Verbal Karma

Tooth Physiognomy Aggressiveness Release

This project is inspired by traditional Chinese beliefs that poor dental health results from verbal karma, where negative speech manifests physically. Many cultures impose punishments for verbal misconduct, highlighting the concern over the impact of words. However, is verbal aggression purely negative? Aggression is an inherent aspect of human life and one of our fundamental drives. In unsafe environments, the lack of rules can lead to uncertainty about the consequences of expressing aggression, stifling communication.

This project does not promote actual verbal aggression but provides a safe space to simulate the act of emotional release through four key modes: volume, bite force, content, and speech rate. These modes offer a controlled environment for individuals to vent their frustrations and express aggression in a way that doesn’t cause harm. By tapping into these behavioral patterns, the device allows players to engage in a virtual "verbal combat" that mirrors real-life emotional outbursts but without the negative consequences of actual confrontation. In contrast, sports arenas offer a framework where aggression is safely channeled and managed. This project functions similarly, transforming emotional tension into an opportunity for personal growth. Players can release their pent-up emotions constructively, turning what would be harmful verbal outbursts into an outlet for emotional release and self-reflection. The experience enhances understanding of emotional interactions while providing a tool to navigate and manage feelings responsibly, ultimately transforming aggression into vitality.

History of Facts

Fluorine is a key element in our teeth and bones. The earliest known teeth are simple, point-like structures without enamel, found in acanthodians, shark-like fish.

Early mammals like *Multituberculata* were the first to have columnar enamel structures.

"Touma's child," a Southern Ape, has teeth development similar to modern humans. After fire use, tooth quantity and size decreased compared to similarly sized primates. A prehistoric Italian skeleton shows dental surgery. Agricultural diets with high carbohydrates increased tooth issues and cavities in humans. An ancient dental surgery discovered in Pakistan used flint drill bits.

In the Middle Ages to early modern times, doctors considered manual labor shameful and taboo, so most refused to treat teeth. Tooth extraction was left to quacks and even blacksmiths, who used their iron tongs for the task.

By his early 40s, Louis XIV had lost most of his teeth. Pierre Fauchard, the father of modern dentistry, wrote "The Surgeon Dentist." Anesthesia technology finally emerged, greatly transforming dentistry.

After the 1874 sugar tax reduction in Britain, cavity rates tripled for adults and increased fivefold for children.

In St. Louis, nuclear testing prompted a "baby teeth study," revealing that children with teeth erupted after 1953 had eight times the strontium-90 levels.

History of Ideas

Buddha's dental features include four white incisors symbolizing wisdom evenly spaced teeth representing good deeds that promote harmony, and forty teeth reflecting the avoidance of harmful speech emitting a pure fragrance that helps beings eliminate negative speech and brings joy

Traditional Chinese medicine believes that wisdom teeth symbolize wisdom because "teeth are the surplus of bones," "kidneys govern bones," and "kidneys govern intelligence."

A widely circulated belief originating in the Middle East held that toothaches were caused by an evil worm.

In Christian art, Saint Apollonia is depicted with teeth and pliers, reflecting her martyrdom by tooth extraction. This association makes her the patron saint of dentists and a symbol of dentistry.

In ancient Japan, black could not be tainted by other colors and symbolized chastity thus, blackened teeth became a symbol of married women.

In ancient Southeast Asia, blackened teeth were seen as beautiful. Lacking toothpaste and toothbrushes, and due to the tropical habit of chewing betel nut, this practice symbolizedtion

‘Ma Yi Shen Xiang’ is an ancient Chinese text systematically discussing human appearance. It suggests that a person's face reflects their past life's morals and by understanding facial features, one can predict life's fortunes and misfortunes.

Teeth in Physiognomy

The teeth themselves represent how well a person expresses themselves verbally, and verbal expression also reflects a person's reputation. Having good teeth, in a karmic sense, signifies good credit for the person, who often speaks kindly and positively.

Essence: Is Aggression a Negative?

Sigmund Freud: "Aggression" is one of the fundamental drives of humans. We often think of aggression as a negative emotion, but in reality, it is a very common force that accompanies the true unfolding of a person's vitality. It is best for a person to be both powerful and able to properly manage their anger.’

