oving into Manhood is the theme of Mu Lambda Foundation
Eight Annual Beautillion on Saturday, May3 at the Georgetown University Conference Center on Reservoir Road. We invite you to share in this evening of elegance celebrating our African-American youths. As we marvel about this moment in time for our Beaux, Iurge all Brothers in the Mighty House of Alpha and our friends to support the BEAUTILLION, and our efforts in developing these young men who will someday emerge as our leaders. Clearly Brothers, the need is urgent that we financially support the programs of our chapter. Our launching of the Beautillion Program is likened to seeds planted to produce aperennial f^ruit-community-minded youths who hunger for education and are willing to put forth the necessary effort to achieve their highest aspiration. In cultivating these youths, we are also providing community service and outreach with some of their endeavors. Ihope the fraternal spirit prevails and the Brotherhood supports the Beautillion by either buying tickets or making a contribution to the scholarship fund.
In this connection, I wish to point out that many activities of the Beautillion are relevant to our National Programs. The Fraternity’s National Programs are adopted by the organization’s governing body and mandated for implementation by all of the chapters. Three National Programs have been established which de fi ne the focus of Alpha’s activities. They are the following:
●AVoteless People Is a Hopeless People
● Project Alpha
● Go-to-High School, Go-to-College. The Beautillion fits perfectly within this framework of these activities. With these fraternal programs in mind. Brother Zollie Stevenson, Jr., our National Program Chairman, and the 2003 Eastern Region Alumni Brother of the Year, will lead adiscussion at our
May Meeting on the implementation and understanding of the National Programs.
In addition. May is the month in which the chapter selects its of fi cers for the next fraternal year. Aslate of candidates will be presented by the Nominating Committee and nominations may be made from the fl oor. Selection for vacancies on the Foundations and Scholarship Boards will also be made. Finally, Iwant to thank all of you for your support and expression of brotherhood in helping us make aGreat ChapterGRAND.

ach day, thousands of IAfrican American face a ^frighteningdilemma. They suffer from leukemia, aplastic anemia, or other life-threatening blood diseases. For many, their only chance for survival is a marrow or blood stem cell transplant.
These transplants require matching certain tissue traits of the donor and patient. Because these traits are inherited, a patient’s most likely match is another family member. Unfortunately, 70 percent cannot fi nd amatch with their own
families. They need an unrelated individual willing to donate healthy stem cells. Stem cells are immature cells that can develop into red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. The National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) created aregistry of potential donors. The tissue type is determined by testing asmall blood sample for Human Leukocyte Antigens (a genetic marker on the surface of the
blood cell). YourHLAis compared against the HLA belonging to people in need of a marrow or blood stem cell transplant.
Although it’s possible for an African American patient to match adonor from any racial or ethnic group, the most likely match is an African American. Since African Americans most likely will require amatch from another African American, it is critical to get as African
American as possible into the registry.
The NMDP created a national education and recruitment initiative called African Americans United for Life. The goal is to recruit more African Americans to become volunteer donors. By reaching the community through organizations like Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., African American volunteers have improved the likelihood of identifying amatch potential donor for African American
patients. The number of transplants performed for African American patients has nearly tripled since 1995. NMDP is one of the fraternity’s national partners.
About 7years ago. Mu Lambda Chapter sponsored an education and awareness seminar at the Channel Inn. At this event, many Mu Lambda brothers (and guest) registered on the NMDP registry and many other brothers (and guest) learned about the National Marrow Donor Program. In the fall. Mu Lambda Chapter will partner with the Mu Lambda Foundation and the National Marrow Donor Program to sponsor another education and awareness seminar. Through the partnership of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and NMDP, Alphas have saved six lives. In the future, you will hear more about this Mu Lambda community service activity.
