As aresult, over amillion people were displaced and 400 of those individuals have come to the Washington DC area. In the days following Hurricane Katrina, Isent an email to the brotherhood for some ideas on how Mu Lambda brothers can aid these new citizens of Washington DC. As you know, these individuals have many short-term and long-term needs. Upon their arrival to Washington DC, the local and national relief organizations were overwhelm with volunteers and donations to address their short-term needs. A//of the Washington DC Alpha chapters, led by our Area leadership, will partner to address some of their long-term needs. More information will be provided in the near future.

Community service Is one of the hallmarks of our great fraternity. Mu Lambda chapter has focused on tv/o specific community service projects in recent years: implementing Project Alpha at all Washington DC middle schools and providing scholarships via the Henry Arthur Callis Scholarship Fund and the Beautillion. During the past two years, Mu Lambda has conducted Project Alpha at seven middle schools across Washington DC. In January 1969, newly elected African American representatives of the 77th Congress joined six incumbents to form the "Democratic Select Committee. The Committee was renamed the Congressional Black Caucus and the CBC was born in 1971. Founding Members were Representatives Shirley Chisholm, William Clay, George Collins. John Conyers, Ronald Dellums, Charles Diggs, Augustus Hawkins. Ralph Metcalfe, Parren Mitchell, Robert Nix, Charles Rangel, Louis Stokes, and DC Delegate Walter Fauntroy. Their goals were to positively in fluence the course of events pertinent to African Americans and others of similar experience and situation, and to achieve greater equity for persons of African descent in the design and content of domestic and international programs and services. While the CBC has been primarily focused on the concerns of African Americans, the Caucus has also been at the forefront of legislative campaigns for human and civil rights for all citizens.

As is always the case, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. had astrong presence at the 35 Annual Congressional Black caucus in Washington, DC last month. With the month of September being dominated with the poor governmental response to the catastrophic hurricane that blew through the Gulf states. It was automatic, the Congressional Black Caucus's decision to shift the focus of its annual legislative conference, being held here last month just weeks after Hurricane Katrina. Panels were pulled together on topics ranging from the storm's impact on children to rebuilding New Orleans. Poverty has always been at the core of the CBC's agenda. Now Katrina had blown back the curtain on an issue that the caucus had been talking about for decades.

The four-day conference did maintain its other schedule, too, its panels on building young political leadership, on grooming women leaders, on issues such as education and Social Security. And that social buzz, the celebrity sighting, the warm reunion-like spirit the weekend has become known for, was present too.
