests. Is your child a

young enough to be impressed by you (the teenage years are another story!) so this is the perfect opportunity to become a reading role model. If you can show your children that you get great personal enjoyment out of reading, chances are they will too.
I f your child is particularly keen on one book or a series of books let them read them over and over again – it’s great reading practice. Why don’t you encourage them to think about the characters in their favourite books and depending on their age, write a short story about or draw a picture of their favourite character.
Now for some ideas to help your child develop their literacy skills throughout the summer holidays…

From singing songs in the bath, to playing word games at mealtimes or spotting words on the walk to school, to reading a recipe to making a favourite cake – words are all around us and by helping your child to notice them and use them constantly, you will be helping their reading and literacy skills.

Reducing Waste
Slim your Bin How to reduce waste, save money – and have fun!
I
By Rachelle Strauss from Zero Waste Week
t can be worrying when you see pictures of plastic pollution and read about climate change. It feels overwhelming and such a big problem to deal with. Fortunately, there is something you can do which makes a big difference. Reducing your household waste might not sound like fun, but its surprisingly addictive and can have numerous benefits, such as saving you money, teaching you new skills and it’s good for the environment too. What’s more, the whole family can join in. With the summer holidays coming up, why not challenge yourselves to slim your bin and put the money you save towards a day trip or holiday?
Where is ‘away’?
When you throw something ‘away’, do you know where ‘away’ is? It’s a landfill site, an incinerator, the bottom of the ocean, an animal’s stomach, that piece of litter you see on the way home – it’s always somewhere else. Once you realise this, it really keeps your mind focused on what you’re trying to achieve.
Why bother?
The first thing to consider is WHY you want to reduce your waste. Do you want to save money, preserve resources for your children or stop arguments about who’s turn it is to put the bin out? Once you normalise something at home, younger children will automatically join in. But older children need to know their motivation too – do they love animals or get upset when they see litter?
Take an audit
Imagine you’re going on a diet. The first thing you’ll do is find out how much you weigh. It’s the same for your bin. Do your audit one of two ways – either live an ‘ordinary week’ and jot down everything you throw in the bin or, get your rubber gloves on, hold your nose and rummage in your bin before writing your list! If you can, put your rubbish on the scales and make a note of it. If you can’t, then just notice how many bags you’re throwing away. Now you’ve done the groundwork, it’s time to start reducing your waste. Pick one small challenge each day, focus on something for a week or take it slowly with a monthly goal. Here are some ideas to begin with; choose the ones most relevant to your family or make up your own: Recycle – Visit www.recyclenow.com, type in your postcode and find all the materials you can recycle at your kerbside. Now dust off your recycling containers, make bright colourful labels for them and start using them! 26
Waste Warriors Online Course – 50% discount Rachelle Strauss is offering a 50% discount code for Tumble Tots members to take the Waste Warriors Online Course. Each day for 31 days, you’ll get a short five-minute audio and simple challenge to do. By the end of the month you could have reduced your waste by up to 80% and be well on your way to saving £1,500 a year. Visit www.zerowasteweek.co.uk to find out more and to claim your 50% discount, use the code TumbleTots50. Valid until August 31st 2019.
Nappies – 187 billion dirty nappies are thrown away every year around the world. If you have a baby in nappies, consider switching to cloth. Some local authorities offer vouchers, trials or cashback.
or tumbling tomatoes in a hanging basket or sprouted seeds on a windowsill.
Compost – A wormery is a fascinating way for children to learn about composting and can be set up on a balcony, outside the back door or even under the kitchen sink.
Make money – Turning a walk into a litter pick is a great way to get children outdoors. Some supermarkets have ‘reverse vending machines’ where you can swap plastic bottles for loyalty points or vouchers.
CORN! – Once a week hold a ‘Clear Out Refrigerator Now’ meal. Grab everything that needs using up and serve a ‘buffet’. You might end up with some weird combinations, but also some family favourites.
Bake – Most confectionery comes in plastic wrapping. Search for favourite recipes for flapjacks, biscuits, cakes, muffins and even fruit leather to help reduce plastic packaging.
Plan – One third of food gets wasted. Hold a family meeting to share your favourite recipes and make a meal plan. Serve meals from large dishes, so everyone takes what they want, and leftovers can be stored safely to use as ingredients for another meal.
Earn your TV time – Did you know that recycling one tin can save enough energy to power a TV for three hours? Why not earn a family movie night by keeping a chart of how much you are recycling? Creative reuse – Look at items you might throw away or recycle and see if you can reuse them instead. Jam jars can be used to store crayons, make a bird feeder from a plastic bottle or make seedling pots from toilet roll inners. Check out Pinterest for ideas.
Swap – Organise a swap between friends for clothes, books, toys and DVDs. It’s a fantastic way to get things for free and declutter your own house without creating landfill.
Throughout your challenge, keep focusing on what you can do and celebrate the small wins. No change is too small: if everyone in Britain recycled just one tin can, that would be over 60 million tin cans being diverted from landfill!
Zero Waste Kit – Put together a Zero Waste kit for when you go out. Include refillable bottles, reusable bags, spork, reusable straw, napkins and other things that can replace disposable items.
Rainy day crafts – A rainy afternoon is the perfect opportunity to make a stash of cards and gifts to give throughout the year. You can make all sorts of things from bath bombs to beeswax wraps to simple stuffed toys.
Grow your own – Growing your own food reduces waste because you can pick just the amount you need. You don’t need a lot of space either! Try salad leaves in a window box, strawberries 27
Safety First
Family lives today: where’s the harm?
Three children die every week and over 2,000 are admitted to hospital because of serious accidents. Family life today is more complex than it’s ever been and often the very things that help make life more convenient for us as adults bring new risks to children. Button batteries, particularly lithium coin cell batteries, can be deadly if they are swallowed and get stuck in the throat. The reaction in the child’s throat can kill in less than two hours. Button batteries power so many essential products in the home like car key fobs, slim remotes, kitchen and bathroom scales, children’s thermometers and more.
Spare and old batteries are often the culprits too. The simplest way to reduce the risk is to store them out of children’s reach. Check the compartment of appliances with lithium coin cell batteries to make sure they are secure and don’t let children play with them. Cot bumpers can cause suffocation if a baby’s head becomes trapped between them and the mattress – the safest way for your baby to sleep is on a plain mattress free of toys, bumpers or bedding. Nappy sacks are particularly dangerous for babies as their flimsy nature means they can easily cause suffocation. If a small baby gets one in their hand and puts their hand to their mouth, they are not able to pull it away. Never store them under the cot mattress. 29

