Message from the President

Brother Edwin F. Norwood, III

“Mu Lambda Chapter: From the 10th Annual Beautillion to the 100th Centennial Convention”

As we come to the end of the fraternity year, the brothers of Mu Lambda Chapter can look back on this year with a sense of accomplishment because we have made a difference in the Washington DC community. Our accomplishments include a successful 10th Annual Henry Arthur Callis Beautillion Gala resulting in over $20,000 in scholarships, Black and Gold Ball that honored the 50year brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Voter’s Registration Drive that registered over 50 people to vote, Project Alpha at four middle schools in Washington DC, fundraising effort for the March of Dimes, and Eastern Regional Vice Presidential Candidate’s Debate. We also ran for chapter of the year at the District Convention for the first time in over 7 years.

Although Mu Lambda chapter will continue to implement the fraternity’s national programs and raise scholarship money for deserving high school student through the Black and Gold Ball, Henry Arthur Callis Scholarship Fund, and the Beautillion, next year’s focus will be centered around planning and preparing for the Fraternity’s 100th Centennial Convention in Washington DC during the summer of 2006. It is going to take the efforts of every brother to make the next year more successful than this year. As Mu Lambda’s great history is interwoven into the fabric of our fraternity’s history, we can celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. by competing for Alumni Chapter of the Year.

EXECUTIVE MESSAGE (from Page 1)

We should also consider running for Alumni Brother of the Year and the Charles H. Wesley Award for our work with the Beta Chapter. Mu Lambda brothers already have a prominent role in planning for the upcoming Centennial Convention. Brother Vincent Orange and Brother Michael Rogers are the local chairmen for the convention. Dr. Janet Harris (wife of Brother Rudolph Harris) is the chair of the ladies’ activities. There will be many committees formed in the coming days to support the local committee during the preparation for the convention.

Brother Douglas Sands and Brother Rudolph Harris are leading Mu Lambda’s efforts to prepare for our 100th year. They are looking at ways to focus and energize brothers across Washington DC and beyond regarding the future of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. in the next 100 years As mentioned in the April 2005 Torch, we also need to find a way to utilize the chapter house during the 2006 convention; and we should find a way to ensure our brothers who can not attend chapter meetings because of a disability or health reasons can participate in the chapter and the Centennial celebration.

Although the weather does not suggest it, brothers are beginning to plan for summertime activities. Summertime is the time of the year for weddings, family reunions, and summer vacations. It is the time where many people take a couple of months to “recharge their batteries” after a long winter and eventful spring. It is also time for the upcoming chapter leadership to prepare for the next year. I would like to say “Thank You” to the brothers who are completing their term on the executive board. Your energy and expertise were greatly appreciated and we look forward to working with you in other capacities in the upcoming fraternal year.

On a personal note, I would like to thank the brothers of Mu Lambda chapter for their support this year. It has been an honor to serve you as chapter president this past year and I look forward the challenge next year.

See you at the chapter meeting on June 2nd

May Meeting Highlights

• The graduating Brothers of Beta Chapter received complimentary Alpha Phi Alpha cuff links.

• Officers for the 2005-06 fraternal year were elected.
