We all remember, before the daily news killings and the advent of MW, that when the clarion called in our neighborhood or community, we stood up, no matter how young or how small, and took our place in line to help others in catastrophe or financial need. It is the African American tradi¬ tion.
In lieu of the above, as mature African Americans who have had a successful career and life, we must re¬ member that we are the “first of all” and we must always try to reach out to ayoung brother whose life obstacles may be even greater than ours. We should give to our college brothers who work hard in the name of Alpha. Remember, as younger men, we have all had tough times when no matter how straight the endeavor, the road to attainment was crooked. The act of giving is atrue illustration that we are servants to all. It is the cement which bounds the fi'ame of fraternal brother¬ hood.
It was in this fraternal spirit that the brothers of Beta Chapter, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. originally nounced at the last meeting that they recently received an invitation from the South African Soweto Dance Theatre to participate in their summer work¬ shops to be held December 6-13 1994 in Johannesburg. It is not too late to give to this notable cause.

The college brothers at 0mlcron Omicron Chapter are very active in holding the torch high in the name of Alpha. The chapter has performed commu¬ nity service events such as con¬ ducting its September 14, 1994 bone marrow drive with which it ended testing the largest num¬ ber or registrants in the area. The brothers also work with the elderly at Delta Towers. In addi¬ tion, the chapter has begun to publish its own newsletter. Its recent campus activities in¬ cluded conducting an "Alpha Week” which sponsored semi¬ nars in starting your own busi¬ ness, black male and female re¬ lationships, and alecture on the
current concerns and past his¬ tory of the fraternity. The brothers of Omicron Omi¬ cron should be congratulated for spreading the spirit of Alpha on their campus and within the Washington, D.C. community.

The November elections have brought atide of change to the U.S. political landscape that may negatively impact American foreign policy in Africa and the third world.
With the capture of amajority in the U.S. House and Senate, the republicans, led by the new Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole, plan to put Senator Jesse Helms of North Carolina as Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee.
Jesse Helms’ conservative and racist past will not bode well to foster an expansion of the Clinton Administration’s human rights policies In Haiti, Rwanda, South Africa, Malawi, or Liberia.
Senator Heims has never shown much sensitivity to the needs of African-Americans.
Why should we expect him to have sensitivity to the needs of Africans?
Moreover, Senator Helms intends on reducing the amount of foreign aid that we pay out
cutting ax. This could potentially have adevastating impact on the African continent as it pushes toward the 21st century.
Also, the negative comments from Helms towards President Clinton in recent weeks can potentially stymie any meaningful dialogue between the President and Congress— effectively halting progress toward detente or the deployment of peacekeepers in many war troubled third world countries.
other countries. Approximately seventy-five percent of U.S. foreign aid goes to Israel and Egypt, and it will be hard to reduce that aid because it is well supported on Capitol Hill by lobbying groups. That leaves aid to Africa as one of the prime places for Helms to weld his aid
At this time, in the wake of the cold war, America must show leadership to lead nations into a new age of peace and prosperity into the 21st century. It is hard to see how aformer seg¬ regationist can carry out this mandate.