Bath seats are not safety devices. They are not intended for babies to be left in, even for a moment, due to the risk of toppling forwards and causing drowning. Always stay with your baby. Blind cords can act as a noose and cause strangulation in less than a minute. Fit blinds with safety breakers or make sure a cleat hook is fitted so that the cord can be tied safely away every time. Hair straighteners can burn little ones if they have been left on the floor or over a door handle to cool. They get as hot as an iron and take time to cool down. They also pose a fire risk. So, make sure they are stored in a heat-proof pouch out of reach of small children.
Washing capsules make our lives much easier but the powerful chemicals can damage children’s eyes and throats. Store them on a high shelf or in a cupboard with a safety lock and put them away as soon as you’ve used them. Look out for capsules that use a bitter safety ingredient like Bitrex. This makes them taste really nasty, so children are more likely to spit them out. Mobile phones are a known distraction for parents looking after their children, for older children as pedestrians and for drivers. The advice for parents is to try to limit screen time to times when you don’t need to be watching out for the children. This year’s Child Safety Week ran from 3rd to 9th June. Health
Staying Hydrated
By Dr Emma Derbyshire PhD, RNutr. Nutrition Consultant for the Natural Hydration Council
Establishing healthy hydration habits early is important for the health and well-being of young children and as they grow through life. Children form habits at a young age and are dependent on their caregivers to provide them with the best source of hydration at regular intervals. Hydration Recommendations
Top Tips for Hydrated Young Children
Water can come from fluids (drinks) and foods in the diet with the general advice that 80% should be derived from drinks and 20% from foods. European recommendations1 advise that fluid intakes should be 1.3 litres/day for children aged 2-3 years and 1.6 litres/day for children aged 4-8 years. Water is the healthiest way to hydrate and for pre-schoolers should be their primary source of fluid intake alongside milk. SACN recommend babies are exclusively breastfed until around 6 months of age and continue to be breastfed for at least the first year of life. Breastfed babies do not need additional drinks whilst they are exclusively breastfed, then after six months when weaning begins water or infant formula can also be offered as a drink. Bottle fed infants can be offered cooled boiled water if they require extra fluid, and water can also be offered during the weaning period. So, for younger children aged 2-3 years around 0.9 litres/ day fluid should be provided through drinks and for older children aged 4-8 years they should be aiming for about 1.1 litres fluid from drinks. In terms of glasses and bearing in mind that a small cup/beaker is normally around 200 ml this would equate to about 4 to 5 glasses of fluid a day for younger children (aged 3 to 5 years).
Make sure children have some water to drink before they go to nursery, pre-school or out for the day. Always have water available at mealtimes as this is an important time during the day when children will get their daily fluid intake. Remind children to sip small amounts of water and often throughout the day. Make water the beverage of choice for youngsters as it is calorie and sugar free. Pack some snacks with a high water content such as cucumber, melon or plain yoghurts into their lunch box or your day bag. On hot days remind children to drink water often and add plenty of ice to young children’s drinks to make it easier to drink. 1. EFSA (2010) Scientific Opinion on Dietary Reference Values for water.
