Greetings: ic corps trainees at Howard University sBlackburn Center on February 5.
Since our last meeting, we have initiate eleven new memberf* iuto the brotherhood. Affectionately called the Tenacious-11, these brothers bring new talent, energy and enthusiasm to Mu Lambda and
Alpha Phi Alpha. It is our expecta¬ tion of the Tenacious-11 that they seize the mantle from their predecessors-S5mergism 9(Spring 93)-in developing the (Dommunity Service CJommittee, under the direction of Bro. James Greer. (We are also anticipating their contribution to the development of apublic rela¬ tions strategy Ithink you know who you are!)
we
Speaking of community service, continue to congratulate Bro. James Greer for his tireless devo¬ tion to the development and imple¬ mentation of this important element of our chapter. We are exposing young African American men to dif¬ ferent philosophies through Pearson, tutoring via Bro. Wayne Williams, or through contemporary national leaders via Bro. Kevin Norton. We also acknowledge Bro. Gregory Johnson who continues to fi nd time to devote to GTHS/GTC
Since the inception of the Community Service Committee in 1992, it was the vision of Bros. /\lan Wiley and myself that the Committee sprogram grow at a steady pace so that ten years from now, Mu Lambda is unmistakingly our fraternity attended areception the African American Greek-letter honoring 18 South African diplomatchapter walking the walk, and talk¬ ing the t-fllk. As part of that vision, we believe that we would soon out¬ grow the concept of mere committee action via Mu Lambda. Instead, through progress and growth, we anticipate that the creation of a Foundation for Community Service would greatly enhance our ability to raise necessary funds to provide more worthwhile and long-range

It is the Foundation concept that will again address at the March meeting. You will hear may argu¬ ments for and against the develop¬ ment of athird Mu Lambda corpora¬ tion. In case, Iask that you think along the long-range plana that We anticipate for Mu Lambda.
Here are afew ideas for the Foundation: (1) Black College Tour, which nan take DC students to his¬ torically black colleges throughout the Leadership Development Institute, which is operated by Mu Lambda under the auspices of the Eastern Region, could be expanded and insti¬ tutionalized so that it receives ade¬ quate local and Mu Lambda sup¬ port; (3) the development of an Alpha-Mu Lambda Academy that will expose DC students who have no connection to college life to 4-6 weeks of intense College prepara¬ tion on the campus of Howard University; (4) the development of
peoples.
Also appearing on the program was Mu Lambda sDr. Horace G. Dawson, Jr. who was instrumental in developing the training program that involved South African civil servants and students from previ¬ ously disadvantaged racial groups and political parties.

The program followed arequest from Nelson Mandela to prepare an inclusive foreign sendee representa¬ tive of the incoming majority rule government and was ajoint effort of Howard and (^orgetown universi¬ ties designed to train such diplo¬ mats. Mandela is expected to become president of the New South Africa following elections on April 27 of this year.

This aggressive approach cost money! This aggressive approach requires ahuman resources and technical know-how! We believe that the development of this Foundation would allow us, in time, to hire full/part-time interns and appropriate expert to develop what will become ameaningful and achievable program. It is that vision of community service that I envisioned athe beginning of my tenure as your President that Iask you to consider and adopt at the third discussion of the Foundation.