Aggressiveness can easily be equated with disruptive behavior if one of the Self, Object and Relationship is destroyed, the living energy in it is transformed into dead energy, which is disruptive; whereas, if it can be withstood and transformed, aggressiveness can be transformed into a strong life-force, which also increases the toughness of the Self, Object or Relationship.

Safe Aggressiveness: The Arena

Aggression and violent behaviour are seen as part of the game in many sports.

For many participants aggression is one of the main motivations for engaging in these sporting activities.

Motivations

This satisfaction comes not only from physical success, but also from the feeling of victory over an opponent.

Psychological Rewards Permissible Aggressiveness

The consequences of expressing aggression are invisible without rules.

So aggression cannot be freely expressed.

In sport human aggression is safely released.

Aggressive behaviour in athletics is governed by the rules and to some extent controlled by the referee

Showing teeth is a common sign of aggression in the animal world.

Children show more aggressive behaviour when eating bone-in chicken than eating boneless chicken.

In ancient Greek mythology, warriors grew out of clay planted with dragon's teeth.

Gritting your teeth is a way to ward off demons. People grind their teeth in their sleep to keep demons away from them.

In Conrad's book, teeth are the element that represents wildness: they are the fangs of a predator’

These feelings can increase an athlete's commitment to the game and desire to win.

The heartbeat balloon module inflates based on emotional changes. When a player's heart rate increases, the balloon expands, symbolizing heightened emotions; when the heart rate decreases, the balloon slowly deflates, reflecting inner calm. This dynamic change not only showcases emotional fluctuations but also enhances interactivity in the game.

Emo-Balloon Recognition Emo-Weapon Design Arena Design

The balloon's design is inspired by the four personality traits of ancient Greece: the circle represents sanguine, the triangle embodies choleric, the square symbolizes phlegmatic, and the star signifies melancholic. As a unique piece of jewelry, the balloon not only carries personality but also symbolizes the richness and variability of emotions in daily wear,.

Emo-Balloon Ornament

The Emotion Canvas captures emotional data such as volume, bite force, and speech rate during interactions. It dynamically translates these inputs into a visual design, reflecting the intensity and nuances of the players' emotions. This unique visualization symbolizes the emotional exchange throughout the experience.

The Emotion Badge transforms data like volume, speech rate, and bite force into a unique symbol of emotional interaction and shared experiences.

By using these interactive modes, players are able to release emotions in a safe environment, avoiding verbal harm while exploring ways to express feelings. The device provides an outlet for emotional release, transforming aggression into the release of emotions and self-reflection.

The experience begins with the user removing their emotional jewelry and installing it onto the device. Next, they select their output mode from four wearable devices, each representing a different form of emotional release. The battle begins as both players engage in the interactive experience, with emotions intensifying, causing the balloons to inflate. As the tension rises, one player's balloon bursts, signaling the end of the game. At that moment, a burst of calming fragrance and celebratory fragments are released, symbolizing the release of built-up emotion.

THE SILENT DIALOGUE OF LIANGZHU

This project draws inspiration from Liangzhu culture, combining the symbolic meanings of ancient jade artifacts with modern interactive experiences to explore new expressions of traditional heritage in the digital era. As vital carriers of rituals and beliefs, Liangzhu jade artifacts embody profound understandings of nature, life cycles, and social order. The design focuses on five representative artifacts—jade huang, jade cong, pottery ding, cone-shaped jade, and crown ornament—corresponding to the themes of birth, dwelling, abundance, freedom, and rest, enriched with iconic motifs such as flying birds,

patterns, and divine emblems. By integrating AR and gesture recognition technology, the virtual jewelry achieves dynamic visual effects and interactive responses to user movements, simulating the flow of life and the circulation of energy.

Only A Zephyr That May Blow

“Only a zephyr that may blow” is an innovative project that combines environmental awareness with ecological restoration. Discarded seeds are given a new purpose, carefully processed and woven with agricultural waste to create the fabric of kites. Specifically seeds that are typically discarded, thus reducing waste and promoting the use of renewable resources. The seeds are carefully selected for their environmental impact, ensuring they are biodegradable and non-invasive to local ecosystems. By incorporating these seeds into the kite’s design, the project challenges traditional kite-making methods and introduces a new perspective on how materials can be sourced sustainably. As the kites take flight and dance with the wind, the seeds are scattered across the land once the strings are cut, beginning their journey of restoration. These seeds enrich the soil, help vegetation thrive, and even provide food for wildlife.

