Message From The President Brother Timothy Fitzgerald
Brothers, April is an exciting month with several events taking place. April is March for Babies Month. President Franklin D. Roosevelt founded the March of Dimes in 1938 to defeat polio. Within 17 years, the Salk vaccine had been developed and polio was on the run. Founded in crisis and validated by this victory, the March of Dimes has continued to serve as a catalyst for action in the face of threats to our nation’s infants and children.
Today, the March of Dimes is one of the most highly respected nonprofits in the nation. Companies or organization that team up with the March of Dimes improve employee health and enhance morale and loyalty, and reduce company health care costs. Organizations that work with March of Dimes align themselves with a winner! Mu Lambda Chapter will be purchasing a mile marker with our name on it which will be seen by thousands of walkers. On Sunday, April 25, 2010 Mu Lambda Chapter will be Marching for Babies! We will walk 4 miles beginning at 9:00am, starting at 15th Street & Madison Ave NW, Washington, DC.
Bro. Mark Ross and the Beautillon Committee have been working tirelessly to ensure that the 15th Annual Mu Lambda Foundation Henry Arthur Callis Beautillion and Scholarship Gala will be a success. I applaud the committee and the members of Mu Lambda for recognizing the importance of scholarships and the difference that they make in the lives of many young people. The Gala will take place Friday, April 16th 2010 at Martins Crosswinds.
There are three months left in the fraternal year and next month the members of Mu Lambda will be electing officers. If you are interested in being a chairman of a committee or an officer please let the members of the nominating committee know. Brothers hold the light of Alpha high!
The next Chapter Meeting will be Thursday, April 1st 2010, 7:06pm

Still Time To Attend the Alpha Wives Scholarship Card Party/ Luncheon on April, 17th
Are you interested in meeting friendly people, having fun playing cards or table games, enjoying a good meal, and supporting scholarships for deserving students? Then you will definitely want to attend the Alpha Wives' major fundraiser, the Annual Scholarship Card Party Luncheon. Proceeds from the event are used to help support two college students- an entering freshman, and a continuing student. This year the event will take place on Saturday, April 17, 2010 at the Washington Navy Yard from noon to four PM. Donation- $35.00. It is well attended by bridge, pinochle and other card players. If you don't play cards - a variety of popular table games are played by many attendees. Even if you don't know how to play, it is easy to learn. Attendees enjoy a delicious meal after which the games begin. It has proved to be a wonderful event. All Alphas, prospective Alpha Wives and guests are invited. Come and join us in the fun. Barbara Ramos, chairperson for the event, can be reached on 202554-4744, and will be happy to provide tickets and any related information

Beautillion Update
By Bro. Arthur King
Preparations for our 2010 Beautillion Scholarship Gala on April 16, 2010 are going full tilt. Brothers Mark Ross, Darrell Chase, Kent Benjamin, Sean Bellamy and the other committee members bring a level of organization and precision to their tasks not matched by any committee I have observed in my eight years of “beautillioning”. Note the “high tech” deployed (pictures below) as brothers work with mothers in assembling ,creating and tracking ads for the souvenir journal, collecting funds and reconciling account balances .
The Scholarship Gala is Mu Lambda Chapter’s marquee annual event: have you made your contribution to this year’s program? If not, there’s still time; April 5th, is the last date ticket orders will be accepted, but contributions and donations towards beaux scholarships maybe submitted until April 9, 2010. Arrangements have been made to accommodate 350 guest, and I am sure you want to be included, so act NOW.

The 2,031 foot mountain near Malibu became Ballard Mountain. The new name comes from John Ballard, a blacksmith and former slave who bought land on the mountain in 1880. The name originally contained a more vulgar racial slur that even appeared on federal maps, but was changed to “Negro” in the 1960”s.
Dozens of Ballard’s descendants attended the renaming ceremony. Born into slavery in Kentucky about 1829, Ballard went to Los Angeles County in the 1850’s when only about 4,000 people lived there, including a few dozen African-Americans. He bought and sold land there, owned a delivery service and worked as a blacksmith.
The arrival of the railroad triggered a land boom in Los Angeles in the 1880’s, boosting property values and bringing the city its first sense of class structure and the beginnings of segregation. Ballard raised livestock and farmed, often collecting firewood in the nearby mountains and selling it in Los Angeles.
John Ballard died in 1905 and was buried in an unmarked grave. Despite owning property in Los Angeles and on the mountain, he died a pauper.
