October 1990 Washington, D.C. MU LAMBDA Chapter, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated

Message from the President

Greetings Brothers! Thanks for the wonderful show of enthusiasm at the September meeting. I greatly appreciate the spirit with which Brothers volunteered for Standing Committees and Iantici¬ pate that with an even bigger turn¬ out at the October meeting, we can finish staffing our committees to bring them all up to full strength. While we had over 100 Brothers in attendance, Iwould like to see twice that number present at the October meeting.

Which reminds me! As you well know, our plans are to have 200 fi nancial Brothers on our chapter rolls for the 1990-91 Fraternal Year. It can be done! Believe it or not, we mail newslet¬ ters to nearly 300 Brothers every month. To inactive Brothers, Iof¬ fer the following challenge: We know that you are out there, we are interest^ in you, we spend our money to communicate with you, so step forward and pay some dues. We would like to start realiz¬ ing our financial-strength goal at the October meeting, and to com¬ plete this goal by the December (continued on page 3)

Feel the spirit! Join us at the October meeting for our annual reclamation, fellowship, and para¬ phernalia night. This meeting will be Mu Lambda’s opportunity to introduce to some an reacquaint others with the Alpha Phi Alpha experience in Metropolitan Washington, D.C.

Share this night of fellow¬ ship with an inactive Brother! Bring him along. Come out and reaffirm your commitment to “our renowned Alpha Phi Alpha and dear fraternal bond.” Don’t forget to wear your Alpha paraphernalia! Tuck in that spare tire and don your line sweater or T-shirt. Pull out that hat you wore on line! If

you have banners, photographs, paddles, or other memorabilia, bring them! Show off your treas¬ ures! Make us laugh! Make us cry! Help us feel the Alpha spirit again!

This year’s program will be a surprise; it promises to be the greatest evening of fellowship ever. It will be fi lled with fraternal fun, frolic, food, drink, and good conversation, as Mu Lambda takes time to re fl ect and rededicate itself to the ideals of our Jewels. Reactivate that old line Brother of

yours; special recognition will be given to those Brothers who bring inactive Brothers to the meeting.

The Archives Committee has been established to pre¬ serve the legacy and heritage of Mu Lambda Chapter. The committee endeavors to collect, archive, and dis¬ play, memorabilia for the enlightenment of all. Our new chairman is Brother Elmer D. Geathers. Brother Geathers needs 5other Brothers with interests in history, fine arts, graphic arts, etc. to assist him .He also plans to collect biographical information on the founders of Mu Lambda Chapter. To volunteer for the committee or to supply data on the chapter founders, contact Brother Geathers at 547-2625.

meeting with atypical Alpha cele¬ bration. Irealize that Brothers are not able to attend every meeting; we don’t expect that. Therefore, we are busy planning to sponsor enough activities, both social and otherwise, that will give Brothers ample opportunity for fraternizing, fellowshiping, and networking. You will see your dues at work for you.

1990-91 Dues

Although the 1990-91 budget and dues schedule has not been ap¬ proved, Brothers should come to the October meeting prepared to meet their financial obligation. The new dues schedule will most likely be about the same as In 1989-90. Dues for the 1989-90 fraternal year were $85 for life members and $160 for non-life members. (The $160 includes $75 for the National Grand Tax, which is pro-rated as follows for recently graduated Brothers: 1st year—$37.50; 2nd year—$56.00.1 Dues mav be mailed to Brother Benjamin J. Carson. Ill at 1417 Massachusetts Avenue S.E.. #2. Washington. D.C.. 20003. Remember to include your social security number on your check. Please take care of your fra¬ ternal obligations now. Our Financial Secretary, Ben Carson, has been instructed to work with each Brother in every way possible to make it easy to pay grand taxes and local dues within areasonable period of time. We would like for Mu Lambda to

be able to make astrong showing of fi nancial Brothers with the highest number of delegates at the 85th Anniversary (Convention in Baltimore next year. So Brothers, “Do the right thing!” Support your Fraternity, your Chapter, and your community. To send your dues by mail, see "1990-91 Dues" on this page.

Iwill be telling you more about our successes as the year goes by, and Standing Committee Chairmen will be sharing more de¬ tails of plans and activities with you in the future. We have also created several special Ad Hoc Committees. Each will bring aspe-

cial program to us during the year. We already have a“Ministers' Group” chaired by Brother Jerry Hargrove, and a“Health Affairs Group” chaired by Brother Sylvester Booker. We will be forming other special interest groups very soon. Let us know of your special interests. Every Brother indeed possesses special interests and talents; we hope to form interest groups to accommo¬ date everyone.

October is traditionally our month for Reclamation and Fellowship. Come out to this meeting clad in your Alpha Paraphernalia; Don’t be ano show. Ilook forward to seeing you on Thursday, October 4at 7:00 P.M. sharp. Look, we have

delightful beverages until 7:30 P.M., and we let you slip out quietly for refills during the meet¬ ing. “... And the recollections slowly fade away ... !
