An Alpha Phi Alpha man’s attitude should not be “How much can I derive from the Fraternity?” but “How much can I do for the Fraternity?” In proportion to what he does for his Chapter and for Alpha Phi Alpha will a member receive lasting benefit from the Fraternity to himself in the way of self-development by duty well done and by the respect of brothers well served.
A member’s duties should be:
1. Prompt payment of all financial obligations, the prime requisite of successful fraternal life.
2. The doing of good scholastic work in his chosen vocation, thereby accomplishing the real end of a college course.
3. The reasonable endeavor to participate in general college activities and social service and to excel therein.
4. The proper consideration of all things, with appropriate attention to the high moral standard of Alpha Phi Alpha.
CHARLES H. GARVIN
President 1912-1913.
Brothers this is the time for us to reflect back to the time we made the decision to become members of the greatest fraternity in the world. We need to think about why we made this decision, what promises we made to the fraternity and what promises we made to ourselves. Now let us examine where we are today and ask ourselves, “Have we made good on those promises?”
The most remarkable roles of leadership in the AfricanAmerican community today has, without question, come from the ranks of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Since our founding on December 4, 1906, the Fraternity has supplied voice and vision to the struggle of African-Americans and people of color around the country and beyond. Brothers as we go forward this fraternal year, let us find ways in which we can renew that “good ole Alpha spirit”, fraternizing and enriching the bond of brotherhood with the young and the seasoned brothers. We will guard the legacy of our Jewels, be good stewards of the chapters’ traditions and possessions while being servants for all.

Got books around your house? Some for kids? Don't read them? If the answers to these questions are "yes", then you can critically enhance a young boy or girl's educational opportunities in Africa.
Mu Lambda will be collecting old, new, and used books to donate to kids in Africa. Bring books for kids of all ages to each chapter meeting. We will then send the books to a few preselected villages in Ghana that so earnestly desire to read! You can make a difference by simply cleaning out your book shelf.
Goal: 25 books per chapter meeting
Let's be those Alphas that make the world a better place!
The chapter will be hosting Project Alpha on Friday December 4th, 2009 at Noyes Elementary School, 2726 10th Street, NE, Washington, DC 20018. Project Alpha targets middle school males and provides information and resources for making wiser decisions in terms of sex education and pregnancy prevention.
The time for the event is 9 a.m. to 1p.m. Contact Bro. Geoffrey Johnson @ 202-487-0785 or noplga@aol.com
Thanks to those who came out to the homeless walk on November 21st There were thousands of concerned citizens who made it clear that fighting homelessness in DC was a top priority. In 1845, Allen was given an “Impossible” exam designed to guarantee his failure, but he passed and on April 29, 1845, Allen was admitted to the Maine State Bar. With few African Americans in Maine, his potential list of clients was slim, so he moved to Boston, Massachusetts in which he was required to take yet another examination. After passing two bar exams, Allen went on to become the Justice of the Peace for Middlesex County, Massachusetts, in 1854.
In 1868, Allen moved to Charleston, South Carolina, where he became active in politics, running unsuccessfully for Secretary of State of South Carolina. Allen became a partner in the law firm of William J. Whipper and Robert Brown Elliot, the first Black law firm in the United States. Some time after reconstruction, Allen moved to Washington, DC and after fifty years of legal service, Allen died on October 10, 1984
