Messagefrom the President

Thoughts of ahouse will be the focus of our inaugural 2003 fraternity meeting. The dedicatory statement, written by Brother Sydney Brown the “HOUSE OF ALPHA” continues to be the beacon for Mu Lambda Chapter in our objectives for a house. Brother James Speight and our housing task force will discuss and provide perspectives on the status of our ALPHA HOUSE as well as provide dialogue on where we will be heading in the new year. Brothers, Iknow that your APHI Aspirit is alive and soaring when thoughts of the fraternity relates to bygone times, let us have your thoughts in aconstructive dialog regarding issues that affect the brotherhood in planning for the house.

As we enter the year 2003, new and familiar activities are on our calendar—Beaiitillion and its May 3Extravaganza, spring intake, and the reclamation/membership activity sponsored by Councilmember Vincent Orange at the Dream Club. With regard to member¬ ship, we must encourage our brotherhood to go that extra mile. Brothers we are primarily a chapter of seasoned members, each one of us must began to reach out and bring some one into the fold. Let us return to that logarithmic phase of our growth cycle. As part of the new members and reclamation activities—awards and recognition will be given to Brothers whose efforts result in the largest number of new members.

Reflecting on our Decem¬ ber activities, kudos are extended to James Robinson and George Anderson for undertaking and directing an excellent Founders’ Day Celebration. Thanks are also extended to the Brothers and the guests who participated in this celebration. (Located elsewhere in this newsletter are names of our Founders’ Day Program awards recipients.) Modestine Lowery, President of the Alpha Wives of Washington, and other Alpha Wives are congratulated for hosting afun filled and successful Christmas Party at Sergio’s Restaurant in Silver Spring, MD. This message also allows me again to express my appreciation to Lawrence Montgomery and Lamar Arnold, Co-Chairs for Mu Lambda 2002 Black and Gold Holiday Ball for the efforts that were spent in making the Ball successful. Heartfelt thanks are again extended to the beautiful group of Alpha Wives who were the prime movers in the Holiday Ball Silent Auction— Janette Harris, Ruth Robinson and Aretha Freeman. In the coming months, we will be looking for ways to increase our fund-raising efforts and should you have ideas, please let us know. In our December newsletter, it was announced that we would have the election of two officers, our vice-president and parliamentarian. Because of weather conditions on December 5and the low attendance, we agreed to postpone the election until the January meeting. Tn the spirit of Brotherhood, we wish for each of you ahappy and prosperous new year.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE JANUARY MEETING IS JANUARY 9, 2003.

Now that the Black and Gold is behind us. It is time to focus on the 2003

Beautillion. The 2002 Beautillion was asmashing success; we aim to repeat this with the 2003 Beautillion. We have acadre of 10 beaux. We are accepting more so if you know of other beaux please direct them to us. Tim Fitzgerald is the contact for all incoming beaux (301) 322-7057.

This year’s program will culminate with agala at the Georgetown Conference Center, Saturday, May 3, 2002 at 6:00 p.m.

The Beautillion continues to be Mu Lambda’s flagship public service program. For it truly embodies the spirit of our fraternity: manly deeds, scholarship, and service. As such the goal of the Beautillion is to provide the needed mentorship to promising black males in the surrounding community through leadership training and financial assistance that will aid in their college matriculation.

The Beautillion encompasses parts of the fraternity’s national programs: Project Alpha and Go-To-HighGo-To-College. Every bit of our effort needs to be put forward to ensure the quality and utility of this initiative of ours.

The Beautillion committee has already staged several workshops. The focuses so far have been college prep,

being sexually responsible, fundraising, preparing the souvenir journal, and community service. The remaining workshops are listed on page 4. Several workshops are to be determined. If you have an expertise in or know of someone who has an expertise in time management or credit/financial management, we need you to facilitate aworkshop. Please contact Kwame Ulmer (202) 5297858 or me (301) 574-2079 for more information on facilitating these workshops. The next workshop will help those completing the FAFSA forms. We hope to see more brothers at the workshop.

We also need your help in .soliciting corporate sponsorships and the purchase of ads in the souvenir journal. We have set aminimum goal

of $2000 for corporate sponsorship. Of course more is always appreciated. Information about corporate sponsorships will be available at the January meeting.

Ifie *E?(^utive Message

Edwin F. Norwood, HI

Brothers, if you did not have the opportunity to attend the 71®‘ Annual Eastern Region Convention, you missed the chance to interact with the future leaders of our Fraternity, participate in the Fraternal debates of the day, and reflect on the accomplishments of the Eastern Region of our great fraternity. Ihad the opportunity to interact with the Brother Judge James R. Williams, General President, Bro. Charles Turnbull, and Governor of the U.S. Virgin Islands, along with our great leadership. Brother General President Harry E. Johnson, Sr. and Brother Darren Morton, Eastern Region Vice President. During our upcoming chapter meeting, the delegates will provide an oral report to summarize the convention. During the convention, I had the chance to reflect on the history of the leadership in our region. Mu Lambda has always served as aguiding force in Alpha East and the Fraternity as a whole. Brothers Walter Booker (1950 to 1953) and Leroy Lowery (2000 to 2001) both served as Eastern Region Vice President. Mu Lambda’s Brother Isham Baker served as Assistant Eastern Region Vice President, while astudent at Howard University. We all know about the Mu Lambda brothers who served as General President for 19 consecutive years. From 1932 to 1951 Brothers Charles Harris Wesley (14“’ General President), Rayford Wittingham Logan (15“" General President), and Belford Vance Lawson, Jr.

(16 General President) led Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity through many great challenges. As we approach our 100 Anniversary, what role will Mu Lambda play in the future of the Eastern Region and throughout the Fraternity? This is one of many questions that we need to continue to ask ourselves. Who are the leaders in Mu Lambda that can follow the legacy of these great brothers?

th

Ialso had the opportunity to look at the chapters and brothers competing for the Eastern Region Alumni Chapter of the Year and Alumni Brother of the Year, respectively. With the brothers we have in our chapter and the impact that we make on the youth in the Washington DC community, why can’t Mu Lambda compete for such awards?

This summer. Mu Lambda will be planning aretreat to discuss these issues and develop astrategic plan for the future. This retreat will give Mu Lambda the opportunity to determine the goals and objectives for the chapter for the next two to three years. Could it be agoal for Mu Lambda to run for Chapter of the Year in 2006? What should we do between now and 2006 to prepare to accomplish this goal? As Mu Lambda’s great history is interwoven into the fabric of our fraternity’s history, we can celebrate the lOO”’ Anniversary of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. by competing for Alumni Chapter of the Year. Is there abrother in our ranks that could compete for Alumni Brother of the Year in 2006? This retreat and strategic plan can help us shape the future programs of the chapter that will make the greatest impact in the Washington DC community.
