Message From the President

Greetings. Brothersll
We recently witnessed through the media imncessive scenes of thousands of citizens of the country of Chile standing in line at the polls to vote. Interviews of Chilean citizens showed unanimous pride and pleasure in being able to have avoice in the naming of that country sleaders. We Americans should demonstrate no less pride in being able to exercise our constitutional right. As Black Americans, it behooves us to take advantage of the right to exercise the freedom of choice for which our ancestors so valiantly fought in years past. Don treduce the efforts of those brave, sincere people to waste, the lowest of all levels. Don't take for granted that “someone else" will speak for you-and say what
rounders (Omega Chapter)
you want said. Let your voice be heard: VOTE II "A Voteless People is aHopeless People' is as profound atheme now as when we adopted it in 1933-
Also, during the last month, two other events made significant emotional impacts on me. One occurred while attending the Reclamation Smoker of Kappa Epsilon Lambda Chapter (Prince Georges County). KEL Brothers rose at the Smoker to relate how being amember of Alpha Phi Alpha had made apositive impart on their lives and, in many cases, on those around them. They ‘testi fi ed'that pledging Alpha Phi Alpha and participating in its programs were sacrifices worth making. We each then rededicated ourselves to the principles of the founding Jewels.
The other event occurred while visiting my sister's church in Birmingham. During the worship service many of the parishioners rose to ask for the prayers and support of others during their times of personal hardships. Still others stood to “testify" as to the positive effect their faith had on their lives. The sincerity and intimacy of the revelations were impressive to those in attendance. The spirit and emotion at both events were profound.
Brothers of Mu Lambda, we should continue our tradition of rising to the occasion and speaking out for the betterment of man. The vows taken when we entered our great Fraternity need to be
reaJ fi rmed in the relative calm of post-pledging. With aclear understanding of what the principles are about, we must back* up the pledges with action. There is aparticular need in the area of service to all mankind. We all have personal problems, but listening to the members of that Birmingham church relate theirs made mine seem insigni fi cant by comparison. In “the true spirit of Fraternity.“ 1 call upon each of us to “testify.’
We certainly recognize that there are so many in the DC. area that are less fortunate. Therefore. 1ask that you make an individual, concentrated effort toward “Making aDifference.’ Someone once said. “1 used to complain of having no shoes until 1met aman with no feet." By participating in our committees, you can make a positive impact on the lives of our youth, the aged, the in fi rm, and those less fortunate. Sure, we will continue to have our parties and social affairs-man does not live by bread alone-'but we Will also endeavor to keep contributing to improving the lives of those in need. "First of all. servants of all. we shall transcend all!"
Each of you is urged to fi ll in the enclosed membership envelope, submit your dues for 1989. attend the monthly chapter meetings, and join us by serving on acommittee or two. Mu Lambda can and will carry on the legacy of our founders We will continue “Making a Difference.'