This project also serves as an exploration of the cultural significance of kites, using them as a medium for storytelling. Each kite is a symbol of the wind, freedom, and renewal, with the seeds representing the potential for growth and regeneration. Each kite carries a promise to the environment, linking human action to ecological recovery. In the moment the string is cut, the gentle breeze carries discarded seeds to a chance for renewal, letting them embrace the earth and awaken the cycle of life. Through this project, we aim to integrate the inherently spontaneous and liberating act of kite flying with ecological restoration, turning each flight into a meaningful connection between people and nature. Let the wind carry seeds to new life and sow hope for the earth’s future.

02 PEOPLE & ENVIRONMENT: KITES

Source of Inspiration: Kite Festivals Feedback From Kites

*The Kite Runner* vividly depicts Afghanistan's traditional kite-fighting festival. In this cultural event, kites are flown high into the sky, and through the competition and eventual cutting of strings, they drift away, becoming one with the vastness of nature. The journey from flying high to returning to nature evokes a sense of release and reconciliation, offering profound inspiration for exploring the relationship between humanity and the environment.

Positive: Application of Kites Negative: Pollution of Kite

Kites, as ancient and symbolic tools, are not only mediums for entertainment and competition but also serve valuable purposes in various fields. From traditional uses like communication and wind measurement to modern applications in environmental monitoring and scientific research, kites offer a unique bridge between humans and nature.

In 2018, the Gujarat Forest Department rescued 4,000 birds after mass kite flying during the Makar Sankranti Festival.

Kites, beyond entertainment, have made significant contributions to the scientific community, becoming a unique tool for exploring wind, meteorology, and ecology. Their flight reflecting humanity's enduring curiosity about the skies and the natural world.

The Tibet Autonomous Region Association for the Prohibition of White Pollution organized volunteers to clean up abandoned kite lines along the Lhasa River.

In many countries, large amounts of natural fibers produced in agricultural or industrial processes are discarded. Recycling waste fiber helps preserve natural resources while reducing waste and encouraging more environmentally friendly manufacturing.

Bast fibres are characterized by high stiffness, low elongation, and good tensile properties.

Leaf fibres have relatively high strength。

Fruit/seed fibres are extracted from the outer shell of fruits, these fibres are lightweight and tough.

Grass fibres uses water retting because the process is straightforward, easy to carry out and cheap.

Straw fibers are typically collected and stored in a bale and is used in diverse applications.

One innovative approach involves using them in a nonwoven material.

How might we combine kite events with eco-education to engage the public?

How might we change kite materials to avoid pollution caused by traditional kites?

How might we make the reuse of discarded crops a part of ecological restoration?

How might we make kite usage a medium for restoring the ecosystem with discarded seeds?

Cutting the kite’s string lets the wind carry discarded seeds to a chance for rebirth.

Birdie Tango

Birdie Tango is an immersive interaction system that explores the relationship between humans and birds through music, touch, and augmented reality (AR). In this system, the human body becomes not just the environment, but an instrument for the bird. The bird, small in size, forms a unique bond with its human companion, perceiving the human as not just an object, but as a musical space. When the bird flies onto the human's body, it interacts with various touchpoints—shoulders, arms, and hands—to trigger different musical notes. Each movement, whether a gentle peck or a flap of wings, creates a sound that adds to the ongoing musical composition. The human becomes the vessel that amplifies the bird’s natural behaviors into a shared musical experience. This dynamic interaction allows for an organic **co-performance**, where the bird’s instincts and the human’s actions create a unique, harmonious duet.

At the same time, the human wears AR glasses to play an interactive music game. The AR system guides both the human and bird through a shared musical experience, helping them co-create a musical piece. As the human moves and interacts, the AR glasses visually cue the bird to follow along, enabling the two to perform in sync. The AR glasses enhance the experience by providing visual cues and guidance, ensuring that both the human and the bird are engaged and entertained throughout the performance. In this way, Birdie Tango transforms the human body into a living soundscape, blurring the line between performer and instrument. The process fosters a profound connection between the human and bird, where both species create something beautiful together through music and play.
