DECEMBER 201 9
My prayer is that each of you enjoyed the bounties of good food, good fortune and love of family during Thanksgiving. It took many decades, but Ihave finally learned not to gorge during my meal, which makes for amore
enjoyable weekend and saves on alterations.
Like you 1am saddened and appalled by the continuing saga of blacks killed by white police officers. The very people entrusted with the duty and authorities to keep you safe are betraying you in the most heinous ways. What is the answer? How does one explain to children (and grandchildren) the reasons for one man's inhumanity to another man?
Iam of the opinion that the confluence of three focuses can amelio¬ rate the disastrous actions we witness today. 1) Education, 2) employ¬ ment and 3) elections are my suggested buzzwords for today. Without seizing the benefits afforded by agood education none of the brothers would be where we are today. Employment in aposition that allows decent salaries and upward mobility is often apleasant byproduct of that good education. Elections are aviable way of maintaining the gains resulting from education and employment It also allows citizens to better control the hiring and retention of qualified public servants such as police officers. Judges, prosecutors, etc.
Three years ago Iconvened abranding committee for Mu Lambda. The charge was to identify an area or areas that the chapter would focus and address in true Alpha fashion. Presently we have myriad efforts to address multiple problem areas -teen pregnancy, assisting the elderly, feeding the hungry, etc. While we can continue to perform/support the programs mandated by the Fraternity, should we as a chapter concentrate our work on fewer efforts ensuring they are accomplished well -accomplished in Mu Lambda fashion? Similar to keeping our word when promises are made or putting forth the best effort possible, there should never be aquestion of what Mu Lambda stands for or what one can expect when Mu Lambda support is involved, i.e. the Mu Lambda way!
Accordingly, Isuggest we dialogue on how best to focus on encourag¬ ing minority youth, particularly males, to complete high school and go to at least abachelor's degree. It should be more than acoinci¬ dence that obtaining agood education leads to employment in afield that is legal and capable of supporting one in at least middle class fashion. Major efforts should be made to encourage all to cast ballots in every election for candidates that agree to support laws that protect gains so painfully obtained during the civil rights era.
Please consider the above suggestions and come to Thursday's meet¬ ing to add your opinion to the synergism of the collective membership. What should be our goals? What should we do differently to accom-
plish those goals? How can we influence our elected officials to respect our needs in the laws they make? How do we hold them accountable for their actions or inactions?
While working at the State Department iwas constantly exposed to the difficulties of trying to change an individual's mind. Frankly, 1 could care less if somememoryone likes me or not, just don't impede my path to legal rights and privileges. Don't tell me Icannot reside in the house of my choosing because of my color. Don't pass alaw limiting my opportunity to register to vote to protect your hold on the electorate. Don't treat me as if 1am ?of aman!
Ilook forward to seeing you Thursday for our last meeting of 2015. If you haven't fulfilled your financial obligation, please bring your check or credit card. As you take advantage of the shopping bargains remember the less fortunate.
Happy holidays to you and yours!
